CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter conveys two different sections: conclusions and suggestions. In conclusions, two points are concluded from the results based on the objectives of this research. In suggestions, some suggestions are given to some parties related to the results.

A. Conclusions

Based on the findings and discussions in Chapter IV, some conclusions can be formulated as follows. 1. The first objective of this research is to identify and to describe the types of interruptions presented in the TV series Modern Family Season 1. All the four types of interruptions that consist of simple, overlap, butting-in, and silent interruption appear in the series. The highest frequency of the types of interruptions is simple interruption. Simple interruption appears 34 times out of 57 total data 59.65. The lowest frequency is obtained by butting-in interruption with 2 data 3.51. The simple interruption becomes the mostly used interruptions, because the main background in Modern Family is family. Interruptions often occur in an informal setting between people who have a close relationship. They can without doubt interrupt another person, especially to people who are younger than them. After being interrupted, the interruptee stops hisher words immediately because heshe wants to give a change to the interrupter. The interruptee stays silent to know why the interrupter cuts his her speech. In addition, simple interruption has the easiest pattern compared to other types. The lowest frequency of the types of interruption is butting-in interruption. Butting-in interruption has the fewest number because the interruptee usually lets the interrupter talk after interruption occurs. However, in this type, the interruptee keeps talking and ignoring the occurrence of interruption. Therefore, this type is in the last rank because in a family, the interruptee respects the interrupter’s opinion by listening to himher instead of disregarding himher. 2. The second objective of this research is to describe the functions of interruption presented in Modern Family Season 1 series. There are three functions that appear in the series: cooperative, intrusive, and neutral. Cooperative interruption is divided into three subcategories: agreement, assistance, and clarification, while intrusive interruption consists of four subcategories: disagreement, floor taking, topic change, and tangentialization. Disagreement gets the biggest percentage with 35.09 and appears 20 times. The last function is clarification with only 1 occurrence 1.76. The disagreement underlies the most choice of interruptions presented in Modern Family Season 1 because people who do interruption usually want to show their disagreement, rejection, or contradiction. This series presents many characters with various personalities, so having different opinions is possible during conversations. In contrast, the last function, clarification, shows positive interruption. Because each member of family has been together for a long time, they understand each other well. When a member talks, the hearer can relate to the speech easily. Therefore, rarely do they misunderstand other member’s intention within hisher utterance.

B. Suggestions
