ABSTRACT
Motivation is a significant element which affects students’ learning outcomes. Research has
shown that online learning has advantages that facilitate students’ learning. In relation to that,
there are some factors which could increase or decrease students’ motivation in online learning.
This study was conducted to investigate the factors affecting students’ motivation toward online
learning. 12 students of the English Language and Education program, Faculty of Language and
Arts, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana Salatiga were interviewed in this study. Through the
open-ended questions in the semi-structured interview, the participants showed three significant
elements that give motivational effect to them toward online learning; benefits, barriers, and
challenges in online learning. The finding suggests that teachers need to provide well-designed
materials and activities in online learning.
