CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
In this chapter, the writer will explain about background of the study,
statement of problem, purposes of the study, significance of the study, scope and
limitation, and definition of key terms.

1.1 Background of the Study
Literature is a writing which expresses life in words. It contains about
story experience which is created and consumed by human being. According to
Suatmo (1994: 3), “Literature is the expression of beautiful thought and ideas in
beautiful language.” It means that, literature is the product of human thinking and
also the ideas which is expressed in beautiful language.
By studying literature people will get knowledge about others experience and life
expression without experiencing in themselves. In other words, people can feel as
if they were in that situation and enjoy for them. In addition, people can get some
new knowledge, experience, pleasure, happiness and even sadness.
There are several parts of literature, such as prose, poetry, and drama.
Poetry is one of literary works. There are three categories of poetry, those are
narrative, descriptive, and lyric poetry (Waluyo, 2003: 1). In lyrical poetry, the
poet expresses his individual feeling and emotion. A lyrical poetry has close
relationship with song because commonly song includes lyrics. Lyrics contain of

several meanings and messages that can be taken from it. The beauty of song
depends on the lyrics itself. Lyrics tell everything and usually it has relationship
with our life.

1

According to Macmillan (1984), “Poetry is the most concentrated from of
literature.” Poetry is type of literature with simple language, shortened, and added
by rhythm and sound and figurative language (Waluyo, 2003: 1).
From that statement, we know that poetry relates to literature significantly. Poetry
is a part of literature and it can not be separated each other. It has simple language
and shortened. Also, it is completed with rhythm, sound, and figurative language.
If we understand about literature we also have to master poetry very well so we
will be easy to analyze the song. Since, song belongs to poetry, we have to know
the knowledge of poetry before analyzing song deeper.
Song is one of literary works that has purpose to entertain and to give
information. According to Hornby (1969: 822), “Song is a short poem or other set
of words, set to music or meant to be sung.” In other words, song is a poem which
is not too long and it is completed with music to compose a song and it is sung to
deliver the meaning. Anyone who listens to song will know that it has the power
to transmit the ideas of emotions or feelings. Because words have sounds, they
can be combined to create a song. The poet chooses the words not only to
communicate ideas but also the distinct sounds. To understand about song, we
need to read because this is an important thing to comprehend the meaning of the
song in context. Most of us like singing but sometimes we do not understand the
meaning of the song and also the meaning which covers on the lyric. Sometimes,
we just enjoy the song from the music not the lyrics.
Some previous researchers have studied about song. In this research, the
researcher provides two research findings. The first is from Riswanto (2008) who
studied on the message of the song lyrics Still loving you by Scorpions. He found

2

that the message of Still loving you was true love. If we did not only have each
other we had to be ready to face anything that became falling in his love. He also
found that the song told about somebody who loved so much to a girl but the girl
that he loved went away from his life, he did many things to make his love back,
he always tried to be honest and forced many effort to reach it back because only
it that he could do to express his love. In his research he used an objective
approach to observe the content of its song with emphasize on the messages and
much concern with its object (song lyric). This research is really helpful for the
researcher because the concern of the discussion is same. It is about analyzing the
meaning of song. Even though, the researcher wants to analyze the song from a
singer not from a band, she wants to use the same approach with Riswanto to
analyze the different song.
The second is Ibadillah (2004). He also analyzed message of the song Hey
Jude by Beatles and it is about mother`s love. We are as children should respect to
our parents and share any kinds of problems with them. Ibadillah found that the
poet wanted to deliver his concern to Julian condition because of divorce, to show
the children about the description of life challenge and face the life. He used
expressive approach to try finding out the messages of the poem both detail and
general by approaching the biography of the poet. Analyzing the content of the
poem based on the feeling and expression of the poet. That’s way it can be used as
references for researcher to analyze the song.
From those research findings, the researcher conducts a research about
song. The researcher chooses Laura Pausini`s song for this study because this
song has predictable theme even we just listen to it without knowing the lyrics.

3

Other reasons are because this song tells about more than one theme; about love,
effort, and also a great faithful. It is what makes this song interesting to be
analyzed. It is different from other songs which usually tell about one theme only.
Beside that, this song belongs to the first English album of Laura Pausini and
become popular song until now.
In this case, the researcher aims to find the detailed, general meaning of Laura
Pausini`s song and the message behind the song. This study also focuses on the
It’s not good bye lyric takes from Laura Pausini`s album From The Inside by
using an objective approach to find the meaning and messages based on the lyrics
and not the author`s life.

1.2 Statement of Problems
Based on background of study above the researcher of this thesis
formulates the following problems:
1. What are the detailed meaning of It`s not good bye song?
2. What are the general meaning of It`s not good bye song?
3. What are the messages found in It`s not good bye song?

1.3 Purposes of the Study
Based on the research questions above, the purpose of study are:
1. To describe the detailed meaning of It`s not good bye song.
2. To describe the general meaning of It`s not good bye song.
3. To find out the messages which are found in It`s not good bye song.

4

1.4 Significance of the Study
From this study the researcher hopes that it can help students, especially
students of English department, be more interested in literary works especially
poetry (song lyric). By reading this research the students will know and more
understand what literary work is and how to analyze it. Besides students, the
writer hopes that this study can give contribution to the English teachers who are
concern with teaching literature. It is as additional information for them to teach
literature especially about poetry to their students. And the rest is for the next
researcher who wants to analyze about literature especially song lyric so that this
study can be used for a reference or previous research.

1.5 Scope and Limitation
The study is analyzing song lyric by Laura Pausini. There are many topics
that can be analyzed in this song, but in this study the writer scope on the detailed,
general meaning, and message of it. And for the limitation is It’s not good bye
song.

1.6 Definition of Key Terms
- Meaning in this research is defined as the poet intention which is expressed in
the lyrics of the song.
- Song is set of lyrics composition which is completed with music and intended to
be sung.
- Lyrics is set of words in a song which consist of beautiful language and express
individual feeling.
