WSDC 2017 - Bali, Indonesia
It gives me great pleasure to extend to
you all a very warm welcome on behalf of
the Ministry of Education and Culture of
the Republic of Indonesia and to say how
grateful we are to be hosting the World
Schools Debating Championship 2017.
It is gratifying to note that WSDC 2017
brings together 52 nations from around
the world. It is an excellent opportunity to
renew friendships and strengthen networks
between delegates participating this year.

The Indonesian Ministry of Education and
Culture considers debating as a strategic
program to boost the capacities of
students. Personally, I believe that English
debate championships have successfully
attracted enthusiastic participation from
schools everywhere. The WSDC has
encouraged the growth of debate around
the globe, including in Indonesia. Academic
debate in school campuses is vibrant
and students get in line to take part in
debating. Beyond the performances, I see
the WSDC as an embodiment of the ideals
of reasoned argumentation, tolerance for
divergent points of view, and rigorous selfexamination. This is the best way to gear
up students’ critical thinking as well as to
maintain democracy, which the government
cares a great deal about. Therefore, I
strongly believe that competitive debate
needs to take place consistently in the
education system to be the safeguard of the
future generations.
In a more general belief, debating
championships promote the concept
of testing ideas and criticisms; a very
positive approach to democracy and good
governance. It channels the capability to
decide what matters and which arguments
count. Moreover, it trains students to
express their views in a mode of language
that they design to win their case and
impress those who adjudicate them. This is
the best way to bring students into contact
with a culture they might not otherwise
encounter.
In the education system, the task before
us today is to chart a promising future for
our students. This is not an easy task, but
I feel so fortunate. The WSDC makes this
particular task easier. The competition and
debating culture are harmonious here and I
believe that this is the best way to give our
students a huge advantage; opening doors
into a new, often unfamiliar mode of selfexpression. This is my hope and fascination
with competitive debating.
Finally, I wish you all a pleasant time during
your stay in Bali. Cherish the opportunity
and have a wonderful championship. Not
every year you get to experience Bali’s
marvelous culture on top of Indonesia’s
famous hospitality.

Nothing is more rewarding than to see a
civilized exchange of ideas among students.
When young students master the arts of
persuasion and argumentation, our future
is in good hands. In conjunction with the
mission to improve the quality of education
throughout the nation, competitive debate
has therefore become a very signiicant part
of the grand scheme. Not only that it pushes
students to open their minds to multiple
diferent ideas while remaining critical,
debate has also provided an avenue for
Indonesian students to make sure that their
voice are also heard by the world.
Every year, we at the Directorate of High
Schools Development continue to develop
the national debate circuit by organizing the
National Schools Debating Championship
which contests only the best team of
debaters representing the 34 provinces that
constitute Indonesia. The best speakers
from this national championship are
then trained in extensive boot camp to
discover the best individuals who will get to
compete at the highest level at the WSDC
subsequently.
Through our debate programs, we aim to
strengthen not only students’ intelligence,
but also their character, communication
skills, critical thinking ability, and conidence.
At heart, this commitment is in line
with the global mission of advocating
sustainable development as this sort of even
encompasses the principles of learning to
know, learning to do, learning to be, and
learning to live together—a commitment to
transform and change lives.
I believe that this prestigious tournament
provides knowledge and understanding
of the diferent cultures of the world,
languages, and deeper global perspectives.
Indonesia is proud to dedicate its resources
to the development of young debaters
and students as leaders in their respective
communities and hopeful that it lays a
strong foundation for today’s young learners
to become tomorrow’s leaders.

and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia

Schools Debating Championship 2017 in
Bali, Indonesia. Debate has been a very
important part of our works at the Ministry
every year; trying to discover Indonesia’s
best speakers to represent us in the World
Schools Debating Championships. We are
extremely joyful that this year we are blessed
with the opportunity of welcoming nations
from around the world for the irst time in the
WSDC history.

It is with great pleasure that Indonesia
welcomes you to the World Schools
Debating Championship 2017. I am illed
with joy and pride over the fact that we
have been able to overcome the challenges
that have come before us over the past
two years in preparing for this great
championship. I believe that through this
championship, students from around the
world will be able to experience tremendous
satisfaction in being able to promote civilized
debate and bring forth the motions of
tolerance and peace.

This year, we are proposing the theme
of Diversity and Harmony. Comprising
34 diferent provinces spread across the
world’s largest archipelago, Indonesia has
thousands of islands, ethnic groups, ethnic
languages and dialects, traditions, customs,
and many others. Even in extreme condition
of diferences, Indonesia is able to overcome
the overwhelming challenges and live in
harmony. We hope that every participant
coming to Indonesia for the WSDC will see
with their own eyes not only the beauty
of our nature, but also the beauty of our
people. I am also conident that hosting this
tournament will allow us to learn a lot from
the international debating community of how
to disagree during debates while remaining
friendly and supportive of each other after
the debate wraps up.

