Vocabulary Profile of IC (Integrated Course) Books Used in English
Teacher Education Program of Satya Wacana Christian University
Abstract
This study was conducted to identify the vocabulary profile of IC (Integrated
Course) books used in English Teacher Education Program of Satya Wacana
Christian University. The sample was taken from IC (Integrated Course) book 1
and 2 as much as 25% by choosing the pages systematically for each book. The
analysis was done by using an electronic tool: Vocabulary Profiler. Vocabulary
profile consists of four types: high – frequency word, low – frequency word,
academic word, and technical word. In this study, the vocabulary profiler only
focused on the three types: K1 (1000 word list) as the high – frequency word,
K2 (1001 – 2000 word list), and AWL (academic word list). Based on the result,
the vocabulary in IC book 1 comprised 81.46% of K1 word, 7.54% of K2 word,
and 2.1% of AWL word. The vocabulary in IC book 2 comprised 83.93% of K1
word, 7.12% of K2 word, and 1.72% of AWL word.

Introduction
This paper was made to show the analysis of the vocabulary profile of IC
(Integrated Course) books used by students of English Teacher Education Program of
Satya Wacana Christian University. Word is the most important aspect that students
should learn. All languages have words because words are language‟s building block
since they label action, object, and ideas without which people can‟t convey the
intended meaning (Ghazal, 2007). As English learners, the first thing that they need to
learn is vocabulary. According to Wilkins, (cited in Harmer, 2002) “without grammar
very little thing can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.”. It is
true, because word is the basis of language. Word emerges as vocabulary and English
learners have to pay more attention in learning vocabulary.
Vocabulary is the central role in learning language (Woolf, 2008), thus, it is
important to choose words to be taught carefully. To know the characteristics of
