APPENDICES A.Biography of John Green

John Michael Green was born on August 24, 1977, to Mike and Sydney Green in Indianapolis. He had received his early education from Lake Highland Preparatory School and Indian Springs School. His experience of school was similar to other social outcasts who get bullied by arrogant people. He earned double graduation degrees in English and Religious Studies from Kenyon College. He had worked as a student chaplain after graduation in a children’s hospital. His initial aim was to become an Episcopal priest. However, the time he spent among children with terminal-illness stimulated him to become a writer.

Afterwards, he had worked as a publishing assistant for a book review journal. Green wrote numerous reviews on literary fictions mostly concerning conjoined twins or religion of Islam. While working as a critique he also began writing his debut Looking for Alaska. Eventually, his project completed and published by 2005. It is a coming-of-age romance novel about a teen Miles. The novel is inspired by Green’s time at Indian Springs. He

introduced more philosophical approach to the issues in a teenager’s life. The unorthodox form and content of the novel had earned the American Library Association’s Michael L. Printz Award in 2006. The book made a record staying at New York Times best seller list for the span of 7 years.

Subsequently, Green penned a second novel in 2006 titled, An Abundance of Katherines. It was another successful publication which was able to garner runner-up position for the Printz Award and Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist stand.

His next novel published in 2008, Paper Town, was also received with the same enthusiasm as its predecessors. There was a promise of a film adaptation of the book which he accepted. However, later Green had realized book’s worth and feared the movie’s failure to capture its essence would fail his dedicated readers. Thus, he pulled out of the adaptation contract.

Moreover, following the success of his literary work, Green quit his job at Booklist as a critique with intention of working as a professional writer. In November 2009, that book reached Number 10 on The New York Times Best Seller list for paperback children’s book.

After this, Green and his friend, young-adult writer David Levithan, collaborated on the novel Will Grayson, Will Grayson, which was published by Dutton in 2010. It was runner-up (Honor Book) for two of the annual ALA award, the Stonewall Book Award (for excellence in LGBT children’s and young adult literature), and the Odyssey for Excellence in Audiobook Production.

Green signed all 150,000 copies of the first printing and his wife and his brother applied their own symbols, a Yeti and a Anglerfish (known as the “Hanklerfish”), respectively. The New york Times Best Seller list for children’s books listed The Fault in Our Stars at number one for two weeks in January and February 2012. The novel has been made into a major motion picture of the same name, had released in the United States on June 6, 2014.

In late 2013, Green stated that he was writing a new book with the working title the Racket. He sold 5,000 words of a rough draft on Indie Go-Go for $10 in order to raise money as part of the Project for Awesome charity event. Green’s book reviews have appeared in The New York Times Book Review and Booklist, a wonderful book review journal where he worked as a publishing assistant and production editor while writing Looking for Alaska.

B.Summary of The Novel

The Fault in Our Stars was a novel by author John Green. The story follows the main character, Hazel Grace Lancaster, as she battles cancer. Not only was Hazel trying to live the normal life of a 16-year-old girl, but she was also struggling with what it will be like for her parents after she dies. While Hazel attends a church support group for cancer survivors,The leader of the support group was a cancer survivor named Patrick who constantly talks about the fact

(4)

that they meet in the heart of God since the group meets in the basement of a cross-shaped church, directly at the spot where God’s heart would be. Despite his surviving cancer, Hazel views his life as dreary. In the meeting, Hazel introduces herself. Despite his surviving cancer, Hazel had viewed his life as dreary. she had met a boy that is one year older than her, Augustus Waters. While Augustus had a type of cancer that causes him to lose his leg and wear a prosthetic, it also has a survival rate that was much higher than Hazel's death sentence.

From the first day that Hazel meets Augustus, the two were practically inseparable. The basis of their relationship ends up being Hazel's favorite book, An Imperial Affliction. She had required Augustus to read it and in turn, he had required her to read the book that is the basis of his favorite video game. Hazel relates to the character in her favorite book, Anna, because Anna has a rare blood cancer. Augustus and Hazel bond over the book because both of them of a burning desire to find out how the story ends because the author stops the book before providing conclusion on what happens to each of the characters.

