1.2 Research Questions
The problems to discuss in this study are: 1. How frequent do the students avoid phrasal verb types related to the semantic
complexity literal and figurative phrasal verbs? 2. Why do the learners do avoidance?
3. Does their avoidance give impact on their learning process? If any, how does the avoidance impact the learners in learning process?
1.3 The Scope of the Study
The analysis of this thesis belongs to the study of linguistics field that is second language acquisition. The discussion in this thesis is limited to the
language avoidance especially in lexical avoidance. To come to more comprehension analysis, it is limited to the avoidance of phrasal verbs in the case
of Indonesian learners of English in English Department of Faculty of Letters, Jember University. This study wants to know whether literal and figurative
meaning of phrasal verb influences the learners’ tendency in the avoidance of phrasal verbs. The subjects of the research are the students in English Department
of Jember University from 20112012 and 20122013 academic years. To analyze these problems, the tests and questionnaires are used to collect data and used to
find out the result of the problems.
1.4 The Goals of the Study
This research has several goals. They are: 1. to find out the frequency of the students in using and avoiding the different
types of phrasal verb literal and figurative. 2. to find which is the type of phrasal verb mostly avoided by the learners.
3. to find out what are the reasons of the learners avoid phrasal verbs. 4. to find out how the avoidance impact the learners in learning process.

1.5 The Significances of the Study
This study has several significances. They are: 1. this thesis can inform the reader about the description of the avoidance
strategy, particularly in avoidance of phrasal verbs in learning process and tell the readers why avoidance is used as strategy in learning process.
2. this thesis can serve as an additional reference to the learners and the teachers to find the solution of the problem of avoidance, especially for English
Department students.
