This paper evaluates and examines the gender of traditional

f i n a n c i a l m e a s u r e m e n t (R .01) a n d B S t h r o u g h a c u l t u r a l a n a l y s i s ,

i.e. I s l a m , T a o a n d J a v a n e s e t ra d i t io n . Having evaluating the gender of the measurements, the paper continually evaluates their w e a k n e s s e s a n d a t t e m p t s t o r e f o r m u l a t e t h e m in a p r o p e r m a n n e r .

A n i n s t r u m e n t o f a n a l y s i s is f o r m u l a t e d b a s e d o n I s la m , T a o a n d J a v a n e s e t r a d i t i o n . In e s s e n c e , t h e i n s t r u m e n t u t i li z e s ' ‘s y n e r g y o f binary opposition" which deconstructs “the Center” through

internalizing “the others.” The results of the analysis

indicate that the performance measurements are strongly masculine-laden.

The masculine v a l u e s a r e t h e o n e s t h a t t e n d t o b e e x p a n s i v e a n d d e s t r u c t i v e fo r s o c i a l o r d e r s o f h u m a n life a n d n a t u r a l e n v i r o n m e n t . T o e l i m i n a t e the negative effects of the masculine values, the paper suggests modification of the performance measurements by harmonizing

a n d b a l a n c i n g m a s c u l i n e v a l u e s w i th f e m i n i n e o n e s .

T r a d i t i o n a l l y , p e r f o r m a n c e m e a s u r e m e n t in g e n e r a l c o n s t a n t l y l i n k e d to t h e f i n a n c i a l a s p e c t . T h e m e a s u r e p a y s a tt e n t i o n o n p r i m a r i l y a c o m p a n y ’s p r o f i t a b i l i t y t h a t i n d i c a t e s t h e a b i l i t y o f t h e c o m p a n y to a c q u i r e p ro f it . T h e m e a s u r e f r e q u e n t l y u s e d is return on investment (ROl). Due to the frequent use

o f t h e m e a s u r e , t h e m a j o r i t y o f b u s i n e s s s o c i e t y is n o t b e i n g c r it i c a l t o t h e m e a s u r e . Performance measurement essentially affects management behavior (or o t h e r c o n c e r n e d p a r ti e s ) . g o o d o r b a d , r i g h t o r w r o n g , j u s t i c e o r i n j u s t ic e o n l y b a s e d o n u ti li ty a s a re s u lt of an action. Yet this ethics become a fundamental value of capitalistic economic system.

The ethics of utilitarianism powerfully affect capitalists' (shareholders and

c r e d i t o r s ) b e h a v i o r w h o h a v e c o n c e r n o n c a p it a l i n v e s t e d t o e a r n s p ro f it . B a s e d on t h i s v i e w , it n o t s u r p r i s i n g , i f f i n a n c ia l p e r f o r m a n c e m e a s u r e m e n t , e s p e c i a l l y profitability becomes a main indicator for shareholders to keep a hold of and

e x t e n d t h e i r c a p it a l .

B a s e d o n t h e a b o v e d e s c r i p t i o n , it is u n d e r s t o o d t h a t f in a n c i a l p e r f o r m a n c e m e a s u r e m e n t is in f a c t a p a r ti a l m e a s u r e m e n t , t e n d s t o t a k e s i d e o n u t il it a r ia n shareholders, and tends to exploit other stakeholders and natural environment. Financial measurement essentially provides past information of managerial p e r f o r m a n c e . T h e i n f o r m a t i o n b e c o m e s le s s a d e q u a t e t o e v a l u a t e c o m p a n y ' s development that orients to the creation future value through investments on customer, supplier, labor, process, technology, and innovation. Therefore, BS

According to Bessire (2000), Kaplan and N o r t o n ’s ( 1 9 9 6 ) “ m i s s i o n ” a c t u a l l y is n o t t h e t r u e m i s s i o n , b u t m o r e l ik e l y as ■‘o b j e c t i v e '’ o r “ s t r a t e g y . ” T h u s , it d o e s n o t i n s p i r e a s t h e y m e n t i o n e d .

Secondly , t h e r e is d u b i o u s r a ti o n a l i t y o f t h e s e l e c t e d f o u r p e r s p e c t i v e s ( f in a n c i a l , c u s t o m e r , i n t e r n a l b u s i n e s s p r o c e s s , a n d g r o w t h ) . T h e fi rs t a n d s e c o n d

perspective indicates an objective to balance the interests of shareholders and

c u s t o m e r s . W h i l e t h e la s t t w o p e r s p e c t i v e s l i n k e d to t h e i n s t r u m e n t u s e d to

a c h i e v e g o a l o f s a t i s f y i n g s h a r e h o l d e r s a n d c u s t o m e r s ( B e s s i r e 2 0 0 0 , 12-1 3 ).

Besides the weaknesses mentioned by Bessire (2000), this paper attempts to discloses other weaknesses. Firstly, in f a c t B S still p o s e s f i n a n c i a l o b j e c t i v e s ( t h a t is, p r o f i t m a x i m i z a t i o n ) a s t h e o n l y o b j e c t i v e o f a c o m p a n y a s K a p l a n a n d Norton (1996, 61) said,