A week later, Augustus reveals to Hazel that he has tracked down van Houten’s assistant, Lidewij, and through her, has managed to start e-mail correspondence with Van Houten. Hazel writes to Van Houten with the questions regarding the novel’s ambiguous ending and the fate of the mother of the protagonist, Anna. Van Houten eventually replies, explaining that he can only answer Hazel’s questions in person. Hazel had proposed the trip to her mother but is rejected due to financial and medical constraints. Later, at a Dutch-themed picnic, Augustus suprises Hazel with tickets to Amsterdam, attained through a

(5)

charitable foundation, she is thrilled, but when he touches her face she feel hesitant for some reason. Later, she had looked up Agustus’s ex-girlfriend, Caroline Mathers, who died of brain cancer. On Caroline’s memorial pag, a comment by Caroline’s friend causes Hazel to compares herself to a grenade: Hazel loves Augustus amd fears hurting him when she dies.

As she struggles with her love for Augustus and her death, Hazel suffers an episode of pleural effusion and is sent to the ICU, prompting her parents and her doctors to question the safety of overseas travel. The medical team argues againts the trip until Dr. Maria, one of the physicians most familiar with her case, convinces Hazel’s parents that Hazel must travel because she needs to live her live. When Hazel and Augustus first get to Amsterdam, they go to a restaurant and find that Van Houten paid for their meal and champagne. Augustus then confesses his love for Hazel that night. Hazel and Agustus finally meet Van Houten but are shocked to find that, instead of a prolific genius, he was a mean-spirited drunk. Horrified by Van Houten’s behavior, Lidewij had confessed to having arrange the meeting on his behalf, angering Van Houten, who proceeds to insult Hazel’s cancer and refuses to answer any of her questions. The two leave of the author in anger and dissapointment.

Accompanied by Lidewij, Hazel and Augustus visit the Anne Frank House. Hazel struggles to climb the many stairs and ladders leading up to the attic due to her lungs but by the end of the tour, Augustus and Hazel share a romantic kiss, followed by an applause from the other tourists in the attic. They return to hotel and have sex for the first time. The next day, Augustus confesses that a

(6)

recent PET scan revealed his cancer to have relapsed. Resolute, the two affirm their love and support for each other. Upon their return to Indianpolis, Augustus’s health significantly worsens. Augustus had ended up in the ICU for a few days. In his final days, Augustus had invited Isaac and Hazel to his pre-funeral, where they give eulogies.

Hazel quotes Van Houten about “larger and smaller infinities” reaffirms her love for him, and states that she would not trade their short time together for anything in the world. Augutus had died eight days later. At the funeral, Hazel had astonished to find Van Houten in attendance. He had explained that Augustus had maintained correspondence since Amstardam and that Augustus had demnaded he make up for ruining their trip by attending his funeral.

In a attempt for forgiveness, Van Houtentries to reveal the fate of Anna’s mother. Hazel, still upset with his behavior, asks him to leave.A few days later, while talking with Isaac, Hazel had learned that Augustus may have been writing a sequel to An Imperial Affliction for her. As Hazel searches for the pages, she again encounters a drunk Van Houten. He had confided in Hazel that his novel was a literary attempt to reconcile with the death of his daughter, Anna, who died from cancer when she was eight. Hazel tells Van Houten to sober up and write another book.

Eventually, Hazel learns that Augustus sent the pages to Van Houten because he wanted Van Houten to use the pages to compse a well-written eulogy about Hazel. Lidewij force Van Houten to read the pages and sends them to Hazel. Hazel reads Augutus’s word. He says getting hurt in this world is

(7)

inevitable, but we did get to choose who we had allowed to hurt us, and that he was happy with his choice. He hopes she likes her choice too. Hazel had stated and she does.

3. LOVEBETWEEN CANCER VICTIM 3.1 Love

Before the love is elaborated in the novel, I would like to investigate what the meaning of love is. What is a love? The term love cannot be separated from human life. Whatever, whoever he or she is,and no matter whether he or she is coming from high or low class of people, he or she would concern with love. Different people also define the term of love in a different definition. When two persons get to know each other well, they begin to understand one another better than ever before. They may love deeply for one another and each one cherishes and protects the other. The experience of these feelings is indication of love. Love is described as an abstraction found in every man and woman’s life. It cannot be separated from human life. Love has been old already and even historians do not know how long it will live.