The World Schools Debating Championship
is perfect for our students to unlock and
achieve their maximum potentials. It
persistently trains students to exercise
their rights to free speech without being
disrespectful of their opponents and also
remaining responsible of what they argue.
In this time and age, sharing is a constant
part of our lives and everyone is entitled to
their opinions. Eforts in generating efective
critical thinking are essential for education
as well on top excellent communication
skills. Competition is getting tougher, so
students are also encouraged to continually
improve their qualities and skills. Therefore, I
believe that debate is a powerful tool to use
in furthering the agenda of enabling access
to quality education for all. Debates change
people through experience and I believe that
this experience will change the lives of many
of you as well.
I look forward to witnessing the birth of the
next World Champion!

the World
Schools Debating
Championships
I am delighted to welcome participants from
across the globe to the 2017 World Schools
Debating Championships in Bali, Indonesia.
The World Schools Debating
Championships started out as a small
international tournament in 1988 involving
teams from 6 nations. Over the past
3 decades, it has grown into a wellestablished annual event, regularly involving
over 50 teams from every corner of the
world.
Indonesia began sending its team to the
championships in 2001 and has been
involved in WSDC every year since then.
I’m delighted that Indonesia has now taken
up the mantle of hosts, and I am certain
that the event in Bali this year will not only
be a fantastic debating tournament but
also a rich cultural experience for everyone
involved. I would like to express my very
sincere thanks to the Indonesian Ministry
of Education and Culture, The Jakarta Post
Foundation, all the host schools in Bali at
which the debate rounds will be taking
place, and all the other organizations whose
support has made WSDC 2017 possible.
Running an international event of this scale
is a mammoth task, and huge thanks must
also go to all the members organizing
committee and all the other individuals
who have contributed to putting this year’s
competition together.
Over 500 debating enthusiasts from around
the world are converging in Bali for this
year’s championship. Every participant
becomes a member of the WSDC
community, and I encourage you to get
to know as many other members of the
community as you can during your time in
Bali and discover the unique perspectives
which each and every one of them brings. I
hope that every participant at WSDC 2017
enjoys the experience of being in Bali, of
engaging in thought-provoking debates on a
variety of issues, and of interacting with the
other participants who have come together
from across the globe for this event.

Debates have been a feature of human
history for over 4,000 years. Egyptian
princes, for example, are known to have
debated agricultural policy at the Pharaoh’s
court as early as 2080 BC, while Chinese
scholars conducted important philosophical
debates during the reign of the Chou
Dynasty from 1122 – 255 BC. Protagoras
of Abdera is believed to have organized the
irst formal debating competitions when he
held debate contests between his students
in Athens 2,400 years ago.

Intelligence and
Compassion
WSDC 2017 - Bali, Indonesia
Hosting the championship in Bali is a
two-year work in the making. It has been a
long, rigorous process that has become a
constant part of my routines for the past two
years. I will be sad when it all concludes on
August 11th, but for now I am all drowned
in excitement to be welcoming the 52
delegations that are going to compete for
the coveted title of World Champion. Of
these 52 teams, we have 3 nations who are
making their irst appearance and also some
other nations who are not represented by
their debaters but are still contributing with
their judges and observers present in Bali.
I am therefore conident and hopeful that
more and more nations will join the global
WSDC community in future years.

The freedom to express manifests
in diferent forms in diferent places.
Sometimes we take that freedom for
granted. We forget that in many places, it
is a matter of life and death just to have an
opinion; that for some people, being able
to simply speak their mind is a luxury they
can’t aford. For those reasons, I treasure
debating; because as soon as you step into
the debate room, every opinion matters as
long as they are accompanied by sound
reason and healthy argumentation. You
also learn to see both sides of the coin as
you are expected to be able to argue for
either side of the house. That is what makes
debating more than just a sport for me: it
helps you see the merits in understanding
why someone is for or against something
without being so quick to judge. To be
able to engage in a conversation not
having already decided that anybody who
disagrees with you is wrong requires not just
intelligence, but also compassion.
To all members of the organizing committee,
volunteers, supporters, and friends, I am
eternally grateful for all the eforts that
you have put into every aspect of the
preparation to make sure that this year’s
championship will be the best one yet.
Having the government support has made
things somewhat easier for us as well, so I
want to thank the Ministry of Education and
Culture of the Republic of Indonesia for all
their support and trust in making WSDC
2017 what it is.
It is therefore with tremendous joy that I wish
the best of luck to all of you. I want you to
always remember that many out there can
only dream to compete at the level that you
are now, so make sure that you give it your
all. Make the most out of this experience
and please don’t forget to treat yourself
to the magniicent beauty of Bali and its
people.

