THE TEACHERS’ PURPOSES IN USING INDONESIAN IN TEACHING
ENGLISH FOR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Yuni Kurnia Mustikawati

ABSTRACT
The use of L1 in L2 classroom has been a controversy in educational field.
The L2 teachers have to make decision about their teaching method including
the use of L1 in L2 classrooms. This study examined the teacher’s purposes
why Indonesian is used in English classrooms. Three English teachers in
three different schools participated in this study. The data was collected by
observing the classroom activity (audio recording). The result showed that
teachers’ purposes in using L1 are mostly to explain the meaning of words.
Students usually find some difficult words in a task, and in this situation
teacher should be able to explain them using L1 to make the meaning clearer.

Key words : L1, L2, teachers’ purpose