The meaning of love is not strictly defined as passion of owning something completely. It is expressed and defined in a variety of ways. One form of these social interactions is the true existence of love. Love is a sort of glue to living persons that unite the knot of gap or difference. With love, human beings may unite the meaning of life in broadest meaning.

Love truly does not belong to an individual. It is shared in the nuance true meaning of life itself. Yet, what love may give is the same as what love may take. However, if the implication of love is wrongly interpreted will tend to destroy the good side of friendship an togetherness that human beings eternally dream for.

(10)

Of what love has positively given to be understood is the sense of attention. It is that becomes cornerstone of human beings relationship. Though great attention, the love has made men realize the feelings and symptoms of love socially and morally.

As what Goode (1977 : 378) confirms, “love is given great attention. In western sicieties and to some extent in other societies. People are socialized to believe that eventually they will fall in love. They are told that love is important. Love is universal human potential, but it is highly disruptive of exiting social arrangements.”

Love is inherent in all human cultures. It is precisely thesecultural differences that make any universal definition of love is difficult to establish. Expressions of love may include the love for a soul or mind, the love of laws and organizations, love for a body, love for nature, love for food, love for money, love for learning, love of power, love offame, love for respect of others, and etc.

Love is bigger than you are. You can invite love, but you cannot dictate how, when, and where the love expresses itself. You can choose to surrender to love, or not, but in the end, love strikes like lightening, unpredictable and irrefutable. You can even find yourself loving people you don't like at all. Love does not come with conditions, stipulations, addenda, or codes. Like the sun, love radiates independently of our fears and desires.

Love cannot be turned on as a reward. It cannot be turned off as a punishment. Only something else pretending to be love can be used as a lure, as a

(11)

hook, for bait and switch, imitated, insinuate, but the real deal can never be delivered if it doesn't spring freely from the heart.

Love cares what becomes of you because love knows that we are all interconnected. Love is inherently compassionate and empathic. Love knows that the "other" is also oneself. This is the true nature of love and love itself can not be manipulated or restrained. Love honors the sovereignty of each soul.

Love isauniversalwordthatis understoodthroughoutthe world, thatdescribes the feeling ofloveoraffectionfromone person to anotherorsomething, which isrealized or notrealized, makingthe person will givethe best thingfrom him or her toother peopleorsomething. There is avery strong feeling, itis normallydirected tothe opposite sex, whichit is from themindand heartasthe shadow oflover.

Loveissomethingthat bringsblindnessanddeafness, lovecan blindeverything exceptfora loved oneand that person can notseeanything. It is a

very nature exclusivething and not universal; it is also perhaps from the most deceptive form of love will be. Barnet (1982 : 258) says that Romantic love is changeless, faithfully, passionate and its sole end is to render the two lovers. So, happy the marriage is not the end but only the beginning of true happiness, cloudless, changeless to the end.

In other words,Loveis anormal thing, even teenagersoftenwonder whether he or she is normal.Lovealsoadds the happinessin human lifeand filledwithnuancesof emotionsandfeelings(hate, sadness, affection, miss, annoyed, etc.).EmotionalLovecontains elements oferoticism, whousuallywants toexpresshis lovebyholding hands, huggingetc. Meanwhilerationalloveis not dominated bya

3.2 The Journey of Love

Here, the writer will describe both the kind of love which are found in the aspects of the novel as theme, plot, setting and main characters.

One of the most important differences between a good novel and a great one is that, although both entertain us, the great novel goes further and makes us think deeply about serious aspects of life and health. It isnotonly designedto entertain us, buttomakeusfeelunderstoodthe importance ofthe love from someone who does not only make us happy but want to share in the joyful and sorrowful. It will be possible for the readers to read the viewpoint of fault in our stars without realizing that, in addition to demanding the story, interesting characters that are the main characters think about some important events that are always faced with cancer victims to always be grateful for what they have done for each day.

The theme of this novel is Romance experienced by two teenagers who are bothsuffering fromcancer victims. Two teenagers who have been cancer victims and falling in love with each other since the first meeting in the supporting group.