Hard Work, Sweat,
and Commitment
I can still recall the moment crystal clear
when I decided to challenge myself taking
on the role of being one of the Convenors
for WSDC 2017. I was only in my
sophomore year and probably rather naïve.
I was completely unaware of the
tremendous responsibility embedded with
the role. It was all pure excitement at irst
because I have always had the passion for
debating and managing competitions.
As Co-Convenor, I’m so honored to be part
of such a big committee that brought the
WSDC to Indonesia for the very irst time
in history. In this special occasion, I would
like to thank several institutions and people
who made WSDC Bali possible. First of all,
the Ministry of Education who constantly
put trust in us, the debating community, to
host WSDC Bali and has been extremely
supportive.
I would also like to show my gratitude to
Subarkah Syafruddin, the person who
helped plant the seeds that have now grown
into WSDC Bali. Thank you for the trust that
you put in me since day one. I know it was
one of your wild dreams to see Indonesia
hosting WSDC and—hey, it’s come true!
Thank you also to The Jakarta Post who
initiated Indonesia’s attempt to bring the
WSDC to Indonesia and brought the team
together. Also, to all my family members and
friends who were always there throughout
all my highs and lows, thank you is such an
understatement. Last but not least, thank
you to Ravio Patra, my Co-Convenor—
thank you for always giving your best and
for all the work. I would have never made
this without you.
I hope all the hard work, sweat, and
commitment that each one of WSDC Bali
organizing committee member has put

When I look back, I realized that the road
in the past two years has never been a
tranquil one. It has been illed with pebbles
and rocks here and there. Co-convening the
largest international high school debating
championship turned out to be way harder
than I irst thought it would be. But there’s
no single regret I have. Fast forward two
years, it all went by so fast and now here we
are—WSDC 2017 Bali is happening and I’m
extremely delighted to welcome each one of
you to the championships.

Cara debated for Team Indonesia and won Best EFL
Speaker in Bangkok 2014. She is excited to return
to this year’s WSDC as Tournament Director. She is
still faithfully waiting for her Hogwarts letter, but in the
meantime, she settles for Economics at Universitas
Indonesia with a passion for poverty alleviation. Expect
a warm and bubbly (but viciously snappy, if you come
late or don’t follow tournament regulations) girl who
is poised to help do everything she can to make your
Bali experience a memorable one.

Rachmat is a keen supporter of debating in Indonesia.
He has lead Indonesian delegations to both the
WSDC and WUDC. A lecturer at Universitas Negeri
Yogyakarta, Rachmat helps organize the National
Schools Debating Championship (NSDC) and Lomba
Debat Bahasa Indonesia (LDBI), a counterpart of
NSDC where the debates are conducted in similar
style with speeches in the Indonesian language.

Fonda has been with the Ministry of Education and
Culture for 15 years and a good part of those 15
years have been spent working to develop debating
across Indonesia. She has had an active role furthering
high school debating through the annual national
championship, from which Indonesia selects its
representatives for the WSDC. She has been to WSDC
twice in Singapore 2015 and Stuttgart 2016.
Sidik takes care of the little details that are always
there but nobody seems to notice how they were done
in the irst place as if they were just there to begin with.
It’s a magic trick—or so he claimed. If aliens abducted
him, you won’t like it because he prepares your kits
and certiicates. After all, you can’t go home without
a certiicate to prove you really were in Bali for WSDC;
not just some wanderlust trip.

The only person in the organizing committee who
actually resides in the island of Bali, Nyoman is our
reliable go-to local man. A lecturer at Politeknik Negeri
Bali, Nyoman doesn’t ind ‘traveling’ to Bali as exciting
as the rest of us do because he doesn’t get to really
travel anywhere—the venues are all an hour’s car ride
away from his home.
Hari works at the Ministry of Education and Culture
and has been involved with national championship
since 2002. Having been to WSDC 2014 in Bangkok
as an observer, Hari is no stranger to competitive
debating even though he’s never tried the sport
himself—more of an observer from the bureaucracy.
Hari hopes that everyone has a good time in Bali.

Jeanne falls hard for cute mundane stuf. Give her
anything purple, squishy, or lufy—and she’ll beam.
Her friends stamp her as workaholic, impulsive, and
disciplined. She allegedly causes hearing impairment
when in distress or excitement. Jeanne has attended
numerous debating tournaments as debater,
adjudicator, and organizer—she’s spent one-third of
her life in competitive debating. Jeanne is always ready
to help you whenever she can.
Jessica is one of the registration angels (as we prefer
to call ourselves) whose names you may recognize
from the relentless emails they keep pestering you
with on a regular basis. She’s spent 7 years of her life
in debating and the rest of it being a devoted couch
potato. You can always ind her by the stationary
section in bookstores and cute dessert cafés. Jessica
wishes you the best for WSDC and don’t forget to
have fun while at it!

