1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Wellek and Warren (1971 : 3) says, “Literature is the mirror of human life that portrays human feeling, thought, imagination and perception which can be viewed based on personal judgment”. In other word, literature constitutes the imaginative act from the human‟s imagination and interpreting life-experiences. Literature transforms and intensifies ordinary language, deviates systematically from everyday speech. Eagleton (1983 : 9) also says “Literature in the sense of a set of works of assured and unalterable value, distinguished by certain shared inherent properties, does not exist”.In other word, literature work has value of sense that can not be changed.
Based on excerpts of critics above can be concluded that literature can give us new ways of looking the world and finding significance which the daily use of language in its more commonplace way has concealed.
Novel is one of literary forms. Gray (1984 : 141) says, “Novels are long prose fictions, including every kind of plot, all style and manners of dealing with their material and showing a capability to cover every imaginable subject matter from all points of view”.In other word, a novel is a long prose fiction almost always concentrating on character and incident, and usually containing a plot. The intrinsic elements are truly seen from the novel. Novel has some intrinsic elements, such as theme, plot, character, setting, point of view and style.
(14)
Along with the development of internet technology, this causes to the rise of crime called Cybercrime. Cybercrime is criminal activity done using computers and the Internet which to take opportunities from the victims such as theft and use of an Internet account belonging to someone else, website hijacked, deception through social media accounts with a motive for kidnapping, rape and Murder and etc. The appearance of several cases of cybercrime that often happen and the existence of cybercrime has become a threat to internet users who are victims, not only in the material, but also their lives. This situation also present in the novel Wish List by John Locke. The Wish List is a website that is controlled by multiple agents where they were granted four wishes of an ordinary man named Buddy Pancake. When Buddy Pancake and his drinking friends stumbles across Website Wish List and they jokingly type their impossible wishes. Then, one by one of their wishes start coming true. But Buddy neglected to read the fine print explaining the price they must pay for the wishes they‟ve been granted. The result is they ask Buddy to perform criminal acts as a payment of four of his wishes.
To analyze the story, the writer uses „intrinsic approach‟. Wellek and Warren (1972 : 139) said that retrieve data only from the text, such as read the text carefully, sort information of plot, character, theme, background, action and make summary and conclusion. The writer also uses the library method as the method of study. Library method based on finding sources and appropriate information from the books or internet.
(15)
The writer interested to analysis this novel as subject of this paper because the story is about Website Wish List which can granted four wishes of their visitors but then asked to perform criminal acts as a payment of four of visitors‟ wishes. As the focus of this paper, the writer will analysis the Wish List Website and how this website give big affect to Buddy‟s fate.
1.2 Problem of Study
The problems of study are as follow:
1. What is Website Wish List?
2. Why did Wish List website give affect on Buddy Pancake‟s life?
1.3 Scope of Study
The writer will analyze through the element of the novel, such as plot, character, setting and theme to analyze the novel.
1.4 Purpose of Study
The purpose of writer in making this paper is :
The writer wants to find out why the Website Wish List works and operates in Buddy Pancake‟s life.
(16)
1.5 Method of Study
The writer uses the method of „library research‟ in writing this paper. The first stage is the writer reading the whole story in this novel to understand the story. After understand the whole story of the novel, the writer reading and search data in the library to get information about the plot. The second stage is to sort the data that has been collected. The final stage is to analyze such data. To analyze the story, the writer uses „intrinsic approach‟. Wellek and Warren (1972 : 139) said that retrieve data only from the text, such as read the text carefully, sort information of plot, character, theme, background, action and make summary and conclusion.
1.6 Reason for Choosing the Topic

2. REVIEW AND RELATED LITERATURE
2.1 Novel
Peck and Coyle (1984 : 102) say, “Novel reflects a move away from an essentially religious view of life towards a new interest in the complexities of everyday experience”. In other word, they say that most novel are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in the societies in which they find themselves. Peck and Coyle also say, “Most people are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in the societies in which they find themselves”. The novels are entertained and also give meaning messages to the readers. It also can impress the readers.
