Overcoming My Difficultiy in Handling a Hyperactive Boy Aged Seven Years Old at Education and Learning Solution.

ABSTRACT
Education and Learning Solution” sebagai topik tugas akhir saya.

kelas.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

This term paper is based on my internship at Education and Learning Solution
(henceforth, ELS) from June 16, 2015 until August 14, 2015. ELS is an education
course where children and adults can learn subjects such as Math, English,
Mandarin, and motor skills. I had a position as a teacher and I was given an
opportunity to teach children with special needs. I had to teach three classes with
around 20 students in total. I had a flexible schedule which meant I could teach
different numbers of students each day. Sometimes I would teach privately, but
most of the time there were about eleven students in the class which I taught. I
dealt with students with different characteristics and ages. Each and every one of
them is unique. As a teacher, I had to teach and also attend a meeting to discuss
teaching-learning program, make lesson plan, prepare teaching aids, help students
while they were doing activities and make study report for the owner of ELS and
the students’ parents. I also learned to improve my soft skill through explaining to
the parents about their children’s progress in learning and having to cooperate
well with other teachers.

During my internship, I faced several problems. However, there was one boy
who became my main focus. He could not sit still on his chair and he walked back
and forth. Sometimes, he would run around the classroom and bother me. He also
talked excessively and was very easily distracted. His behaviors show that he is a
hyperactive child, as stated by Melissa Conrad Stoppler (2014),
Hyperactivity is a state of excess activity that may be manifested by
symptoms such as fidgeting, jumpiness, nervousness, or excessive movement.
It is often accompanied by difficulty concentrating or focusing on a task,
excessive talking, or difficulty remaining quiet in school (para. 1).
Hyperactivity is one of the signs of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or
ADHD in short. As stated by Virtual Medical Centre (2015), “ADHD is
characterized by symptoms such as impulsivity, hyperactivity and/or inattention.”
The boy who became my main focus has not been properly diagnosed with
ADHD yet, but he is doing his medical therapy of severe hyperactivity. His severe
hyperactivity has shown a symptom of disorder, which has also affected his
academic performance and social relationship. Virtual Medical Centre (2014)
stated, “Many normal children may at times be hyperactive or restless, but when
the hyperactivity begins to affect performance in school, social relationships or
behaviour at home, an underlying disorder may be suspected.”

When the boy could not stop talking in class, I failed to keep him focused on
the lesson so I went along with his conversation because I was too frustrated
handling his excessive talking. When he ran away to avoid me asking him
questions, I sat on the chair and I was unable to do anything because he could not
stop moving and it overwhelmed me. I could not handle the boy because I failed

2

to keep him focused on the lesson. I could not keep him from running in class, I
could not stop him from talking too much during lesson, and sometimes smaller
and unimportant things such as mosquitoes caught his attention more than my
lesson.
I chose Overcoming My Difficulty in Handling a Hyperactive Boy Aged seven
years old at Education and Learning Solution as the topic of my term paper
because I would like to find out the solutions on how to handle a hyperactive
student. If this problem is solved, I would feel confident when I teach hyperactive
students because I will be able to understand them better. Therefore, I think this

would be the best topic for me.

B. Identification of the Problem
The problem that I am going to analyze is my difficulty in handling a
hyperactive boy aged seven years old at ELS. The problem of my analysis is
formulated in the following questions:
1. Why did I face difficulty in handling a hyperactive 7-year-old boy during
my internship at ELS?
2. How did the problem influence the boy and me?
3. How should I effectively handle this boy in the classroom?

3

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study
The objective of writing this term paper is to elaborate the causes and effects of
the problem and also the potential solutions. This term paper is expected to help
other teachers either in ELS or in other education institutions to have better

understanding about the causes and effects of hyperactiveness in class.
Furthermore, the teachers may apply the solutions to the problem which I have
analyzed on my term paper.
For the readers, this term paper is expected to give more information and
knowledge about hyperactive students and potential solutions on how to handle
them, especially in the classroom. This is useful if they have acquaintances or
relatives who are hyperactive.
For me as a writer, this term paper is helpful so that I would gain more
knowledge in dealing with hyperactive students. In case I meet other hyperactive
students in the future, I would be able to handle them more effectively by using
this paper as my guidance.