“I’m Hazel, I’d say when they’d get to me. Sixteen. Thyroid originally but with impressive and long-settled satellite colony in my lugs. And I’m doing okay.” (Green,2012:5)

Hazelhas been in with stage Ivdiagnosis of thyroid cancerandshould use a portableoxygen tanktobreathe properly. Like the other society in Unites States, the

(13)

people do not always care enough to the others , like a teenager who had adapted cancer named Hazel Grace. The appeared character was named Hazel Grace Lancaster. This name was the description that Hazel means “seed” for plant. It indicated a starting point for plant to grow. At her thirteen years old, she had been predicted to be died younger than her age. A conflict had been a stressful moment when someone faced options of the unwanted desires. As the way Hazel had faced for the cancer disease or to sustain a spirit of living by did not to be hopeless. Such a difficult and challenging situation, Hazel tried to stand alive that a hope was always available for any individu to live. It is a God’s concern of taking one’s life or giving him or her back to breathe.

“A boy was staring at me.”

“I was quite sure I’d seen him before. Long and leany muscular, he drawrfed the molded plastic elementary school chair he was sitting in. Mahogany hair, straight and short. He looked my age, maybe a year older, and he sat with his tailbone againts the edge of the chair, his posture aggressively poor, one hand half in a pocket of dark jeans.” (Green,2012:9)

Hazelmetwith aboynamed AugustusWaters who were suffered from osteosarcoma and resulted in one leg had to be amputated. After a few weeks, Hazel attended a meeting where she’s surprised by the presence of a new good boy who had stared directly at her. Augustus Waters, his body was tall and muscular with mahogany hair, but he had lost one of his leg. He survivored of ‘osteosarcoma.’

“I guess?”

“What’s your favourite?” “Um,” I said.”

“my favourite book, by a wide margin, was An Imperial Affliction, but didn’t like to tell people about it. Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become

(14)

conviced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book. And then are books like An Imperial Affliction, which you can’t tell people about, books so special and rare and yours that advertising your affection feels like a betrayal.” (Green,2012:33)

After supporting classes ended, Augustus made approaches to lend Hazela novel titled The Price of Dawn (Dawn reward), and Hazel recommended a novel titled AnImperial Affliction (Misfortune Extraordinary). After their starring contest had been overed, Augustus tried to talk with Hazel and the stuck on a long conversation at the group and Hazel started to like him. Hazel and Augutus agreed to read one of the other favorite books. Augustus lend Hazel a copy of The Price of Dawn, a book was based on his favorite video game. Hazel described her the strong feelings for An Imperial Affection.Hazel made a list of questions to be sent tothe assistant of Van Houten, Lidewij.

“He has an assistant,” Augustus said. “Lidewij Vligenthart. I found her. I emailed her. She gave him the email. He respounded her email account.”(Green,2012:67)

Aweek later, Augustus managed to send email, browsed email to Van Houten for Hazel.

“I wonder, though, if you would mind answering a couple question I have about what happens after the end of the novel. I undestand the book ends because Anna dies or becomes too ill to continue writing it, but I would really like to know what happens to Anna’s mom-whether she merried the Dutch Tulip Man, Whether she ever has another child, and whether she stays at 917 W. Temple, atc. Also, is the Dutch Tulip Man a fraud or does he really love them? What happens to Anna’s friend-particularly Claire and Jake? Do they stay together? And lastly-I realize that this is the kind of deep and thoughtful question you always hoped your readers would ask-what becomes of Sisyphus the Hamster? These questions have haunted me for years-and I don’t know how long I have left to get answers to them.” (Green,2012: 70)

(15)

Hazel summarized the plot of An Imperial Affliction. The narrator was a girl named Anna who developed blood cancer. Anna lived with her mother, a one-eyed tulip obsessed gardener, who had falled in love with a dubious, allegedly rich figure called The Dutch Tulip Man. As a reader, Hazel asked the man’s wealth and even his real nationality. Hazel admired Anna’s candid nature in the face of cancer.