About twentieth-century novels, Peck and Coyle (1984: 123) also states “modern novelists can be divided into those who continue within a board tradition of realism and those who experiment far more with the form of the novel. They are less intrusive than nineteenth-century realists, presenting a credible picture in which we are not particularly aware of the narrator‟s presence. They deal with social, personal and ethical problems, and offer us an entertaining yet at the same time instructive look at how people cope with life in the twentieth century. “It means the novel is concerned with presenting the picture of how people related to society. Novel has many elements, which contain character, plot, theme, setting, point of view and style. These elements are related to each other and will construct a story in the novel.
(18)
2.2 Characters
Peck and Coyle (1986 :105) says, “The people in the novel are referred to as characters. We asses them on the basis of what author tell us about them and on the basis of what they do and say.” It means that character is also the personality which described by the actors or actress in a story. The characters in a story are the characters involved from the beginning until the end part of story. William Whitla (2010 : 160) says, “Character in the novel is conventionally discussed in terms of exposition and dialog. Characters can also be either flat or on-dimensional, having a simple function, or round, with complexity built up through multiple players of description and action.”
Based on the three excerpts above can be concluded that defines a character is a actors who hold events in the story so that is establish a narrative events. The character is the part of intrinsic element in the novel that is firstly explored by the writer because it takes essential role to display any behavior of each character in the novel.
2.3 Plot
Abrams (1981:137) says “Plot is series of stories which formed by stages of events to build a story that is presented by the actors in a story.” In other word, plot is a series of events that invented and built carefully, which move the plot through complexity towards the climax and resolution.
(19)
William Whitla (2010 : 43) says “In a narrative, information often answers the question, “What happened?” and the answer or themes, the arrangement of the action in a specific sequence of events, is called plot.” It means that plot is a literary term defined as the event that make up the story ,particularly as they relate to each other in a sequence, through cause and effect, how the reader views the story. According to Gray (1984 : 159), “Plot is the plan of literary work, especially of drama and novels. To reveal the plot of a novel involves something more than simply explaining the sequence of events.” In other word, plot suggests a pattern of relationship between events.
Based on the excerpts of critics above can be concluded that the plot serves as a guiding outline in developing the overall content of the story and also building and resolving the conflict is a primary focus of the plot.
2.4 Setting
William Whitla (2010 : 161) says, “setting means the location of narrative in time and space-in history or the particularities of place.” In simple terms, setting is the time, place and social reality within which a story takes place. Whitla also said that the location of narrative in time and space-in history can change quickly or slowly throughout a novel, as we shall see later. We have to understand where we are, in which period of time, in which society and at which level in that society if we are to interpret correctly the other elements in the story.
(20)
Based on the problems of study in this paper, the writer will analyze the novel enough through the three elements in novel such as character, plot and setting.
2.5 Intrinsic Approach
Wellek and Warren (1977:157) state the literature research starting from the interpretation and analysis of literary work itself. Modern literary history evolved shortly after the birth of romanticism movement. In the 19th century, literature research that was popular at the time is the research about explanations and origins of a literary work. The old methods such as classic rhetoric, poetical, and the dimensions must be learned again and re-elaborated in modern terms, while the new methods have been widely introduced.
In many countries there are also examples of intrinsic research. In France there is a method that is known with Explication de textes. There is also a formal analysis pioneered by Walzel that developed based on the alignment between the work of art and art history. In Czechoslovakia and Poland also have the Russian formalists. A literary critic and rethorican from England named I. A. Richard has more focused on the text of the poem. The analysis of the drama that aims to mix diffuse the drama with empirical reality, while the study of the novel look of artistic methods, perspectives and narrative techniques.
Based on the explanations above so that can be concluded that according to Wellek and Warren, intrinsic approach is the analysis that based of the text itself.
