A. The Biography of Robert Galbraith or J.K. Rowling.

Robert Galbraith is a pseudonym for J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series and The Casual Vacancy. Joanne "Jo" Rowlingborn 31 July 1965),pen names J. K. Rowling and Robert Galbraith, is a British novelist best known the author of the Harry Potter fantasy series. The books have gained worldwide attention, won multiple awards, and sold more than 400 million copies. They have become the best-selling book series in history and been the basis for a series of films which is the second ashighest-grossing film series in history. Rowling had overall approval on the scripts and maintained creative control by serving as a producer on the final instalment. Born in Yate, Gloucestershire, Rowling was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International when she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series on a delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990. The seven-year period that followed

(2)

saw the death of her mother, divorce from her first husband and relative poverty until Rowling finished the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the

Philosopher's Stone in 1997. There were six sequels, the last, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007. Since then, Rowling has written three books for

adult readers, The Casual Vacancy (2012) and—under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith—the crime fiction novels The Cuckoo's Calling (2013) and The

Silkworm (2014).

Rowling has led a "rags to riches" life story, in which she progressed from living on state benefits to multi-millionaire status within five years. She is the United Kingdom's best-selling living author, with sales in excess of £238m. The 2008 Sunday Times Rich List estimated Rowling's fortune at £560 million, ranking her as the twelfth richest woman in the United Kingdom.Forbes ranked Rowling as the forty-eighth most powerful celebrity of 2007, and Time magazine named her as a runner-up for its 2007 Person of the Year, noting the social, moral, and political inspiration she has given her fans. In October 2010, Rowling was named the "Most Influential Woman in Britain" by leading magazine editors. She has supported charities including Comic Relief, One Parent Families, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Great Britain and Lumos (formerly the Children's High Level Group), and in politics supports the Labour Party and Better Together.

Cormoran Strike

Over the years, Rowling often spoke of writing a crime novel. In 2007, during the Edinburgh Book Festival, author Ian Rankin claimed that his wife spotted Rowling "scribbling away" at a detective novel in a café. Rankin later

(3)

retracted the story, claiming it was a joke, but the rumour persisted, with a report in 2012 in The Guardian speculating that Rowling's next book would be a crime novel. In an interview with Stephen Fry in 2005, Rowling claimed that she would much prefer to write any subsequent books under a pseudonym, but she conceded to Jeremy Paxman in 2003 that if she did, the press would probably "find out in seconds".

In April 2013, Little Brown published The Cuckoo's Calling, the purported début novel of author Robert Galbraith, who the publisher described as "a former plainclothes Royal Military Police investigator who had left in 2003 to work in the civilian security industry". The novel, a detective story in which private investigator Cormoran Strike unravels the supposed suicide of a supermodel, sold 1500 copies in hardback (although the matter was not resolved as of 21 July 2013, later reports stated that this number is the number of copies that were printed for the first run, while the sales total was closer to 500), and received acclaim from other crime writers and critics—a Publishers Weekly review called the book a "stellar debut", while the Library Journal 's mystery section pronounced the novel "the debut of the month".

India Knight, a novelist and columnist for the Sunday Times, tweeted on 9 July 2013 that she had been reading The Cuckoo's Calling and thought it was good for a début novel. In response, a tweeter called Jude Callegari said that the author was "Rowling". Knight queried this but got no further reply. Knight notified Richard Brooks, arts editor of the Sunday Times, who began his own investigation. After discovering that Rowling and Galbraith had the same agent

(4)

and editor, he sent the books for linguistic analysis which found similarities, and subsequently contacted Rowling's agent who confirmed it was Rowling's pseudonym. Within days of Rowling being revealed as the author, sales of the book rose by 4000 percent, and Little Brown printed another 140,000 copies to meet the increase in demand. As of 18 June 2013, a signed copy of the first edition sold for US$4,453 (£2,950), while an unsold signed first-edition copy was being offered for $6,188 (£3,950).

Rowling said that she had enjoyed working under a pseudonym. On her Robert Galbraith website, Rowling explained that she took the name from one of her personal heroes, Robert Kennedy, and a childhood fantasy name she had invented for herself, Ella Galbraith.