Pelangi is no Wonder Woman but she is a stubborn
idealist who would jump of a clif in a heartbeat if
she knew there was a 5.5-percent chance of light.
A big fan of sustainable energy and design, she’s
big on people who love what they do and have the
courage to do what’s right no matter what. She works
in Bangkok for an architecture irm but nothing was
stopping her from coming to Bali for the WSDC.
Previously Associate Director of Debate at
Northwestern University and Director of Debate at the
University of Kentucky, Andrea is an Intercollegiate
Debate Coach at Harvard University. She has
extensive experience using the tabroom.com across a
variety of debate events and has hosted and tabulated
for more than 30 forensics tournaments. She was also
a member of the World Schools tabulation room at the
NSDA National Championship.

camera trying to get your picture, don’t be afraid!
That may be Etha or someone from her team trying to
document the WSDC moments in pictures. They work
like lies on the walls. When the championship ends,
everyone will have pictures and videos to remember
their Bali moments by. So worry not—they’ve got your
back!
The only reason you’re reading this book now is
because Rizki managed to put everything together in
time for printing. Ravio might have edited the book,
but Rizki has all the magic tricks. Without him, you’d
still have the yearbook but on plain white papers.
Some of you submitted a very long text for the team
proile, so they had to be edited to make sure that
everything its in one page. Sorry about that.

SMA NEGERI 1 DENPASAR
The oldest high school in Denpasar, SMAN 1 Denpasar is widely considered
as one of the most reputable educational institutions in Bali. Well-known for
its academic and extracurricular accomplishments especially in sports and art
programs, the school ground is decorated with natural green trees—giving of
a very fresh atmosphere which is perfect for students to perform their activities.
SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar hosts Preliminary Rounds 1, 2, 3, and 4.
SMA NEGERI 4 DENPASAR
Widely considered to be one of the nation’s best schools, SMAN 4 Denpasar
boasts a formidable reputation as the training ground of reputable Indonesian
debaters—some of whom have gone on to win national titles for Bali and
represent Team Indonesia in the WSDC. Established in 1982, the school
is located in the Western part of Denpasar. SMA Negeri 4 Denpasar hosts
Preliminary Rounds 5, 6, 7, and 8.
SMA NEGERI 7 DENPASAR
Referred to as the ‘green school’ thanks to its eco-friendly policies, SMA Negeri
7 Denpasar was established in 1989 and has been awarded for its environmental
awareness programs, expansive school gardens, and tree-planting initiative.
Located in the Central part of Denpasar, the school is also known for its football,
basketball, and art programs. SMA Negeri 7 Denpasar hosts Preliminary Rounds
1, 2, 3, and 4.
SMK PARIWISATA HARAPAN DENPASAR
SMK Pariwisata Harapan Denpasar deies the stereotypes set against Vocational
High Schools in Indonesia—often portrayed as institutions reserved for
underachieving students. A private school for students to master the A to Z of
Tourism industry in addition to regular secondary education competencies, the
school is best known for its excellent foreign language programs, particularly
English, Japanese, and Mandarin. SMK Pariwisata Harapan Denpasar hosts
Preliminary Rounds 7 and 8.

POLITEKNIK NEGERI BALI
A state polytechnic ofering 3-and-4-year Diploma degrees for students hoping
to be professionals in Accounting, Business Administration, Tourism, as well as
Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering, Politeknik Negeri Bali is located
in Jimbaran—where all the good seafood and luxurious resorts are. Politeknik
Negeri Bali hosts Preliminary Rounds 5 and 6.