(21)
2.6 Descriptive Research
According to John W.Best (1977 : 42) , different from historical research that aim to describe the things that occurred in past, the purpose of descriptive research is to describe the things that happen in the present. In descriptive research be found the efforts of describe, recording, analysis, and interpretation of the conditions of ongoing or exist. In this descriptive research also contained different types of comparisons are possible through the effort to find the relationship between the variables with one condition that the variables do not undergo the process of manipulation as is done in experimental research.
(22)
3. THE ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF THE CUNNING WISH LIST IN BUDDY’S LIFE
3.1 Wish List
In this novel, the website Wish List is the main object in this story and also as the mover of story. Wish List is a website which wishes are typed by visitors will be collected, surveyed and gives an update list of the most popular wishes every day. Wish List is a website that was created by Hugo and Victor, billionaire little people who obsessed to conquer the world. Victor is the brains of the organization and also as financier there and Hugo is the general of their international army of little people. Wish List is a project of "social experiment" and another Victor‟s and Hugo's project. The latest project of Victor‟s and Hugo‟s social experiment few years ago was giving offers to people who have financial difficulties as much as one hundred thousand dollars if they agree to let them kill a villain who never want to pay for their crimes.
Considering the magnitude of evil, they've unleashed upon the world, Victor and Hugo have somehow to managed and without pardon theykeep operating in the criminal world. (Locke, 2011: 186)
In the excerpt above shown that in Victor‟s and Hugo‟s evil mind, they only think how to take advantages from their victims with all of their criminal actions. With all their experiences in criminal world, that is not difficult to trap people to willing do what their want. Their victims are only become display for them and take all their money is the main goal of their social experiment.
(23)
Behind of Wish List website there are agents who work to filter out the wishes that will be granted. Typically, Wish List will grant the request which sound unusual, has criminal actions and almost impossible to be granted.
When visitor wants to type their wishes on the Wish List page, there are some simple steps that should be through. Firstly, click the internet icon and wait for the welcome page. Next, type www.wishlist.bz in the address bar and wait for a moment to load. After that, the survey will appear and the visitor must type their email address there. Then, a small box fine print will appear. The fine print contains the approval where the life is guaranteed. After the visitor click „Agree‟ button in fine print, they can type their wishes there. Some of website Wish List‟s victims are those who neglect to read the contents of the box approval.
Through the analysis above can be concluded that the motive of Wish List is to make someone‟s life miserable and to control their life under them. Wish List never forces their victims to type their wishes because they always show the fine print contains the agreement before the victim type their wish. They can not do anything if the person reject to press the agree button on fine print. But, the victims are the one who careless and neglect to read the contents of fine print so that they are the one who enter and unfortunately trapped on Wish List operation.
(24)
3.2 Buddy Pancake
Buddy Pancake is typical American guy of a middle class who works as a loan officer in one of bank office in Louisville downtown. Because his last name is the same with the name of the type of cake, new people who know him would make jokes about his last name, but now he got used to it. With all his weakness, the one who can make him proud is only his wife, Melissa or he usually called her Lissie. According to Buddy, Lissie is very beautiful, nice and perfect for him. But although Buddy already had Lissie, in fact he often daydreaming about a movie star named Jinny Kidwell. Jinny is an ideal type of woman for Buddy.
There's no way he can hide his contempt. But I stand behind my belief that few men on earth would have turned down an afternoon delight with Jinny Kidwell, with or without the money (Locke, 2011: 81)
In excerpt above, Buddy thought every men would knelt down in front of Jinny Kidwell and can do anything to get along with her. He really admired on Jinny but he could not tell about his obsession on Jinny to his wife because that was only on his imagination. Due to his obsession with the movie star, sometimes under his conscious, Buddy often thought that Lissie was Jinny. Buddy ever caught calling Jinny name when he was with Lissie that made her suspicious and mad on him.