Soon after the revelation, Brooks pondered whether Jude Callegari could have been Rowling as part of wider speculation that the entire affair had been a publicity stunt. Some also noted that many of the writers who had initially praised the book, such as Alex Bray or Val McDermid, were within Rowling's circle of acquaintances; both vociferously denied any foreknowledge of Rowling's authorship. Judith "Jude" Callegari was the best friend of the wife of Chris Gossage, a partner within Russells Solicitors, Rowling's legal representatives. Rowling released a statement saying she was disappointed and angry; Russells apologised for the leak, confirming it was not part of a marketing stunt and that "the disclosure was made in confidence to someone he [Gossage] trusted implicitly". Russells made a donation to the Soldiers' Charity on Rowling's behalf and reimbursed her for her legal fees. On 26 November 2013 the Solicitors

(5)

Regulation Authority (SRA) issued Gossage a written rebuke and £1000 fine for breaching privacy rules.

On 17 February 2014, Rowling announced that the second Cormoran

Strike novel, named The Silkworm, would be released in June 2014. It sees Strike

investigating the disappearance of a writer hated by many of his old friends for insulting them in his new novel.

In 2015, Rowling stated on Galbraith's website that the third Cormoran

Strike novel would include "an insane amount of planning, the most I have done

for any book I have written so far. I have colour-coded spreadsheets so I can keep a track of where I am going." On 24 April 2015, Rowling announced that work on the third book was completed. Titled Career of Evil, the novel will be released on 20 October 2015 in the United States, and on 22 October 2015 in the United Kingdom.

3. THE ANALYSIS

The novel The Cuckoo's Calling is one of the detective novels that reveal about the murder case of a supermodel named Lula Landry. Cormoran Strike is a detective hired by Lula’s adopted brother named John Bristow. In this case, Lula declare that she hascommitted suicide but John Bristow do not believe it. That thing makesJohn to hire a detective to reveal the murder case of his sister, Lula.

Lula’s fall from the balcony of Lula’s flat. It can be seen from the following quotation:

“Photographers stood massed behind barriers patrolled by policy, thier long-snouted cameras poisod. The entrance to the tall red-brick apartment bloch behind it, and the balcony on the top floor from which the body had fallen.” (Galbraith: 2013;3)

The explanation of the quotation above is the photographers crowding around the apartment building with balcony on the highest floor where there is a body of a supermodel who falls from it.

News about Lula who death because she falls from the balcony. It can be seen from the following quotation:

“The story forced news of politics, wars and disasters aside, and ever version of it sparkled with pictures of the dead woman’s flawless face, her lithe and sculpted body.” (Galbraith: 2013;6)

The explanation of the quotation above is news of the fall of the supermodel had defeated news about politics war, and disaster.

The fall of the supermodel is declared to have been committing suicide by police but her adoptive brother John Bristow is convinced that his sister was killed and then he hired a detective. It can be seen from the following quotation:

(10)

“Five minutes later was a knock on the door and Strike, who had been on the verge of sleep, jerked upright in his chair. “Sorry?” “Yeah?” “There’s a client here for you. Shall I show him in?” “There’s what?” “A client, Mr. Strike.” (Galbraith: 2013: 24)

The explanation of the quotation above is John Bristow adoptive brother of supermodel who falls from a balcony come to meet a detective named Cormoran Strike who is hired to investigate the case of his sister Lula Landry. Because John believe that his sister do not suicide but was killed by someone.

John Bristow met a detective Strike and bring the evidence. It can be seen from the following quotation:

“Tansy Bestigui’s, for a start.” She was the neighbor who said she heard an argument upstairs? And then, there was the CCTV footage. With a kind of furtive eagerness, Bristow now drew from an inside pocket of his jacket a slightly crumpled clean envelope and held it out. “ I’ve written it all down. The timings and everything. It’s all in here. You’ll see how it fits together.” (Galbraith: 2013; 35-36)

The explanation of the quotation above is John Bristow adoptive brother of supermodel come to met a detective named Cormoran Strike who investigated the case of his sister and he has evidence that Lula was murdered instead of committing suicide by bringing an envelope which contains two proofs namely CCTV footage and Mrs. Tansy Bestigui argument, that’s a Lula’s neighbors who hear Lula fighting with someone just before Lula falling from the balcony of her apartment.