SEKOLAH TINGGI ILMU KESEHATAN BALI
A private college where students aspire to be professional nurses and midwives,
Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan (Stikes) Bali is located in the Eastern part of
Denpasar. Ofering both Diploma and Bachelor’s degrees, Stikes Bali has trained
many competent Health professionals. Stikes Bali hosts the Partial Double
Octoinals and Octoinals.
UNIVERSITAS UDAYANA
Considered to be Bali’s premier and largest university ofering undergraduate,
graduate, and post-graduate programs in a variety of ields, Universitas Udayana
is a state university named after the Great Emperor who ruled Bali many
centuries ago. Situated in downtown Denpasar, Universitas Udayana is among
the nation’s top-tier universities with internationally esteemed faculty members.
Universitas Udayana hosts the Quarterinals and Semiinals.
I GUSTI NGURAH RAI AIRPORT
The international gate to Bali, I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) is connected
to many major global cities. The airport serves hundreds of domestic and
international lights daily and will be the irst gate for most of you when arriving
in and departing from Bali. Worry not—the airport is swarmed by local cabs and
car rent services. And since it’s 2017, services from Uber, Grab, or the popular
local brand GoJek are widely available. For those of you who arrive in Bali starting
1 August and departing no later than 11 August, rest assured we’ve got you
covered with our exclusive airport transfer services.
SANUR PARADISE PLAZA HOTEL
In Sanur, one of Bali’s more sophisticated tourist spots, many accommodations
will dazzle you but Sanur Paradise Plaza Hotel is a special one. A 4-star
establishment with beaches, shops, and eateries nearby, every participant of
WSDC 2017 will be entitled to a 10-night full board accommodation at the hotel.
For some of you who are lucky enough, you will ind yourselves in rooms with
private balconies and direct access to their 110-meter free-form pool shaded
by tropical palm trees. In addition to being your temporary home, the hotel also
hosts the tournament committee meetings, regular meals, and closing ceremony.
GRAND INNA BALI BEACH HOTEL, RESORT & SPA
An extremely popular 5-star resort, Grand Inna Bali Beach ofers direct access to
their private sunrise beach, where we will release baby turtles into the seas in the
morning before Grand Final round scheduled to take place in their Rama Shinta
Ballroom later in the afternoon. Grand Inna also hosts some teams arriving early
in Bali as well as the Cultural Night.
CITTA KELANGEN AUDITORIUM
Citta Kelangen, whose name means ‘inspired by beauty’, is located within
the compound of the art school that is Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Denpasar.
Equipped with a luxurious lounge, the auditorium can host up to 1,500 people
at once—more than what we need to host all participants for the marvelous
opening ceremony.

CANANGSARI RESTAURANT
Popular for hosting parties and ceremonies with a healthy mix of Western and
local cuisine, Canangsari hosts host the Break Night Party of WSDC 2017.
Consistent with its Balinese architecture, Canangsari ofers Balinese cultural
performances to its guests—perfect for relaxing before the break announcement
is made.

WSDC 2017 - Bali, Indonesia
It gives me great pleasure to extend to
you all a very warm welcome on behalf of
the Ministry of Education and Culture of
the Republic of Indonesia and to say how
grateful we are to be hosting the World
Schools Debating Championship 2017.
It is gratifying to note that WSDC 2017
brings together 52 nations from around
the world. It is an excellent opportunity to
renew friendships and strengthen networks
between delegates participating this year.

The Indonesian Ministry of Education and
Culture considers debating as a strategic
program to boost the capacities of
students. Personally, I believe that English
debate championships have successfully
attracted enthusiastic participation from
schools everywhere. The WSDC has
encouraged the growth of debate around
the globe, including in Indonesia. Academic
debate in school campuses is vibrant
and students get in line to take part in
debating. Beyond the performances, I see
the WSDC as an embodiment of the ideals
of reasoned argumentation, tolerance for
divergent points of view, and rigorous selfexamination. This is the best way to gear
up students’ critical thinking as well as to
maintain democracy, which the government
cares a great deal about. Therefore, I
strongly believe that competitive debate
needs to take place consistently in the
education system to be the safeguard of the
future generations.
In a more general belief, debating
championships promote the concept
of testing ideas and criticisms; a very
positive approach to democracy and good
governance. It channels the capability to
decide what matters and which arguments
count. Moreover, it trains students to
express their views in a mode of language
that they design to win their case and
impress those who adjudicate them. This is
the best way to bring students into contact
with a culture they might not otherwise
encounter.
In the education system, the task before
us today is to chart a promising future for
our students. This is not an easy task, but
I feel so fortunate. The WSDC makes this
particular task easier. The competition and
debating culture are harmonious here and I
believe that this is the best way to give our
students a huge advantage; opening doors
into a new, often unfamiliar mode of selfexpression. This is my hope and fascination
with competitive debating.
Finally, I wish you all a pleasant time during
your stay in Bali. Cherish the opportunity
and have a wonderful championship. Not
every year you get to experience Bali’s
marvelous culture on top of Indonesia’s
famous hospitality.

Nothing is more rewarding than to see a
civilized exchange of ideas among students.
When young students master the arts of
persuasion and argumentation, our future
is in good hands. In conjunction with the
mission to improve the quality of education
throughout the nation, competitive debate
has therefore become a very signiicant part
of the grand scheme. Not only that it pushes
students to open their minds to multiple
diferent ideas while remaining critical,
debate has also provided an avenue for
Indonesian students to make sure that their
voice are also heard by the world.
Every year, we at the Directorate of High
Schools Development continue to develop
the national debate circuit by organizing the
National Schools Debating Championship
which contests only the best team of
debaters representing the 34 provinces that
constitute Indonesia. The best speakers
from this national championship are
then trained in extensive boot camp to
discover the best individuals who will get to
compete at the highest level at the WSDC
subsequently.
Through our debate programs, we aim to
strengthen not only students’ intelligence,
but also their character, communication
skills, critical thinking ability, and conidence.
At heart, this commitment is in line
with the global mission of advocating
sustainable development as this sort of even
encompasses the principles of learning to
know, learning to do, learning to be, and
learning to live together—a commitment to
transform and change lives.
I believe that this prestigious tournament
provides knowledge and understanding
of the diferent cultures of the world,
languages, and deeper global perspectives.
Indonesia is proud to dedicate its resources
to the development of young debaters
and students as leaders in their respective
communities and hopeful that it lays a
strong foundation for today’s young learners
to become tomorrow’s leaders.

