CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents background of the study, statements of the problems,
purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definitions
of key terms. Each section is presented as follows.

1.1 Background of the Study
People have been quite familiar with works of art in their life. They can be
painting, architecture, music, or literature. Literature is a kind of art; usually it is a
written that offers pleasure illumination, for instance, poetry, drama, and prose. For
some people, literature is very enjoyable such as watching drama, writing novel, and
reading history, etc.
Literature is a product of language. Saini K.M and Jakob Sumardjo stated that
literature is human’s expression that can be in form of experiences, thoughts, feelings,
ideas, spirits, beliefs in a concrete way and can give pleasure through its language
(1986:3). It means literature has standard of expression from what the people have
shown in life, have experienced about life which interest in their experience directly
and forcefully.
According to Valery (in Koesnosoebroto, 1988), literature is kind of extension
and application of certain properties of language. It means that literature can be

1

developed by a language that is expressed by people such as through writing a literary
work. Whereas, according to Jones (1968: 1), “Literature is simply another way we
can experience the world around us through our imagination.”
The advantages of reading literary works are expanding the reader’s
imagination and giving enjoyment understanding of life because the literary work
talks about human life.
Generally, literary works are categorized into prose, poetry, and drama. Prose
includes novel, short story, legend, and fairy tale; prose includes poetry; and drama
includes opera, theater, and movie. In the other words, through literary work people
do not need to communicate with other people face to face and they can understand
its meaning.
Movie is one of media that contains sound, video animation, picture and it is
also supposed to be an image of real world. The advantages from watching movie are
not only giving us an entertainment and pleasure but also giving an education.
Through movie, people can understand about the development of science, art, and
technology that they do not know before.
For those advantages of movie, the researcher has two reasons why she is
interested in analyzing movie. First, that movie is a media of communication and
education; it is also a replica of the world life. Second, that movie is very interesting
to be analyzed because it not only makes the researcher understand the story from the
text but also from the motion of the pictures. Furthermore, the researcher takes the
main character’s social conflict because it is very interesting to be analyzed.

3

The researcher chooses a movie entitled “Step up 2” by Toni Ann Johnson and
Karien Barna, and tries to focus on the social conflict of the main character that is
Briana Evigan as Andie West. It is interesting to analyze social conflict because this
kind of conflict is different and unique compared to another conflict. Unique means
that a kind of conflicts occurs between people in one group. The person has to think
to find the cause of the conflict by analyzing the other’s personality. Then, the social
conflicts of the main character “ Andi West” is analyzed in this study because it tells
us about the conflict that often happen in human’s life. In addition, there is an
injustice feeling faced by the main character, Andie West planned to become a street
dancer; it is clearly meant for her.
This movie consists of arrange of events in life; thus, it is comparable with
people’s daily life. Then in this movie, social conflict is taken as the point of analysis
because social conflicts always happen through life and commonly happen in one’s
life. Through the movie the audiences can learn how to express something, and to
face their life.
1.2 Statement of the Problems
Based on the background above, the writer is interested in investigating
problems related to the main character, they are:
1. What are the social conflicts faced by the main character in “Step Up 2”
movie?
2. What are the causes of the main character’s social conflicts?

4

1.3 Purposes of the Study
In relation to the problem of study, the purposes of study are:
1. To know the social conflicts of the main character in “Step up 2 “movie.
2. To know the causes of the main character’s social conflicts.

1.4 Significance of the Study
Theoretically, this thesis is expected to give significant contribution to other
students who want to analyze movie. It is also expected to be an input for lectures
who teach literature course and for anyone who likes literature as well.
On practical significance, by reading this thesis, it is hoped the readers could
have a better understanding about problems that always happen in teaching especially
faced by the teacher which is found in “ Step up 2 “ movie.
1.5 Scope and Limitation
The scope of this research is about conflicts in “Step up 2 “movie. There are
many conflicts that can be found in this movie, such as: psychological conflict,
physical conflict, and social conflict. From those conflicts, the researcher is interested
in analyzing social conflict. The researcher limits the study only on the main
character’s social conflict.

5

1.6 Definition of Key Terms
In this study the researcher wants to give definition of key terms to avoid
reader’s misunderstanding.

comprehend the relationship between one element and other (Sujiman in Joko:
2003).
2. Main character is the character that appears dominantly of the story (Hornby:
1985).
3. Movie means a form of entertainment that enacts a story by sound and a
