ABSTRACT
Politeness Strategies in Giving Compliments and Nindya Galuh Aprillia. C0311031.Responding to Compliments Based on the Movie Entitled Sex and the City Seasons 1
and 2 (A Pragmatics Approach). Thesis: English Department, Faculty of Cultural
Sciences, Sebelas Maret University. This research was conducted to analyze about the topics of compliments uttered by the characters in Sex and the City Seasons 1 and 2. It was also conducted to describe the way the characters employed the politeness strategies through compliment expressions and compliment responses.
This research is based on a Pragmatics approach that focuses on compliments expressions and compliments responses. This research applies descriptive qualitative research. The source of data in this research is the movies entitled Sex and the City seasons 1 and 2. There are thirty-four dialogues chosen as data and analyzed with the Brown Levinson
’s politeness theory. There are three main findings in this research. First, the types of topics of compliments. There are four types of topics of compliments: topic of appearance, topic of possession, topic of specific-act ability, and topic of general ability. The characters commonly use the topic of appearance to express the compliments. Second, the speakers employed positive politeness strategies in delivering the compliments. The characters use the positive politeness strategy in various ways. This includes noticing the hearer, giving special attention, exaggerating, using words of empathy, and giving a gift to the hearer. Finally, the characters respond to compliments with positive politeness and off record strategy. The complimentees mostly accept the compliment by giving gratitude toward the compliments. They also use two kinds of acceptances; verbal acceptance and non-verbal acceptance. The verbal acceptance includes thanking, joking, giving positive comment or reason toward the compliments. Meanwhile, the non-verbal acceptance includes smiling, laughing, and nodding. In addition, some complimentees do not accept the compliments. The complimentees prefer to say nothing, respond it with an irrelevant comment, or shift the topic to reject the compliment politely.
