DETERMINING COMPETENCY DETERMINING INDICATORS

49 students 31.40 stated that the problem was at finding the main idea, 51 students 42.15 stated that finding the supporting sentences was the problem. The problems were used as references to design the materials which were appropriate for the students. To overcome their problems 98 80.99 students would use dictionary, 89 students 73.55 would ask the teacher, 6 students 4.96 would ignore it. The table above also revealed the techniques used to learn reading. 97 students 80.16 stated that the teacher used question and answer activity to teach in class, 19 students 15.70 stated that the teacher used lecturing to teach in class, 71 students 58,68 stated that the teacher used discussion to teach in class. Moreover, there were some media used by the teacher. 69 students 57,02 stated that the teacher used pictures to teach in class, one student 0,83 stated that the teacher used OHP to teach in class, 98 students 80,99 stated that the teacher used tape to teach in class, 88 students 72,73 stated that the teacher used video to teach in class. It could be said that the teachers had used some media to teach in class.

B. DETERMINING COMPETENCY

STANDARD, BASIC COMPETENCE, AND TOPICS. The writer determined the competency standard based on the 2006 curriculum. According to 2006 curriculum, the standard competency of reading for the seventh grade students of Junior High School was to understand the meaning in short and simple functional texts related to nearest environments 50 2006: 281. After determining the competency standard, the topics were listed by the writer. The topics were based on 2006 curriculum to the seventh grade of Junior High school. There were eight topics developed. They are arranged as follows: Unit 1 : Introduction Unit 2 : School life Unit 3 : Family Unit 4 : Shopping Unit 5 : Foods and drinks Unit 6 : Hobbies Unit 7 : Professions Unit 8 : Animals After stating the topics, the writer formulated the basic competence of each topic. The basic competencies were taken from 2006 curriculum. They are presented as follows: Table 4.2. The Basic Competencies Subject Basic Competence READING At the end of lesson, the students are able to:  Read aloud word meanings, phrases and sentences related to the environment with the correct pronunciation, stresses, and intonations.  Respond to word meanings accurately and fluently in simple functional texts related to the environment. 51

C. DETERMINING INDICATORS

In the 2006 curriculum, indicators were used to check whether the basic competences had been achieved or not. The indicators were selected for each unit in the eight units by the writer. All the presented topics should cover certain indicators. The indicators in the presented topics are stated as follows: Table 4.3.
