SITUATION REPORT: DPR Korea Flooding
Emergency Events Alert and Response
13 October 2016 - Sitrep 4
Situation Analysis:
The government has initiated daily reporting of relevant epidemic prone diseases from the affected
areas to the counties, the provincial and national levels. In the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) an
Emergency Operations Room has been set up to plan and coordinate response based on available
information from the field. The Emergency Operation Room works 24/7.
According to MoPH sources, the two important diseases being reported from the field are diarrhoeal
diseases and acute respiratory diseases (ARI). Data from early September to the first week of October
show that initially the number of diarrhoeal diseases is showing a decreasing trend while the number of
ARI cases are on the rise. However, there is no report of any deaths. MoPH will soon share the disease
trend data with WHO and partners.
Response:
WHO has supported 10 544 m² of roofing materials for the reconstruction of the health facilities. These
have arrived at Namyang on 12 October 2016. Resource mobilization has been successfully achieved
with funding support from regional health emergency funds (WHO SEARHEF) and CERF. WHO has
received the approval of CERF for around USD750 000.
MoPH has identified increased risk of tetanus among the construction workers in the area, for which
they are planning to conduct two rounds of Td vaccination campaign for this high risk group. WHO will
support the campaign.
Key priority areas for the international community to support the Government response:
-
Tracking of important epidemic prone diseases through daily reporting system for early
detection and response in case of any outbreaks
Provision of essential medicines and health supplies, and rehabilitation/construction of
affected health facilities
Immediate provision of clean water and sanitation facilities to the affected population
Nutritious food and therapeutics for prevention and treatment of malnutrition
