ABSTRACT
The objective of this experiment is to know the circulation of heavy metals (Hg,
Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn) in the coastal sediment and body of water, and their influence upon the
plankton, benthic fauna, fish, mussel, drink water and human hair in Bitung. Moreover,
th~sexperiment is intended to know the relative strength of Hg, Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn afhity
to the coastal sediment, plankton, benthic fauna, fish, mussel, drink water and, human hair.
The study was conducted at the Bitung Coastal, from June 1998 until February 1999.
The coastal contain heavy metals Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn.In the rainy season Hg, Cd
was not detected in the body of water. The heavy metals observed were found in the
sediment of Bitung Coastal. The concentration of heavy metals were generally increased
by the river flow industry effluent to the coastal.

The heavy metals observed were found in the sediment of Bitung Coastal.
Concentration of Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn in the sediment were significantly different at the
location (P < 0.01). Only Hg was significantly different (P