with joy and pride over the fact that we
have been able to overcome the challenges
that have come before us over the past
two years in preparing for this great
championship. I believe that through this
championship, students from around the
world will be able to experience tremendous
satisfaction in being able to promote civilized
debate and bring forth the motions of
tolerance and peace.

This year, we are proposing the theme
of Diversity and Harmony. Comprising
34 diferent provinces spread across the
world’s largest archipelago, Indonesia has
thousands of islands, ethnic groups, ethnic
languages and dialects, traditions, customs,
and many others. Even in extreme condition
of diferences, Indonesia is able to overcome
the overwhelming challenges and live in
harmony. We hope that every participant
coming to Indonesia for the WSDC will see
with their own eyes not only the beauty
of our nature, but also the beauty of our
people. I am also conident that hosting this
tournament will allow us to learn a lot from
the international debating community of how
to disagree during debates while remaining
friendly and supportive of each other after
the debate wraps up.

The World Schools Debating Championship
is perfect for our students to unlock and
achieve their maximum potentials. It
persistently trains students to exercise
their rights to free speech without being
disrespectful of their opponents and also
remaining responsible of what they argue.
In this time and age, sharing is a constant
part of our lives and everyone is entitled to
their opinions. Eforts in generating efective
critical thinking are essential for education
as well on top excellent communication
skills. Competition is getting tougher, so
students are also encouraged to continually
improve their qualities and skills. Therefore, I
believe that debate is a powerful tool to use
in furthering the agenda of enabling access
to quality education for all. Debates change
people through experience and I believe that
this experience will change the lives of many
of you as well.

the World
Schools Debating
Championships
I am delighted to welcome participants from
across the globe to the 2017 World Schools
Debating Championships in Bali, Indonesia.
The World Schools Debating
Championships started out as a small
international tournament in 1988 involving
teams from 6 nations. Over the past
3 decades, it has grown into a wellestablished annual event, regularly involving
over 50 teams from every corner of the
world.
Indonesia began sending its team to the
championships in 2001 and has been
involved in WSDC every year since then.
I’m delighted that Indonesia has now taken
up the mantle of hosts, and I am certain
that the event in Bali this year will not only
be a fantastic debating tournament but
also a rich cultural experience for everyone
involved. I would like to express my very
sincere thanks to the Indonesian Ministry
of Education and Culture, The Jakarta Post
Foundation, all the host schools in Bali at
which the debate rounds will be taking
place, and all the other organizations whose
support has made WSDC 2017 possible.
Running an international event of this scale
is a mammoth task, and huge thanks must
also go to all the members organizing
committee and all the other individuals
who have contributed to putting this year’s
competition together.
Over 500 debating enthusiasts from around
the world are converging in Bali for this
year’s championship. Every participant
becomes a member of the WSDC
community, and I encourage you to get
to know as many other members of the
community as you can during your time in
Bali and discover the unique perspectives
which each and every one of them brings. I
hope that every participant at WSDC 2017
enjoys the experience of being in Bali, of
engaging in thought-provoking debates on a
variety of issues, and of interacting with the
other participants who have come together
from across the globe for this event.

Debates have been a feature of human
history for over 4,000 years. Egyptian
princes, for example, are known to have
debated agricultural policy at the Pharaoh’s
court as early as 2080 BC, while Chinese
scholars conducted important philosophical
debates during the reign of the Chou
Dynasty from 1122 – 255 BC. Protagoras
of Abdera is believed to have organized the
irst formal debating competitions when he
held debate contests between his students
in Athens 2,400 years ago.

Intelligence and
Compassion
WSDC 2017 - Bali, Indonesia
Hosting the championship in Bali is a
two-year work in the making. It has been a
long, rigorous process that has become a
constant part of my routines for the past two
years. I will be sad when it all concludes on
August 11th, but for now I am all drowned
in excitement to be welcoming the 52
delegations that are going to compete for
the coveted title of World Champion. Of
these 52 teams, we have 3 nations who are
making their irst appearance and also some
other nations who are not represented by
their debaters but are still contributing with
their judges and observers present in Bali.
I am therefore conident and hopeful that
more and more nations will join the global
WSDC community in future years.

