BY THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 1

SURAKARTA.Research Paper. Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. 2012.

This research aims to describe the learning strategies used by second year students ofSMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakartawho has high, middle, and low mark in English subject to improve their reading ability.

The writer applies a case study as the type of research. She uses interview, documentation, and observation for collecting the data. The data are taken from the subject of the research in the form of field notes, interview, and document.

The result of the research shows that the three subjects of this research use metacognitive, cognitive and social/affective strategies based on O Malley and Chamot to improve their reading skill. The first subject who has high mark applies eleven learning strategies, second subject who has middle mark applies eight learning strategies, and third subject who has low mark applies five learning strategies. The first subject uses metacognitive strategies: advance organization, self-evaluation, and self-management, cognitive strategies: resourcing, note taking, imagery, elaboration, and inferencing, social and affective strategies: questioning for clarification and cooperation. The second subject uses metacognitive strategies: advance organization, organizational planning, and self-evaluation learning strategies, cognitive strategies: resourcing, note taking, deduction, and imagery learning strategies, social and affective strategies: questioning for clarification strategy. The third subject uses self-evaluation learning strategies in metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies: resourcing, note taking, and imagery, social and affective strategies: questioning for clarification strategy.