D. Description of the Institution
Education and Learning Solution is an institution that works in education field.
ELS was located on Jalan Mekar Kencana no. 58A and is currently moved to
Jalan Mekar Harum no. 18. Based on the written source on ELS brochure (n.d),
ELS has a commitment to children’s future. With experienced teacher staff and
various programs, children will find that learning can be fun. They can also build
friendship and good relationship with the teachers. Based on the interview with

Maranatha Christian University

the owner of ELS (August 10, 2015), Ms. Elisa, ELS was first opened on
November 30, 2009. ELS was built because she saw an opportunity to build a
learning centre due to a large number of schools in Mekarwangi area and because
she likes teaching children. She took teaching as her concentration when she was
still a college student of D3 English Program in Maranatha Christian University
and she obtained her first teaching experience by teaching at a language course
when she was in the second semester. After gaining the experience, she then had
the confidence to open her own learning centre.
The first time ELS was opened, it had around 12 teachers and 60-90 students.
ELS has classes with varieties such as English, Mandarin, and Mathematics. For
young learners, ELS offers Reading, Writing, Counting class and also Motor skill
class. Furthermore, there is Creativity class where children learn how to draw and
color. The facilities provided in ELS are library, children playground, whiteboards
and enough tables and chairs in every class. ELS’s slogan is “The Creative Ways
for Learning”, which means ELS believes that there are many creative and fun

ways for learning. There is an interesting information about ELS. When most
learning centers only offer learning programs for children who are still in school,
ELS accepts adult students. In other words, ELS is opened to all ages. The
difference between ELS and other learning centres is that ELS applies Multiple
Intelligence to their students.

E. Method of the Study
The data used in this term paper are taken from library research such as books
and articles from the Internet and field research such as internship journal, and
interview. The interview source is Ms. Elisa, the owner of Education and Learning
Solution. The interview took place at ELS around 11 a.m during my internship.
The journal is based on my internship at ELS from 16 June 2015 until 14 August
2015. These data are used to analyze the causes, effects, and solutions of the
problem.

F. Limitation to the Study
The focus of my study is my difficulty in handling a hyperactive boy aged
seven years old at Education and Learning Solution. He is a second grader at
Trimulia Hits Elementary School. My position was a teacher. My internship
started from 16 June 2015 until 14 August 2015. I taught him for around three
weeks and I was overwhelmed by his rapid and constant movements which caused
negative effects both to the boy and me.

G. Organization of the Term Paper
This term paper starts with the Abstract, which is the summary of the whole
chapters of the term paper in Indonesian. The purpose is to let readers know the
whole content of the term paper briefly. Then, there is Declaration of Originality

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION

In this chapter, I would like to present the best potential solution to my
problem. The problem is my difficulty in handling a hyperactive 7-year-old boy in
ELS. The causes of my problem are I gave the student difficult worksheets which
made him frustrated, I lacked of teaching experience, and I did not communicate
well with the student’s parents. The problem resulted in three effects which are
the student could not engage in activities quietly, I felt frustrated during teaching,
and the student had difficulties in finishing his class work and homework. I have
three potential solutions to overcome my problem. First, I will be consistent and
disciplined in applying the rules. Second, I will use physical activities in the
classroom. Third, I will build a good relationship with the student’s parents.
I have decided to apply all of my potential solutions as the best potential
solutions to my problem because mixing all the three potential solutions is the
most effective way to deal with my problem. First, I will be consistent and
disciplined about my rules from the very beginning of the class. When the boy
understands the rules, he will behave better in class. Then, I will use physical
activities in class such as Treasure Hunt, Simon Says, and Freeze. It has been
proven that healthy and physically active students are more likely to behave well

18
Maranatha Christian University

in class. After that, I will build a good relationship with his parents by holding a
parent-teacher meeting regularly to discuss about the student’s academic and
personal behavior. If I use all of these potential solutions, I will be able to handle
the student well in the classroom.
To conclude, I have learnt that it is a challenge for me to handle the boy
effectively in class. My weaknesses in teaching this particular boy have resulted in
negative effects such as the boy could not engage in activities quietly, I felt
frustrated during teaching, and the boy had difficulties in finishing his school
work and homework. By applying all of these potential solutions, I hope I can
handle the boy or other students with similar condition better.
I hope ELS will provide suitable worksheets for students that come from
various schools because each school’s material is different. I also hope ELS would
make written rules about ELS regulations so teachers and students could follow
the rules created by ELS.