The freedom to express manifests
in diferent forms in diferent places.
Sometimes we take that freedom for
granted. We forget that in many places, it
is a matter of life and death just to have an
opinion; that for some people, being able
to simply speak their mind is a luxury they
can’t aford. For those reasons, I treasure
debating; because as soon as you step into
the debate room, every opinion matters as
long as they are accompanied by sound
reason and healthy argumentation. You
also learn to see both sides of the coin as
you are expected to be able to argue for
either side of the house. That is what makes
debating more than just a sport for me: it
helps you see the merits in understanding
why someone is for or against something
without being so quick to judge. To be
able to engage in a conversation not
having already decided that anybody who
disagrees with you is wrong requires not just
intelligence, but also compassion.
To all members of the organizing committee,
volunteers, supporters, and friends, I am

and Commitment
I can still recall the moment crystal clear
when I decided to challenge myself taking
on the role of being one of the Convenors
for WSDC 2017. I was only in my
sophomore year and probably rather naïve.
I was completely unaware of the
tremendous responsibility embedded with
the role. It was all pure excitement at irst
because I have always had the passion for
debating and managing competitions.
As Co-Convenor, I’m so honored to be part
of such a big committee that brought the
WSDC to Indonesia for the very irst time
in history. In this special occasion, I would
like to thank several institutions and people
who made WSDC Bali possible. First of all,
the Ministry of Education who constantly
put trust in us, the debating community, to
host WSDC Bali and has been extremely
supportive.
I would also like to show my gratitude to
Subarkah Syafruddin, the person who
helped plant the seeds that have now grown
into WSDC Bali. Thank you for the trust that
you put in me since day one. I know it was
one of your wild dreams to see Indonesia
hosting WSDC and—hey, it’s come true!
Thank you also to The Jakarta Post who
initiated Indonesia’s attempt to bring the
WSDC to Indonesia and brought the team

When I look back, I realized that the road
in the past two years has never been a
tranquil one. It has been illed with pebbles
and rocks here and there. Co-convening the
largest international high school debating
championship turned out to be way harder
than I irst thought it would be. But there’s
no single regret I have. Fast forward two
years, it all went by so fast and now here we
are—WSDC 2017 Bali is happening and I’m
extremely delighted to welcome each one of
you to the championships.

Cara debated for Team Indonesia and won Best EFL
Speaker in Bangkok 2014. She is excited to return
to this year’s WSDC as Tournament Director. She is
still faithfully waiting for her Hogwarts letter, but in the
meantime, she settles for Economics at Universitas
Indonesia with a passion for poverty alleviation. Expect
a warm and bubbly (but viciously snappy, if you come
late or don’t follow tournament regulations) girl who
is poised to help do everything she can to make your
Bali experience a memorable one.

Rachmat is a keen supporter of debating in Indonesia.
He has lead Indonesian delegations to both the
WSDC and WUDC. A lecturer at Universitas Negeri
Yogyakarta, Rachmat helps organize the National
Schools Debating Championship (NSDC) and Lomba
Debat Bahasa Indonesia (LDBI), a counterpart of
NSDC where the debates are conducted in similar
style with speeches in the Indonesian language.

Fonda has been with the Ministry of Education and
Culture for 15 years and a good part of those 15
years have been spent working to develop debating
across Indonesia. She has had an active role furthering
high school debating through the annual national
championship, from which Indonesia selects its
representatives for the WSDC. She has been to WSDC
twice in Singapore 2015 and Stuttgart 2016.
Sidik takes care of the little details that are always
there but nobody seems to notice how they were done
in the irst place as if they were just there to begin with.
It’s a magic trick—or so he claimed. If aliens abducted
him, you won’t like it because he prepares your kits
and certiicates. After all, you can’t go home without
a certiicate to prove you really were in Bali for WSDC;
not just some wanderlust trip.

The only person in the organizing committee who
actually resides in the island of Bali, Nyoman is our
reliable go-to local man. A lecturer at Politeknik Negeri
Bali, Nyoman doesn’t ind ‘traveling’ to Bali as exciting
as the rest of us do because he doesn’t get to really
travel anywhere—the venues are all an hour’s car ride
away from his home.
Hari works at the Ministry of Education and Culture
and has been involved with national championship
since 2002. Having been to WSDC 2014 in Bangkok
as an observer, Hari is no stranger to competitive
debating even though he’s never tried the sport
himself—more of an observer from the bureaucracy.

Jeanne falls hard for cute mundane stuf. Give her
anything purple, squishy, or lufy—and she’ll beam.
Her friends stamp her as workaholic, impulsive, and
disciplined. She allegedly causes hearing impairment
when in distress or excitement. Jeanne has attended
numerous debating tournaments as debater,
adjudicator, and organizer—she’s spent one-third of
her life in competitive debating. Jeanne is always ready
to help you whenever she can.
Jessica is one of the registration angels (as we prefer
to call ourselves) whose names you may recognize
from the relentless emails they keep pestering you
with on a regular basis. She’s spent 7 years of her life
in debating and the rest of it being a devoted couch
potato. You can always ind her by the stationary
section in bookstores and cute dessert cafés. Jessica
wishes you the best for WSDC and don’t forget to
have fun while at it!

