Preface
The underlying document is one of the elements of an innovative capacity
building project by BGP Engineers, TNO, Afvalzorg bv and UNESCO-IHE
from The Netherlands and Universitas Mohammadiyah Malang (UMM) from
Indonesia, funded by the EVD of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The project
aims at building capacity among institutions, waste engineers and managers
on technical, environmental, social and energy issues of solid waste
management.
A major element of this project is the development of educational material for

a Solid Waste Management course at UMM. The material consists of two
parts. Part one is meant for undergraduate students from a variety of
disciplines and deals broadly with technical, environmental, social,
institutional and financial issues of SWM. Part two is designed specifically for
undergraduate students of the engineering stream and discusses technical
issues related to planning, design, engineering and implementation. This
stream aims at building technical know-how related to Solid Waste
Management in Indonesia.
The production of this material, which consists of 22 chapters of text and
related presentations, is a joint effort by the partners of the project:
BGP Engineers – Matsen Jorritsma, Wim Maaskant
TNO – Wilfred Appelman, Arjan van Horssen, Jack Pesik