Despite his obsession with Jinny Kidwell so huge but Buddy is also a type of husband who really loves his wife. He always feels guilty after he realized had daydreaming about Lissie as Jinny. Sometimes he also feels like cheating on Lissie
(25)
Hugo asks “What‟s the most important thing in the world to you?” Then He sees my expression.“That‟s right, Buddy. We can do whatever we want to your precious Lissie. Anytime we want. And don‟t forget it.” (Locke, 2011 : 113)
Lissie is the biggest weakness and most important thing in the world to Buddy. He will do anything to protect Lissie from Wish List agent and does not want Lissie involved because of him. Buddy immediately accepted the offer from Wish List agents after they threatened to endanger Lissie‟s life if their demands were not granted. After escaping from the Wish List, Buddy also wanted to come clean and confess his sins to Lissie. And for the sake of his wife, Buddy disappeared from Lissie‟s life so Lissie no longer involved with Wish List agents.
Buddy‟s professional life is not that good.Buddy worked under the leadership of Mr. Oglethorpe which he is a boss who does not have a heart. He works always like a nightmare every time Mr. Oglethorpe treated him unfairly. Buddy always complain with the results that he got for not comparable to what he did.
"It's early March, and we're three underachievers, soft, wimpy, mind-management worker bee, sitting in the basement of my split-level ranch, in the room I like to call my office." (Lock, 2011: 9)
In this excerpt clearly seen that Buddy never satisfied with his job. He complained about his work office, his workmates who only can silent when they treated unfair by their boss and also because he always will be a worker bee for his boss, Mr. Oglethorpe. He wondered why his boss always treats him bad and also
(26)
threatened to fire Buddy every time like it is a joke for him. That reasons enough makes Buddy hates his boss so much.
Buddy is kind of spiteful guy. The cunning of Mr. Oglethorpe that Buddy hates the most is when his boss is always stealing the customers that have been painstakingly acquired by his employees. He will take over all the customers after his employees completing half of their work. His frustration reached the top when the day Mr. Oglethorpe gave command to Buddy to find customers who want the keep their money as much as three million dollars. Buddy assumes it is an oppression to him because his boss threatened to fire him from his job if he can not get the customer immediately.
Buddy has drinking friends name Mike and Richie. When they gather, they always talk about girls because Buddy‟s friends do not marry yet. Mike is so envy with him because the careless man like Buddy can marry a woman who is pretty and kind like Lissie. Buddy is a man who open and believe in his friends. It was shown when Buddy told only to Mike and Richie about his obsession with Jinny Kidwell.
From the analysis of character above can be concluded that Buddy is kind of careless guy who really love and care with his wife but also has obsesses with a movie star named Jinny Kidwell. He is the type who works half-hearted in his job just because he is really hates his boss. He was really proud when he succeed made his boss ashamed because of Buddy‟s arrogant attitude.
(27)
3.3 The Effect of Wish List in Buddy’s Life
Buddy with his two friends were drinking together and talking about women. Richie and Mike told to Buddy that they found a website called Wish List and they invited Buddy to participate in typing his wishes on Wish List page. Buddy initially did not believe what just his friends said and rejected to join with them because it sounds impossible, but he remembered his obsession with Jinny Kidwell that made him wondered and then began to consider his friends suggestion. In middle of the night, Buddy sneaked out from his room without the knowledge of his wife and quietly opened the Wish List website and typed his 4 wishes. Then, he typed his wishes quickly. First, he wanted to sleep with Jinny Kidwell. He thought this was the only chance for him to meet her if this Wish List was true. Then, he typed his second wish, that is a million dollar. He thinks money is never left when people want something to get. In his third wish, he wanted his boss died horrible death. After that, he paused and thought what should be he type on his fourth wish. He thought that the first three of his wishes does notmake a sense. Then he thought to put something plausible and decided to do something special for his wife, Lissie. Wish number four become to get two front row seats, Springsteen Concert, Louisville, Kentucky, Friday, March 12, 2010.