“I know these are not important literary questions and that you book is full of important literary questions, but I would just really like to know. And of course, if you ever do decide to write anything else, even if you don’t want to publish it, I’d love to read it. Frankly, I’d read your grocery lists.” (Green,2012: 71)

She found it comforting that Anna comforted also, viewed herself as a side effect of the endless biological mutation that provided the planet with its abundant diversity of life. The only issue with the book was its lack of a conclusion. It ended midsentence without any character’s resolution. To make matters worse, Van Houten vanished mysteriously into obscurity after publishing the novel. So, Hazel told Augustus that he wanted to meet her favorite author because there are some questions she wanted to ask the author, VanHouten.

They were swooning over the same books and having phone calls into the hours of the night. At the arriving, Hazel started seeing the possibility of a lifewas more exciting than her cancer-ridden one and Augustus stared corresponding with Hazel’s favorite writer, it is something she had never been able to do, they get an invitation to go to Amsterdam and learn more about the ending of Hazel’s favorite book.

(16)

“I fear your faith has been misplaced-but then, faith ususally is. I can not answer your question, at least not in writing, because to write out such answers would constitute a sequel to An Imperial Affliction, which you might publish or otherwise share on the network that has replaced the brains of your generation. (Green,2012:77)

Finally, VanHouten answered, but he said he could not answer the question from Hazel personally in the email.

“Should you find yourself in Amsterdam, however, please do pay a visit at your leisure. I am usually home. I would even allow you a peek at my grocery lists. (Green,2012:78)

And if Hazel went to Amsterdam, he invited her to stop by at the house of Van Houten. But she could not because her mother did not have enough money to go to Amsterdam. Hazel told about the contents of the email replied on Augustus. And Augustus fulfilled his desire through an organization called the Peri Foundation. Its businesswas to realize the wishes of sufferer. August managed totrace the where abouts of VanHouten, the author from a book recommended byHazel, An Imperial Affliction(Misfortune Extraordinary).

“I woke up in the ICU. I could tell I was the ICU because I didn’t have my own room, and because there was so much beeping, and because I was alone. Dad told me that I did not have a brain tumor, but that my headache was caused by poor oxygenation, which was caused by my lungs swimming in fluid, a liter and a half (!!!) of which had been successfully drained from my chest, which was why I might feel a slight discomfort in my side.” (Green,2012:106-107)

Onthe way of their journey, there was something happened to Augustus and Hazel whereas suddenly got a serious case in his the lungs, had been filled with fluid and she was forced tobe takento the ICU.After Hazel had been recover from the illness, they continue their journey to Amsterdam.

(17)

“In the end we watched 300, a war movie about 300 Spartans who protect Sparta from an invading army of like a billion Persians.” (Green,2012:149)

On the plane, there were a lot of things done together between Hazel and Augustus. Beginto from watching a movie that they had never seen.

“I’m in love with you,he said quitely.” “Augustus, I said.”

“I am,he said. He was straring at me, and I could see the corners of his eyes crinkling. “I’m love with you, and I’m not in the business of denying my self the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and thatoblivion is invitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.” (Green,2012:153)

Until Augustus was telling his feeling to Hazel. Hazel got an experience, it was very interesting and unforgettable.

“Augustus,” I said again, not knowing what else to say. It felt like everthing was rising up in me, like I was drowning in this weirdly painful joy, but I couldn’t say it back. I couldn’t say anything back. I just looked at him and let him look at me until he nodded, lips pursed, and turned away, placing the side of his head againts the window.” (Green,2012:154)

And Hazel also expressed her feelings to Augustus because she also liked him. But she only could expressed the feelings in her heart.

“The land seemed sunk into the ocean, little rectangles of green surrounded on all sides by canals.” (Green,2012:155)

The plot of The fault in Our Stars is introducing the place. It was Indianapolis. Indianapolis was a small town in Unites States of America.

Finally, they were scheduled to meet with Van Houten in Amsterdam. Van Houten’s assistant name Lidewij was present during the meeting and admitted to having arranged anything. She thought it would be good for Van

(18)

Houten. He ridiculed Hazel’s belief that an author had special insight into his town characters. The scene came a halt when Van Houten accused Hazel of being dependet of people’s pity and a side effect of evolution.

