BIOGRAPHY OF WRITER

John Michael Green was born on August 24, 1977, to Mike and Sydney Green in Indianapolis. He received his early education from Lake Highland Preparatory School and Indian Springs School. His experience of school was similar to other social outcasts who get bullied by arrogant people. He earned double graduation degrees in English and Religious Studies from Kenyon College. He worked as a student chaplain after graduation in a children’s hospital.

John Green is the New York Times bestselling author of Looking for Alaska (2005), An Abundance of Katherines (2006), Paper Towns (2008), and The Fault in Our Stars (2012). He is also the coauthor, with David Levithan, of Will Grayson, Will Grayson. He was 2006 recipient of the Michael L. Printz Award, a 2009 Edgar Award winner, and has twice been a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Green’s books have been published in more than a dozen languages. John is also the cocreator (with his brother, Hank) of the popular video blog Brotherhood 2.0, which has been watched more than 30 million times by Nerdfighter fans all over the globe. John Green lives in Indianapolis, Indiana.

SYNOPSIS OF THE FAULT IN OUR STARS _NOVEL

Three months after getting first period at the age of thirteen years , Hazel Grace Lancaster diagnosed with thyroid cancer stage four. The disease metastasizes to the lungs and it makes her has pneumonia. In addition, she have to swallow Phalanxifor to slow the growth of cancer cells. Hazel must bring BiPAP ( bilevel Positive Airway Pressure ) everywhere to help with breathing .

At the instigation of his mother , Hazel came to the activities Support Group ( Support Group ) were held in the basement of the Episcopal Church. This support group is led by a testicle cancer survivors. There, Hazel met Augustus Waters, sexy boy seventeen years old, a former basketball player. Augustus or Gus joined support groups at the request of his friend, Isaac, who had cancer of the eye. Gus himself is a survivor -cancer osteosarcoma bone- which makes losing one leg having to be amputated.

Hazel had a different slant to Gus about life being lived. Gus lives in fear will be forgotten forever when he die. While Hazel did not really care . He has learned from the book An Imperial Affiction ( Misfortune Extraordinary ) written Peter Van Houten how to respond to a dying condition . For Hazel , death is a usual . " If you're worried forgotten forever by humans , I encourage you to ignore it . God knows , that's what all the other people . "

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents background of study, statement of the problems, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition key terms. They are presented consecutively in the following section.

1.1. Background of the Study

Kusnosoebroto (1988) states that literature is rooted in one of the most basic human desires, and men have taken pleasure in the imaginary adventures and experiences of imaginary people. It means that literature is a human expression which derives from their imagination. Literature can console people from imaginary adventures and experiences in the story. So, when people feel deeply enjoyable with the literature, they will get new insight and new experience indirectly from the story.

The majority of people more enjoy reading literature. Connolly (in Kusnosoebroto : 1988) explains that people read literature because they hunger for information, or amusement, or solace, and also because an appetite for truth that seen to grow by what it feeds on. Thus, it can be concluded that literature gives enjoyment and fun to readers and it gives some information in relation to daily life.

Novel is one of literary works which is interesting to read by people. Novel makes them never feel satisfied because of the embitterment with the next story when they red. It also has purpose for giving better understanding about human life and human feeling through the character’s personality in the story. In the story,

sometimes the author describes the character’s personality through their emotions that are faced in their life. So, by studying on emotion of the main character in the novel The Fault in Our Stars, people will know the emotion which shows when confront with a problem that happens and the way of expressing the emotional itself.

There are many problems that occur in life that elicit an emotion in people. An emotion of people will be unstable when they have a big problem in life. Sometimes they will be happy if there is something good happened or they will feel sad or angry if there is something bad happened. Even, sometimes people are very sensitive and easy being emotional. That emotion appears because they get trouble in their life. It may cause them getting difficulty to adapt with their situation. This can be the reason of people to show their expressing emotions. As the illustration above, the writer is interested in analyzing the emotions of the main character that found in the novel The Fault in Our Stars.

The Fault in Our Stars tells about teenager named Hazel Grace. She was diagnosed with stage four thyroid cancer. It is the disease of cancer that metastasizes to the lungs and pneumonia. Apart from having to swallow Phalanxifor to slow the growth of cancer cells, Hazel must bring BiPAP (Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure) to assist her breathing everywhere. So, it can be imagined how a young girl gets experience like the old people. Her condition made her emotions were unstable. Hazel shows variety emotions when face deplorable condition. The novel consists of experience, problems, and struggle related to human being behavior, love, survival,

and emotion. It gives the lesson about life. So, The Fault in Our Stars is the fabulous novel that suitable to read by all of people, especially teenager.

The previous research about emotion had been raised by Diharjo (2007) entitled An Analysis of Eddie’s Anger in Mitch Alboma’s novel “The Five People You Meet in Heaven”. He analyzed about the causes of anger, the ways to express, and the effects of anger. He found the causes of Eddie’s anger because Eddie tried to change his life to be better than before but he always failed to change. Eddie expresses by keeping silent and trying to forget his failure whole life with working. The effect of Eddie’s anger made him better than before. Based on the previous research, the writer is interested in analyzing all kind of emotions in the main character. So, this thesis is entitled An Analysis of Hazel’s Emotions in John Green’s Novel The Fault in Our Stars.

1.2. Statement of the Problems

In order to make the study clear, the writer needs to state of problems. Based on the research background, the writer formulates the problems as follows:

1. What are Hazel’s emotions in John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars?

2. How are Hazel’s emotions expressed in John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars?

1.3. Purpose of the Study

Based on the statement of problems above, this study has the purposes as follows:

1. To identify Hazel’s emotions in John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars

2. To describe the way Hazel expresses her emotions in John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars

1.4. Significance of the Study

The result of this study has significance for several. The first contribute for English Department Students. They can take the lesson about emotion, which can detect human personality. Furthermore, it gives motivation to the students in order to study novel as one of literary works which is a reflection of human life. The second contribution for lecturers. The lectures can use this study as reference when they teach psychological study, especially emotion and when they teach psycholinguistics. The last contribution for next researcher who is interested in analyzing novels. Hopefully, they get inspiration for analyzing novel by this study, especially about person’s emotion.

1.5. Scope and Limitation

This study, the writer focuses on the novel The Fault in Our Stars written by John Green and the writer focuses on Hazel as the main character in The Fault in Our

Stars novel. Meanwhile the limitation of this study are the writer focuses on emotions of Hazel when she faced her cancer and the way of she expressed her emotion.

1.6. Definition of Key Terms

The writer of this thesis describes definition of key terms that are used in the title. Key terms in the study are explained as follows:

1. Hazel is a young girl who born on September 29th 1995 and she was diagnosed with stage 4 thyroid cancer with metastasis forming in her lungs, but she has managed to live with her disease owing to doses of an experimental drug called Phalanxifor (wikia.com). Hazel is the main character in the novel that the writer wants to analyze.

2. Emotion is often associated with goal-directed behavior (Buck 1988 : 8). The kind of emotion such as anger, fear, sadness, etc.

3. John Green is a New York Times best selling author who has received numerous awards, including both the Printz Medal and a Printz Honor (Amazon.com). He is the writer of best seller novel that used as object by the writer.

4. Novel is now applied to a great variety of writings that have in common only the attribute of being extended works of fiction written in prose (Abrams. H. M : 2009) .

5. The Fault in Our Stars is the sixth novel by author John Green Novel, published in January 2012. The kind of the novel is fiction novel which story about a young girl diagnosed with stage 4 thyroid cancer.