Buddy‟s boss, Mr. Oglethorpe gave command to Buddy to find customers who want to keep their money as much as three million dollarsand threatening Buddy fired from his job if he does not get a client. Buddy went to Tokyo Blue restaurant and
(28)
there he accidentally met a middle-aged woman named Mrs. Blankenship who was waiting for her granddaughter. Mrs. Blankenship told that she was looking for a loan from the bank for her granddaughter. Instantly, Buddy immediately volunteered to be a loan for Mrs. Blankenship‟s granddaughter. With a variety of considerations, finally Mrs. Blankenship accepted Buddy‟s offer.
Buddy‟s life slowly began showered by luck. Buddy and Chelsea, the granddaughter of Mrs. Blankenship began collaborating. In other place, Buddy's wife, Lissie, got a Springsteen concert tickets front row seats. These all successes made Buddy arrogant in front of Mr. Oglethorpe and his secretary, Hilda.
All afternoon I refuse to answer questions, saying only, "At nine o'clock tomorrow morning, you'll see. I'm going to own this bank. "(Locke, 2011: 42-43)
In this excerpt shown that Buddy was really proud because he could show and prove to his boss, Mr. Oglethorpe that he could finish his work really fast and made his boss irritated. He came late, did not give attention to his boss and played a loud song in his office room like he is the owner of the bank. Mr. Oglethorpe gave Buddy a warn but Buddy did not really care of it.
Mr. Oglethorpe did not approve Buddy‟s report about his new client and fired Buddy immediately. But not that long, a customer named Thomas Jefferson came. He was looking for Buddy because he want to save his money, a quarter of a billion dollars, if Buddy would be the one who handle it. Because of that, Buddy was not
(29)
Mr. Jefferson brought Buddy to Hannibal to take a million dollars for Buddy. Afterwards, he realized that Mr. Jefferson was part of the Wish List. They went to Riverview Park and took his money in the trailer. Mr. Jefferson said that to get a suitcase containing one million dollars, Buddy should sleep with Jinny Kidwell. In the trailer, Buddy met with Jinny who already knew the motive of Buddy‟s arrival because she also involved with Wish List. But she was reluctant to tell the real reason why Jinny willing to sleep with Buddy and just gave a little glimpse about Wish List.
Jinny says "I'll tell you this much: I've been given the opportunity of a lifetime, and it's good karma to give back. My wish was very important to me, and yours is very flattering. "(Locke, 2011: 69)
In this excerpt shown that Jinny Kidwell involved with Wish List because there is something important that related with her life. Because her status as a celebrity, she could not tell the detail of her intention with Wish List again because it can endanger her career. She said that Buddy‟s wish not that as important as her because his wish is kind of a joke while her wish is really important to her. She is willing to do everything for her wish and does not really care if karma will back to her.
After sleeping with Buddy, Jinny gave Buddy suitcase containing one million dollars. Buddy back to the limo and met again with Mr. Jefferson. In the way back home, Mr. Jefferson reminded Buddy about the Fine Print in Wish List website. Buddy did not know what the Fine Print that Mr. Jefferson was talking about. Mr.Jefferson explained that Fine Print contained the approval where the life is guaranteed. Buddy remembered on the night when he accessed the website Wish List,
(30)
he did been rushing and worried his wife night walk and caught him and neglected to read the Fine Print.
After parting with Mr. Jefferson, Buddy met with other strangers in limo named Rudy. Rudy began to instruct Buddy to pay all Buddy‟s wishes that he had received in accordance with the agreement in Fine Print. Buddy had to bury the bodies of his boss, Mr. Oglethorpe, according to Buddy third wish.
But I was just kidding around! I did not expect someone to actually kill my boss. (Locke, 2011 :84 )
Buddy did not expect his ridiculous wish wouldreally be granted. He thought Wish List was the one who killed his boss but Rudy said that Buddy killed his boss by his wish. Although Buddy hates his boss, but he did not really intend to make Mr. Oglethorpe die tragically, moreover the reason his boss was killed because of him.