“And we were kissing. My hand let go of the oxygen cart and I reached up for his neck, he pulled up me by my waist onto my tiptoes. As his parted lips me mine, I started to feel breathless in a new and fascinating way.” (Green,2012:203)

After the tour, Hazel and Augustus returned to Agustus’s hotel room. Hazel told him that she had loved him, and they made love for the first time.

“After a while, I pulled him over to the bed and we lay there together as he told me they’d strated palliative chemo.” (Green,2012:215)

It was not as Hazel expectedexactly, neither as painfl or as ecstatic, and they fall asleep together afterward, with Hazel’s head resting on Augutus’s chest.

The next morning, they came back at the hotel, Hazel could tell somethingthat there was something wrong and Augustus confessed that he was sick. He started to feel illness in his hip. Augustus broke the news to Hazel that he recently had a PET scan and his cancer had returned aggressively.

The news that Augustus’s cancer had returned and Hazel’s roles in their relationship. Augustus handled talking to the others about his cancer’s return in a few different ways. Initially he hide it from Hazel. He didn’t fully explain why, but he hinted that it was because he didn’t want her to look at him differently. After he told her, however, the love he felt over how to act in front of her becomes clear. Hazel described him breaking down and soobing just after he had told her, but almost immediately he composed himself and told Hazel he would fight the cancer.

(19)

Augustus arrived at home from the hospital a few days after the episode at the gas station. Hazel had got a call from Augustus, he asked her to prepare a eulogy for his pre-funeral. All she wanted to do had been there for him, and watching him dietook up her whole life. When Augustus died, it was unimaginably hard.

“Augustus Waters died eight days after his prefuneral, at Memorial, in the ICU, when the cancer, which was made of him, finally stopped his heart, which was also made of him.” (Green,2012:261) From all the descriptions above, the writer can conclude that this novel The Fault in Our Stars is its testing-love for the characters and story. So, the effectsof love can be felt by the characters.

a. Hazel Grace Lancaster, Augustus Waters, Isaac, Kaitlyn, Monica, with the minor Characters.

b. Peter Van Houten , Lidewij Vliegenthart , those are The infamous author of An Imperial Affliction and Peter Van Houten’s assistant. c. Mrs. Lancaster and Mr. Lancaster, those are Hazel’s mother and

(20)

In order to know and understand more detail about love also find through the main characters used by John Green in the novel The Fault in Our Stars.

1. Hazel Grace Lancaster

Hazel Grace Lancaster was one of John's’ most sympathetically drawn characters. Hazel was 16-year-old protagonist, an astute and remarkably conscientious girl, Hazel had been diagnosed at age thirteen with a terminal form of thyroid cancer at has spreaded to her lungs. She keeps a distance to most of people for knowing her death would ultimately hurt them. She is—conscientious speaking—old for her age, as we see when she's contrasted with her friend Kaitlyn. By comparison, Hazel is far more thoughtful and considerate about her actions than Kaitlyn, and she is far more analytical. One of Hazel’s defining characteristics is her wish to tread lightly upon the world. She desperately wants to mitigate the harm caused by her existence on Earth.

Hazel’s transcendent journey throughout the novel is truly multifaceted. Physically speaking, we witness Hazel grow weaker. This change is apparent in the fact that she uses the stairs at Support Group at the beginning of the novel and opts for the elevator near the novels end, as her physical condition deteriorates. The more nuanced aspect of Hazel’s journey revolves around her spiritual and philosophical understanding of death. At the beginning of the novel, Hazel obsesses over the impact her death will have on those around her. She fears getting close to anyone because she knows that her death, which isn't far off, will hurt anyone close to her. It makes her, as she puts it, a “grenade.” This fear appears most in regard to her mother. Once, when Hazel was near dying, she

(21)

overheard her mother saying if Hazel dies she won't be a mother anymore, and that thought has stayed with Hazel. This fear motivates Hazel's mission to determine what happens to the characters at the end of An Imperial Affliction. She needs to affirm that everything turns out alright for Anna’s mother, so that she can convince herself that her parents will end up alright.

