In doing my apprenticeship, I choose education because I like education
better than business and I also think that I have more talents and abilities in
teaching. Moreover, I choose to teach children because I love children and
because I think educating children is fun and important. The earlier children learn
about language, the better the result is, because children can absorb what they
learn faster than adults.
The reasons why I choose LLC as the place of my apprenticeship are
because, first, LLC is a place where I have worked and become a teacher before
I do my apprenticeship. Second, at LLC I learn many things and also improve my
teaching skills a lot.
LLC stands for Logic Learning Centre. LLC was founded on 27th July
2002. LLC is one of the education institutions that have high standard of quality.
The owners of LLC are Mr. Santoso, Mr. Kuncoro, Mr. Herry, and Mrs Elisabeth.
They believe that business in education is long-lasting.
LLC is run daily by Mrs Elisabeth and Mrs Aryanti. Mrs. Elisabeth is the
one responsible for everything in LLC because she has experience for almost
twenty years in education. She is a teacher in SMPK, SMUK 1 BPK and was a
lecturer in faculty of letter of Maranatha Christian University. In January 2003,
Mrs. Aryanti was hired as the coordinator to help Mrs. Elisabeth in managing
LLC.

LLC wants to change the interpretation of people that learning is
something difficult and boring. The vision and mission of LLC is to make children
think that learning is fun. To realize it, LLC provides the necessary facilities like
computers, scanners, air conditioners, a canteen, a kitchen, 6 classes, and a
library. They also provide many kinds of lessons like English, Mandarin and also
private lessons to help students who have difficulties at school. The English
classes in LLC use teaching methods and also English learning and teaching
books from Singapore. The students will get certificates after finishing one
semester. LLC also has “calistung “class, which teaches reading, writing, and
counting for three until eight years old students. As for the Mandarin class, LLC
hires a native speaker from China to be a teacher.
To become a teacher at LLC, one should have a good personality, high
integrity, be honest, loyal and initiative. He or she should be 21 years old or older,
also a graduate from S1 or DIII Programme of English, Mandarin, or Economy.
He or she and be cooperative, should like and be patient with children, be able to
the students. He or she should also be able to use the computer especially
Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Especially for an English teacher, one
should possess good English skills. The same requirement goes for a Mandarin
teacher.
The routine that I always do at LLC are briefing, preparing the
assignments and the lesson plans before class, preparing and making sure that
the activities and materials are suitable with the age and the ability of the
children. I also should make weekly reports on the material and all activities
taught. There is also weekly discussion and evaluation with the coordinator.
My schedules when I become an apprenticeship at LLC are every
Monday and Thursday I teach first until four grade from two o’clock until four
2
Maranatha Christian University
o’clock and then on Tuesday and Friday, I teach kindergarten at two o’clock until
three o’clock, I have break time until five o’clock. At five o’clock I teach five until
six grade.
My dominating assignments are teaching English according to the topic
and material that we prepared beforehand, making sure that the children
understand the material, and reviewing the material at the end of class.
The difficulty that I face when I teach is sometimes the children do not do
what I ask them to because they prefer chatting with their friends, do not pay
attention, or there is noise outside the class. I solve this situation with the help of
the teacher assistants. I usually ask the teacher assistants to come closer to the
student to refocus their attention. Sometimes when the student is crying, I ask
one of the teacher assistants to take him/her outside the classroom to calm
him/her.
The English skills that I use during my apprenticeship are speaking and
reading. From the two aspects, speaking is the aspect that I use the most. I use
this when I teach the students, give instructions, explain the lessons, and when I
teach the students how to say certain words with the right pronunciation. Reading
skill is used when I read the reference books.
According to the LLC coordinator, I have enough teaching experience so
that I can handle the class well and if there is a problem occurs in the class, I can
handle it quickly. However, I should improve my English skills, especially my
speaking skill, because it is very important to teach the students the right
pronunciation. I should also learn how to cooperate with others, follow the right
instructions, and finish my tasks on time.
Finally, I can conclude that I get many experiences and benefits during
my apprenticeship. I can expand my abilities and skills in teaching and also learn
3
Maranatha Christian University
many things. I practice more on how to teach, make lesson plans, manage the
class and work in team.
I have a few suggestions for LLC, I think it would be better if the level of
the lesson and the children’s ability in the class are standardized LLC should hold
placement tests in order to put the students in the right level. Another suggestion,
I think LLC must add some new teachers because the number of the student at
the moment is not appropriate with the teacher.
I also have my suggestion for DIII English Networking Programme, I hope
the apprenticeship programme will be maintained because it is very useful for the
students to have real work experience and know how to work with other people.
Moreover I think the lesson that support apprenticeship such as Techniques for
Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Teaching English to Young Learners,
for education sector and English for Tourism, English for Business, and also
Public Relations Communications for business sector, must be maintain because
all of them are very useful for the students in doing their apprenticeship.
