  Recently, the government uses English as one of the point target of National Examination in every junior and senior high school. It means that every student must master English to graduate from their school. And the success of mastering English depends on the competence of writing. So, every teacher thinks how to make their students understand well and master English. They asked their students to join English course extracurricular and additional course to get the main purpose, mastering English.

  The objective of this research is to find out the correlation between the writing ability of the students and joining the English Course in the seventh grade students of SMP N 01 Donorojo Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012.

  The design of this research is correlation research research. The population is all of the seventh grade students of SMP N 01 Donorojo Jepara in the academic year 2011/2013. The total numbers are 117 students. The writer takes the sample by using cluster random sampling. Cluster random sampling is used to take the class which is consists of the students who join the English course. The writer makes a lottery and writes the name of classes in the seventh grade in small paper. After that she shakes the paper. Finally she gets VII A as the sample with the total is 32 students. To get the data, the writer uses documentation and questionnaire.

  The result of this research shows that there is a significant correlation between the writing ability of the students and joining the English Course in the seventh grade students of SMP N 01 Donorojo Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012. It based on the calculation result using product moment correlation. It is found that r = 2.89 is higher than r = 0.449.

  Based on the result of this research above, the writer suggests to the English teachers; they should apply the system of supervision; e.g. giving punishment and appreciation to the students like in the English course, so the activities of teaching learning can monitored well.

  Akhir-akhir ini, pemerintah menggunakan Bahasa Inggris sebagai salah satu target ketuntasan dalam Ujian Nasional di tingkat SMP dan SMA. Ini mengindikasikan siswa untuk menguasai Bahasa Inggris supaya bisa lulus. Dan kesuksesan dalam penguasaan Bahasa Inggris tergantung pada kualitas aspek menulis. Sehingga setiap guru berupaya agar siswa mampu memahami dan menguasai Bahasa Inggris sebaik-baiknya. Mereka menyarankan siswa untuk mengikuti kursus Bahasa Inggris untuk dapat mengusasi Bahasa Inggris.

  Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mecari apakah ada hubungan yang berarti antara kemampuan menulis Bahasa Inggris dengan mengikuti program kursus Bahasa Inggris pada siswa kelas VII SMP N 01 Donorojo Jepara tahun ajaran 2011/2012.

  Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian korelasi. Populasinya seluruh kelas

  VII SMP N 01 Donorojo Jepara tahun ajaran 2011/2012. Jumlah keseluruhannya adalah 117 siswa. Penulis mengambil sampel dengan menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling. Teknik ini digunakan untuk mengambil sampel kelas yang terdiri dari siswa yang mengikuti program kursus Bahasa Inggris. Penulis menggunakan lotre dan menuliskan nama seluruh kelas VII di kertas-kertas kecil. Kemudian penulis mengocoknya. Akhirnya penulis mendapatkan kelas VIIA sebagai sampel penelitian dengan jumlah siswa 32 orang. Untuk mendapatkan data prestasi pencapaian menulis siswa, penulis menggunakan dokumentasi dan angket.

  Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan yang berarti antara kemampuan menulis Bahasa Inggris dengan mengikuti program kursus Bahasa Inggris pada siswa kelas VII SMP N 01 Donorojo Jepara tahun ajaran 2011/2012. Hal ini berdasarkan hasil perhitungan product moment yang menjelaskan bahwa r o = 2.89 lebih besar daripada r t = 0.449.

  Berdasarkan penelitian di atas, penulis menyarankan kepada para guru Bahasa Inggris agar menerapkan bentuk pengawasan seperti pemberian sanksi dan penghargaan kepada para murid sebagaimana yang terlaksana dpada kursus Bahasa Inggris, sehingga aktifitas belajar mengajar dapat terkontrol dengan baik.
