Education

Opportunities for chemists are changing. Graduate enrollment in chemistry

programs is on the rise, but so too is unemployment among new chemistry graduates.
In this turbulent job market, chemistry education must both prepare students for
life after graduate school and equip them with the skills necessary to tackle societal
problems. The National Research Council’s Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology
convened representatives from across the chemical enterprise to discuss critical
issues afecting chemistry graduate education and ofer suggestions to help shape current and future
chemistry programs. Challenges in Chemistry Graduate Education: A Workshop Summary
records the ideas exchanged at the event.
Two brochures make those ideas practical for students and faculty: How to Make
Your Chemistry Education Work for You gives students tips on taking advantage
of graduate school to gain skills that will prove invaluable for any career—in
academia, industry, or beyond. Preparing Your Chemistry Students for Life
After Graduate School advises faculty on preparing students for professional life,

while also making the laboratory a more productive and positive environment.
