A. Research Design

This research used qualitative research design. Qualitative research focuses on naturally approaching the phenomena within a particular context instead of getting through some statistical procedures. Vanderstoep and Johnston 2009: 7 mentioned that qualitative research focuses on producing the textual description from the research participant’s experience, so that the data taken are in the form of words or pictures rather than numerical. As the data in qualitative research are not be in the form of statistical data, the methods of this study solve the actual problem by collecting, classifying, analysing, and interpreting data. Vanderstoep and Johnston, 2009: 7. Thus, the researcher only describes or explains the phenomena found in the objects of the study based on the core theory employed. Furthermore, content analysis is used to analyze the data. According to Kippendorf in Denscombe, 2007: 237, content analysis is basically used to examine the ‘hidden’ aspects of what is being delivered through the written text. There are ideas which are deeper than what the writer has consciously intended. The data are used to examine the phenomena in this study, those are: 1 the conventions of noir thriller in Harlan Cobe n’s The Stranger and 2 the conventions of point of view employed in the novel. 47
