Conference on ELT (English Language Teaching) Current Issues
Tanggal: 2011-05-10

Teaching staff of Language Center (LC) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) attended One-day
Conference on Current Issues on ELT Research and Pedagogy held in State University of Malang on Saturday, May 7,
2011. The conference invited keynote speaker Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono, Ph.D, and 14 presenters from Graduate
program of English Language Education, State University of Malang.
At 8 a.m, Prof. Cahyono began the conference by quick introduction about current issues which are recently
published in conference papers (proceedings), reports, and articles. The issues, which seem to be “always in” ELT,
covered methodology, ICT, professional development, EYL, and teaching language skills. The keynote speaker
recommended that language teachers be more encouraged to conduct research as well as update their knowledge
regarding current issues. Keeping up-to-date to issues in language research and pedagogy helped improve and
contribute to the development of English teaching. Further, the 14 other speakers, in turn, presented current topics,
namely critical thinking stages in reading and writing, professional development of EFL and EYL teachers, language
assessment and its potential wash-back, pragmatic competence, mind mapping for writing, genre-based approach, and
character building in TEFL. Every session of the presentation offered courageous chances for participants to ask and
share ideas on the real practice of English teaching in various contexts and environments.

Sending LC teaching staff to a conference outside UMM, according to Director of LC, Ms. Dwi Poedjiastutie,
M.A., constitutes one of staff development programs designed by LC to better equip teaching staff with broader
perspectives on conducting quality English teaching.
