ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to find out whether there was any correlation between
students’ achievement in Critical Reading and students’ achievement in Narrative and
Descriptive Writing at the English Department, Satya Wacana Christian University.Data used
in this study were students’ final scores in Critical Reading and Narrative and Descriptive.
There were 92 students taking both courses in the semester. The scores were then tested for
scores normality by looking at descriptive statistics scores, normality curves, and scatterplots.
Since the students’ scores in Critical Reading and Narrative and Descriptive Writing did not
have a normal distribution, Spearman Rank Correlation was used instead of Pearson
Correlation Coefficient. It was discovered that Critical Reading had a weak correlation with
Narrative and Descriptive Writing. This study calls for a further study to be conducted to
identify other factor(s) that contribute(s) to the relationship between Critical Reading and
Narrative and Descriptive Writing.