Pelangi is no Wonder Woman but she is a stubborn
idealist who would jump of a clif in a heartbeat if
she knew there was a 5.5-percent chance of light.
A big fan of sustainable energy and design, she’s
big on people who love what they do and have the
courage to do what’s right no matter what. She works
in Bangkok for an architecture irm but nothing was
stopping her from coming to Bali for the WSDC.
Previously Associate Director of Debate at
Northwestern University and Director of Debate at the
University of Kentucky, Andrea is an Intercollegiate
Debate Coach at Harvard University. She has
extensive experience using the tabroom.com across a
variety of debate events and has hosted and tabulated
for more than 30 forensics tournaments. She was also
a member of the World Schools tabulation room at the
NSDA National Championship.

like lies on the walls. When the championship ends,

The only reason you’re reading this book now is
because Rizki managed to put everything together in
time for printing. Ravio might have edited the book,
but Rizki has all the magic tricks. Without him, you’d
still have the yearbook but on plain white papers.

SMA NEGERI 1 DENPASAR
The oldest high school in Denpasar, SMAN 1 Denpasar is widely considered
as one of the most reputable educational institutions in Bali. Well-known for
its academic and extracurricular accomplishments especially in sports and art
programs, the school ground is decorated with natural green trees—giving of
a very fresh atmosphere which is perfect for students to perform their activities.
SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar hosts Preliminary Rounds 1, 2, 3, and 4.
SMA NEGERI 4 DENPASAR
Widely considered to be one of the nation’s best schools, SMAN 4 Denpasar
boasts a formidable reputation as the training ground of reputable Indonesian
debaters—some of whom have gone on to win national titles for Bali and
represent Team Indonesia in the WSDC. Established in 1982, the school
is located in the Western part of Denpasar. SMA Negeri 4 Denpasar hosts
Preliminary Rounds 5, 6, 7, and 8.
SMA NEGERI 7 DENPASAR
Referred to as the ‘green school’ thanks to its eco-friendly policies, SMA Negeri
7 Denpasar was established in 1989 and has been awarded for its environmental
awareness programs, expansive school gardens, and tree-planting initiative.
Located in the Central part of Denpasar, the school is also known for its football,
basketball, and art programs. SMA Negeri 7 Denpasar hosts Preliminary Rounds
1, 2, 3, and 4.
SMK PARIWISATA HARAPAN DENPASAR
SMK Pariwisata Harapan Denpasar deies the stereotypes set against Vocational
High Schools in Indonesia—often portrayed as institutions reserved for
underachieving students. A private school for students to master the A to Z of
Tourism industry in addition to regular secondary education competencies, the
school is best known for its excellent foreign language programs, particularly
English, Japanese, and Mandarin. SMK Pariwisata Harapan Denpasar hosts
Preliminary Rounds 7 and 8.

POLITEKNIK NEGERI BALI
A state polytechnic ofering 3-and-4-year Diploma degrees for students hoping
to be professionals in Accounting, Business Administration, Tourism, as well as
Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering, Politeknik Negeri Bali is located
in Jimbaran—where all the good seafood and luxurious resorts are. Politeknik
Negeri Bali hosts Preliminary Rounds 5 and 6.

SEKOLAH TINGGI ILMU KESEHATAN BALI
A private college where students aspire to be professional nurses and midwives,
Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan (Stikes) Bali is located in the Eastern part of
Denpasar. Ofering both Diploma and Bachelor’s degrees, Stikes Bali has trained
many competent Health professionals. Stikes Bali hosts the Partial Double
Octoinals and Octoinals.
UNIVERSITAS UDAYANA
Considered to be Bali’s premier and largest university ofering undergraduate,
graduate, and post-graduate programs in a variety of ields, Universitas Udayana
is a state university named after the Great Emperor who ruled Bali many
centuries ago. Situated in downtown Denpasar, Universitas Udayana is among
the nation’s top-tier universities with internationally esteemed faculty members.
Universitas Udayana hosts the Quarterinals and Semiinals.

The international gate to Bali, I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) is connected
to many major global cities. The airport serves hundreds of domestic and

It’s surprising how many parallels you can draw between Satria ‘Rahde’ Aryawangsa and
Regina George; their unmatched sass and queen (or king—we don’t discriminate) status, for
example. This bio won’t be too informative because obviously, the vibrancy and presence that
Rahde brings when he steps into a room will immediately make your head turn. But be careful;

girls. She can’t understand how she’s able to tolerate everyone in the team considering how
rational of a person she is. Nonetheless, she’ll unexpectedly throw around shades in a debate