Through her relationship with Augustus, however, Hazel's perspective changes. When his cancer reappears, she recognizes that, of the two of them, he is now the grenade. But even so, she isn't sorry she fell in love with him, even though it will hurt her immensely when he dies. Instead, she cherishes and feels extremely grateful for the time they do have together. The final words of the novel indicate the extent to which Hazel grows spiritually throughout her journey. The implication of the words “I do” are of a marriage that takes place through memory. Though the marriage is symbolic, it is nevertheless real. What Hazel means by saying “I do” is that she will remember and love Augustus for as long as she lives, and in that sense she has learned that death is not the ubiquitous finality she had once considered it to be. Our relationships continue, even if we do not.

2. Augustus Waters

The sixteen-year-old with osteosarcoma who becomes Hazel's boyfriend. Augustus has a keen wit and a tendency toward performance—he revels in grand romantic gestures. Augustus almost immediately falls in love with Hazel after meeting her at Support Group. Augustus plays a strong, confident, funny, and charming boy. He continuously fetishizes his own grandiosity. He is convinced

(22)

that the importance of life is being heroic, leaving a noble legacy, monumentally impacting humanity. He is deluded by showy metaphors of his own construction, like when he sacrifices himself in a video game by jumping on a grenade in order to save children. Gus, a teenage boy in Indianapolis who used to be a star athlete and now finds himself dying from cancer. Gus is a sweet, caring, and understandably terrified seventeen-year-old guy.As he deteriorates physically, he's forced to confront the fact that he'll die without doing anything humanity at large views as extraordinary, and a deeper spiritual transition takes place.

3. Isaac

4.2 Suggestion

One person's death doesn't consign their significance and relationships to oblivion, and that what makes our lives matter are the relationships we form. Love implies the life of a work to be studied and description.

After description The fault in Our Stars, I would hope this paper description may encourage students of literature to look closely at novel in general that the reader can understand the story of the love in a literary work. This paper can be used as a starting point to look.

Finally, I hope the description of this paper may at least add the vocabulary of literary study in which may be useful for students of literature later on. That is why, this paper is opened for further study in its weakness. However, the description is offered has given the nation a better thing to do than nothing.

2. THE REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Novel

Novel is one of various literary works as a part of prose fiction. As a prose fiction, a novel describes some various matters about human experinces, characters and events. As Taylor, ( 1981 : 46) states that a prose works of quite some length and complexity which attempts to reflect and express something of the quality or value of human or conduct.

Novel is one genre of literature besides poetry and drama. Each of them has very much in common though theoretically is different from the form. Nurgiyantoro (2005:11) says, “Novel can freely express something, to present something more detail and more involving many complex problems. This includes various the story elements that build the novel.” Based on the statements, novel is created by the author who imitated the real world which is combined with the imagination. By reading novel, people can get pleasure and also much understanding about human characters. As a part of literature, novel gives us the knowledge which rich psychological aspect as it can be seen through the characters.

Novel is one of many possible prose narrative forms. Richard Gill in this book ( 1985 : 78) says that in the writing, there is a recognition that a novel is something specially made by an author so that the readers will respond it in a particular way. The good candidate has recognized three things about a novel: the events of novel, the author who creates it, and the readers to whom the novel is written.

(29)

Shaw (1972:189) says, “Novel is a lengthy fictitious prose narrative portraying character and presenting an organized series of events and settings.”

According to Wellek & Warren (1989:282) say, “The novel is a picture of real life and manners, and of the time in which it is written. The romance, in lofty and elevated language, describes what has never happened nor is likely to happen.” This statement shows that novel is realistic, while the romance ispoetic or epic. Novel is growing from the forms of narrative nonfiction; letters, journals, memoirs or biographies, chronicles or history. In other words the developing novel is from any documents.

2.2 Character

Characters, according Edgar (1987) says that a character may be defined as a verbal representation of a human being. Through action, speech, description, and commentary, author sport rab characters that are worth caring about, rooting for, and even love, although there are also characters you may laugh, dislike, or even hate.

Develop the story was not separated from the freedom of creativity. Fiction offers the life model which attitudes and experienced by the characters of story according to how the author in looking life itself. Because the author is deliberately created the world in fiction, he has the complete freedom to display the characters according to his taste, whoever the person, whatever his social status, however his attitude and whatever the problems faced.

(30)

2.3 Plot

Plot is basically sequences of events in logical and chronological relations which are interrelated, caused or experienced by the characters. The plot outline is divided into three parts, namely early, middle, and end. The first part contains the exposition that contains instability and conflicts. The middle part contains the climax which is the heigh of the conflict. The final section contains troubleshooting.

