CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
Chapter I of this research present such topics as: background of study, statement of the problems, purposes of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, definition of the key terms. Each section is presented as follows.
1.1 Background of Study
Learning English consists of four skills; they are reading, writing, listening and speaking. The success of learning English can be affected by the students’ motivation because motivation is the key to all learning. According to Santrock (2011:438), “Motivation is something that energizes, directs, and sustains behavior”. Motivation is needed by the students’ in learning process because it is energy that supports the students’ to do something that they like and to facilitate them in accepting the lesson. Therefore, motivation is an important aspect in teaching and learning process. By having good motivation in learning English, students’ will be easy to do their activities well in the classroom, to access and transfer information.
The explanation of motivation include both inside and outside of the students’. These are called intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. According to Santrock (2011:441), “Intrinsic motivation involves the internal motivation to do something for one’s own sake, for example, a student may study hard for a test because she enjoys the content of the course. Extrinsic motivation is often influenced by external incentives such us reward and punishment. For example, a student may study hard for a test in order to obtain a good grade in the course”.
There are at least two studies that have been done in the field of motivation in learning English. Firstly, Cheng Tsai (2014) investigated students’ Motivation and Anxiety of English
(15)
Learning at Taiwan Technical University. He found that English learning anxiety had a little effect on English learning motivation for the different levels of language proficiency groups, especially for learners in the intermediate group. In general, extrinsic motivation plays an important role in English learning motivation to English-majoring students, whereas intrinsic motivation plays a significant part in English learning motivation to non-English-majoring students’.
