This final project is about using blog as media to teach recount text to the
eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Semarang, in the academic year of 2011/2012.
The objectives of this study are to find out whether teaching writing recount by
using a blog as the medium is effective to improve students‟ ability of writing
recount text and to find out whether there is any improvement of students„ ability
of writing recount text after being taught using blog. Previously, teachers only
taught recount text using conventional way such as asking their students to write
in piece of paper. By using blog, writing lesson can be more enjoyable,
communicative and interactive since the student not only can write but also can
compare their previous work to their current one so that they can understand what
their mistake is. The object of this study was the year eight students of SMPN 5
Semarang. I took class VIII - D as her object in this study through random
sampling technique. In order to achieve the objective, I designed an action
research that was carried out through a pre-test, cycle 1, and cycle 2. I used

writing test, observation checklist, and questionnaire as her instruments in
collecting the data. There were five meetings in this research. First meeting was
used for conducting pre-test, second and third meeting was used to conduct cycle
1 and formative-test, fourth meetings were used to conduct cycle 2, and the last
meeting was used to held post-test. The results of this study showed that the
students‟ ability of writing recount text improved in each test. I found that there
was a significant difference of the result of the students‟ mean score in pre-test,
formative-test, and post-test. Besides, the students‟ writing skill (organization,
content, grammar, punctuation, and style and quality of expression) also made a
good progress in each test. Based on the results of the research, it can be
concluded that there was a significant improvement of students‟ ability of writing
recount text after being taught using blog. While from the result of the observation
checklist and questionnaire, the students gave good responses after being taught
using blog. It could be concluded that a blog was a helpful medium in teaching
writing recount text.
