ABSTRACT

This thesis is to find out the listening strategies mostly used by the students in their listening activities both in and out class. Since it is doubted whether or not the students understand and applied some listening strategies while they are listening, the writer conducted research to obtain the answer of the questions.

The population involved in this research was 100 students of S1 and D3 from the year 2003, 2004, and 2005 of English Department Faculty of Letters Soegijapranata Catholic University. There were twenty one listening strategies in this research which were used by the students. The data were obtained through questionnaire as the main instrument in this research.

By employing the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program, it was found out that the listening strategy mostly used by the students is recognizing and using formula and patterns. The result shows that the score of the mean from this variable is the biggest, which are 2.95. Moreover, it is also found that the lowest score of the mean is 2.36 on the variable of representing sounds in memory, which means the students seldom use this strategy while they are listening.

Based on the result, it can be concluded that the listening strategy mostly used by the students in Faculty of Letters is the strategy of recognizing and using formula and patterns. It means that the most of the students applied the listening strategy of recognizing and using formula and patterns while they are listening to get the success of their listening activities. However, the success of the listening activities are not only determined by listening strategies which students applied, but also there are some factors that influence such as ability, motivation, and environment.