Stanton (2007:26-29) states that plot is a series of the events in a story. A certain event affects another event causally. Cause and effect happens to an event that results conflict. For instance, an act of stealing affects the owner and tries to catch the thief for prison. That event results the cause in terms of conflict. Thus the event will be affecting for all the story. Plot is very close to the existence of the character. If the story only has a little in character, there will be more close and simple to plot, in contrast a novel that has many characters in the story the plot will be more complicated. Plot also helps the reader easier in understanding the story. Usually a good or popular novel uses simple plot, so the strength of the novel also depends on the plot.

2.4 Setting

Setting is the foundation that leads to understanding the place, time relations, and social environment where the occurrence of the events described. In fiction, the background can be divided into three kinds, namely the setting place, time, and social. The setting of place is related to geographical problems, the

(31)

location where the incident occurred, in what village, what city, and so forth. The setting of time is related to matter of time, days, hours, and historical.

Wiyatmi (2008:40) says that the setting of social is related to people’s lives A story requires clarity about where the accident occurred and when it happens to easy imagination and understanding. That means that a story requires the setting of places, the setting of time and the setting of social-cultural where the story took place.

Gill (1985:106) says that the setting is a broad word. It covers the places in which characters are presented; the social context of characters, such as their families, friends and class; the customs, beliefs and rules of behavior of their society; the scenes that are the background or the situation for the events of the novel; and the total atmosphere, mood or feel that id created by these. All of them are examples of setting. When we study a novel, we should pay attention to setting, because it can make a contribution to the book. A successful setting is one which is appropriate to the section of the novel in which it appears and also, possibly, to the book as whole.

1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 The Background of Study

Art and literature have the strong relation, those are two great things. Literature is the art of telling story to someone, either orally or written. By reading literary works, you can read the art of language it’s a beautiful thing if you can recognize such things when you read the works.Literature can be considered as a written imagination of what human thinking, it reflects the result as the value ofan art work. Taylor (1981:1) says that literature, like other arts, is essentially animaginative act, thatis, an act of the writer’s imagination in selecting, ordering, and interpreting human life.

Irrespective of what literature is, Roberts and Jacobs (1993:1) say, “Literature refers to compositions that tell stories, dramatized situations, express emotions, and analyze and advocate ideas.”This definition gives clue that literature offers ideas which are inherent in literature. They can be studied of course in order to find the truth of what is going on in literature. Character is a person who is responsible for the thoughts and actions within a story, poem, or other literature. Characters are extremely important because they are the medium through which a reader interacts with a piece of literature. Novel is one genre of literature besides poetry and drama. Each of them has very much in common though theoretically is different from the form.

According Nurgiyantoro (1998:4) “novel sebagai sebuah karya fiksi menawarkan sebuah dunia, dunia yang berisi model kehidupan yang diidealkan, dunia imajinatif, yangdibangun melalui berbagai unsur intrinsiknya seperti

(33)

peristiwa, plot, tokoh, (dan penokohan), latar, sudut pandang, yangkesemuanyabersifatimajinatif.”

It means that a novel is fiction or narrative fiction that offers a world of imaginative one. Which was built through a variety of the intrinsic elements such as events, plot, character, (and characterization), setting, point of view, all of which are imaginative.

Any talk about love never comes toan end since it is so complex and unique that no one has the same ability in defining it and no one has the same opinion or concept when they are talking about it. Love, likeother emotionsaredesire, images, andideasorganizedaround an object.

Love has unlimited power and plays an important role in human’s life. Love does not need the formula of scientific studies. It is needed understanding, honor, respect and tolerance. The term love is also applied to the state of feeling and love is also a part human life. Love makes life sweeter, stronger, and moremeaningful. All of us have had love since we are young and will have it till someday we leave the world also we experience love from our earliest moment.

One, who is in love, will do anythingto satisfy his or her lover Collins (1987:865) says, “If you are someone, you have a very strong feeling of affection towards them and feel romantically attracted to them and they are very important to you. You feel their happiness is very important to you and usually tell the feeling in the way you have to towards them.”
