Report Highlights:
Mexico is currently modernizing their Free Trade Agreement with the European Union (TLCUEM). As
a part of this process, Mexico has opened an opposition process for Geographical Indications that could
be included in the agreement. Comments are due by October 9, 2017.

Background:
Mexico is currently modernizing their Free Trade Agreement with the European Union (known as
TLCUEM). Under the Commercial Pillar of the Agreement, there are ongoing discussions to “establish
adequate recognition and protection of intellectual property rights.” Under the Intellectual Property
chapter, the parties to the Agreement are considering the recognition and protection of Geographical
Indications.
In particular, the European Union seeks to protect certain names as Geographical Indications. The
Government of Mexico defines “Geographical Indication,” as the name of a product which identifies the
geographical area or other indication known to refer to that area. The name thereby attributes a
particular quality, reputation, or other characteristic due to its geographical origin.
The Opposition Period:
On the 10th of August, 2017, through the Diario Oficial (Federal Register) the Government of Mexico
announced a comment period for the list of Geographical Indications requested by the European Union
as a part of the modernization of the TLCUEM. The list includes a variety of cheese, wine, meat, etc.

A copy of the notification is at the end of this report.
