Discipline Problems Among Three Kindergarteners in First Class At Bintang Kecil Kindergarten.

ABSTRACT

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
For parents and teachers, teaching children in the period of time between
five to seven years old can lead to a difficult situation for the reason that
“They do not listen well; talkative, start arguing for something, whining, or
protesting if we ask them to do something” (“Indiscipline” par. 4). Discipline
problems occur when a student refuses to obey the rules of the classroom or
school. This situation can cause lack of discipline in the class.
In order to analyze discipline problems, it is important to explain the
definition of discipline. It is stated that:
Discipline comes from the Latin word disciplinare, which means to teach.

Discipline, properly practiced, uses a multifaceted approach, including
models, rewards, and punishments that teach and reinforce desired
behavior. Through discipline, children are able to learn self-control, selfdirection, competence, and a sense of caring (“Discipline” par.1).

From what has been stated, I believe that discipline can bring a lot of
positive changes in the behavior of the children.
Based on my observation when I did my internship at Bintang Kecil
Kindergarten in January 2009, I found that some children in Fish class
have a discipline problem. The undisciplined children usually make the
situation in the classroom becomes noisy and they disturb the other
children who are ready to learn. The undisciplined children are unable to
finish their tasks, and unable to participate in the learning activities.
Therefore, sometimes the teachers have to change the lesson plan
because there is not enough time for the children to do the task. Besides,
the teacher must wait until the undisciplined children pay attention to the
teacher.

This problem is interesting to discuss because discipline problems
often happen in the class. I would like to give the explanation of the
causes and effects from undisciplined children based on library research,
electronic research and observation during my internship at Bintang Kecil
Kindergarten. At the end I will give the solutions to handle the
undisciplined children, especially the children in Fish Class at Bintang
Kecil Kindergarten so as to give positive influences to the children so that
they learn discipline and create a positive atmosphere to generate selfdiscipline in the children.

B. Identification of the Problem
The problems which are being discussed in this term paper are as follows:
a. Why do the children at Fish Class have discipline problems in the
classroom?
b. What are the effects of having children with discipline problems in Fish
Class?
c. How could the teacher deal with the children showing discipline problems
in Fish Class?

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study
The objectives of this term paper are:
a. To know the causes of undisciplined children at Fish Class.
b. To find the effects of undisciplined children in Fish Class on the class.
c. To find out the best solution for the teacher to handle the discipline problem
effectively in Fish Class.
For Bintang Kecil teachers, this term paper can help them to handle
undisciplined children in their class with a different method, which they have
not applied before. Accordingly, I hope the situation in their class will be
better after they try this solution, so the aims of the lesson can be
accomplished in this class and the children can also learn to be disciplined.
For the readers, this term paper will give some information about

3

undisciplined children, so they will know how serious this problem is, and they
can prevent it from happening.
As for me, this term paper can help me to face a similar problem with
this kind of class or children and I can find a way to solve this problem from
happening.

D. Description of the Institution
Bintang Kecil kindergarten was established in 1997 at Kopo Permai I blok
A no. 0. The area is about two thousand meters square. In July 1997, Bintang
Kecil kindergarten began the class with a preschool for children of two years
old (one class) and playgroup (1 class) for children of three years old. This
school was established by Bina Insan Mulia foundation.
The method they use is “Creative and Active Learning”. They implement
the methods through indoor and outdoor programs, music, computer, and
field trips.
For eleven years, Bintang Kecil Kindergarten has already developed to
fulfill the needs of the society. Now, Bintang Kecil Kindergarten has nine
classes. They consist of preschool (two classes), playgroup (two classes),
and kindergarten A (three class) for children four to five years old, and
kindergarten B (two class) for children five to six years old.

Besides the formal class, Bintang Kecil Kindergarten opens “Child Care”
for the parents who have busy activities. In “Child Care” the teachers to
educate and take care of the children.

E. Method of the Study
To get the information needed, I use my internship journal which I
wrote when I was doing the internship for thirty days at Fish Class in Bintang
Kecil Kindergarten. I also asked the teacher in Fish Class about the
background of the children and the daily situation in that class. Besides, I find
some articles from the Internet and I read several books for the references.

F. Limitation of the Study
The subject of my research is three kindergarteners aged five to six years
who are studying English at Fish Class in Bintang Kecil Kindergarten, who
have a discipline problem. In this term paper, I will discuss the causes, the
effects and the best solution of the problem.

G. Organization of the Term Paper
The term paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is the
Introduction. It is divided into seven parts. First is the Background of the
Study. It explains the topic discussed and the reason for choosing the topic.
Second is the Identification of the Problem. It explains the problem I am going

to discuss in this term paper. Third is the Objectives and Benefits of the
Study. In this part, I will explain the aim that I want to reach in the end of
writing this term paper. Fourth is the Description of the Institution. This part
contains the description at the institution. Fifth is the Method of the Study. It
explains about the process of data gathering. Sixth is the Limitation of the
Study. In this part I will give the limitation of the topic discussed. Seventh is
the Organization of the Term Paper. It explains the sequence of chapters and
parts of this term paper briefly. The second chapter is Problem Analysis. In
this chapter, I will explain the causes and the effects of the problem. It also
contains the observation result that I got from my internship to support this
term paper. The third chapter is the Potential Solutions. It discusses the
potential solutions of the problem along with the positive and negative effects
of each solution. The last chapter is Conclusion. It discusses the best solution
and the suggestions on how to apply the solution.

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION

Based on the analysis in the previous chapters, I figure out that there
are three causes of having children with discipline problems in the class. First,
the children lack care from their parents. Second, there is a child who has
ADD. Third, the teachers do not enforce the rules consistently. There are
three effects of the problem; the children disturb the other children and make
noises in the class, the children will not have good academic achievement,
and the children can not focus on the lesson.
In this chapter, I would like to present the best solutions. Based on the
analysis, the best solution is applying two of the solutions, which are the
teachers give positive reinforcement and the teachers must be consistent with
the rules and the setting of time to complete the tasks. The combination of
these two solutions could support each other. McClure said that “Discipline
should be consistent all the time. Do try, however, to instill consistent rules,
approaches, and even goals and rewards each day” (par.2). I agree with the
statement. The teachers need to be consistent both in giving positive
reinforcement and in implementing the rules in the class. The children will

17

Maranatha Christian University

learn consistently about the time and learn to be obedient to the rules and the
setting of time. The better actions they do the more positive reinforcement
they get.
I believe that giving positive reinforcement will help the teacher to
handle the classroom’s discipline. The children will pay more attention to the
teacher because positive reinforcement can raise their motivation. For
example, the children can be motivated to participate in learning activities,
then they will not disturb the other children, so the progress in learning will be
better. This solution can be used for the ADD child because the effective
ways to handle an ADD child are by giving him care, attention and optimizing
his ability. Besides that, the teacher must be consistent with the rules and
setting of time because it will help the teacher to control the classroom and
not to waste time anymore. The children will learn discipline because they will
face the consequences if they break the rule, so good classroom
management will influence the students to act better than before.
I hope thesesolutions can be useful in helping teachers at Bintang
Kecil to deal with discipline problems. The children can also learn to be
disciplined and the teacher can reach their goals in the class.