After an investigation by several steps, the detective states that Lula Landry has been murdered and the culprit was John Bristow. It can be seen from the following quotation:

(11)

“No, John, you weren’t deluded,” said Strike. “Not deluded. More like bat-shit insane. You killed your sister, got away with it, and then asked meto reinvestigate her death.” (Galbraith: 2013; 545)

The explanation of the quotation above that the real culprit of Lula’s death is John Bristow, who is none other than the person who hired detective Strike to investigate the death of Lula. John Bristow is Lula’s adopted brother.

The killer of Lula is her adopted brother John Bristow. It can be seen from the following quotation:

“As you fought, and you forced her across her sitting room towards that balcony and the drop. “It’s too late, I’ve already done it! And you called her a lying fucking bitch, and you threw her down into the street to her death.” (Galbraith: 2013; 559)

The explanation of the quotation above that John is real killer and when Lula and John fought, John forced Lula to approach the balcony, John pushed her down from the balcony into the street. John with a sense of urgency, he finally confessed that he has been killing Lula by pushed her from the balcony.

The reason John kill Lula. It can be seen from the following quotation: “You were yelling at her for not giving you money, for depriving you, just as you’ve always been deprived, haven’t you, John, of your portion of parental love.” (Galbraith: 2013; 559)

The explanation of the quotation above is the reason John killed Lula because Lula did not want to give him money and John lacking affection. Johndid not get attention of his family that has been felt from the first and John really wanted the inheritance from the death of Lula.

The conclusion of the statements above are John Bristow met Strike to investigate the murder case of his sister Lula Landry who pushed by someone and then fell from the balcony. After investigation, detective Strike already knew who

(12)

the killer of Lula and the killer is John Bristow, her adoptive brother who is none other than the person who hired detective to investigate Lula’s case and the reason isLula did not want to give him money, and John felt that he did not get attention from his family and also John really wanted the inheritance from Lula’s death.

The Steps of Detective to Reveal the Murder Case

The steps undertaken by the detectives to reveal the murder case of Lula are:

First step is search for information to people who are in touch with Lula before being find dead. But before Strike met these people, Strike saw evidence inside the envelope that carryed by John.It can be seenfrom the following quotation:

“He had boarded this bus around fifty minutes before Lula Landry died. He was next seen on CCTV footage taken in Mayfair, walking in the direction of Landry’s house, at 1:39 a.m. Footage taken from the same CCTV camera shorthly after showed The Runner sprinting back past the camera at 2:12 and out of sight.” (Galbraith: 2013; 66-67) The explanation of the quotation above is the first step that detective done is looking at an envelope that contents ofrecords of CCTV footage there are gestures of a two mysterious men who around apartment Lula, before and after Lula fall from her balcony and that evidence in the envelope is written and taken by John.

Second steps is Strike asked his secretary Robin to find news about Lula Landry. It can be seen from the following quotation:

“Strike had only asked Robin to look up Landry’s connections on the internet because he had nothing else for her to do. For the past hour or so she had been reading out odd the snippets and articles about Landry and her associates....”(Galbraith: 2013; 76)

(13)

The explanation of the quotation above is Strike given the task to his secretary named Robin to search and read some news about Lula Landry and acquaintances of the supermodel Lula Landry from the internet.

Third steps is Strike met Derrick Wilson the sequrityof Lula’s flat. It can be seen from the following quotation:

“I needed the bathroom. First thing I heard was a bang. I realized later, that must’ve been the body Lula, I mean falling. There’s Mrs. Bestigui, shaking and screaming and acting like one mad bitch in her underwear. She says Lula’s died, that she’s been pushed of her balcony by a man in her flat. Half her head was caved in. Blood in the snow. I could tell her neck was broken” (Galbraith: 2013; 115)

The explanation of the quotation above is Strike asked Wilson security Lula's flat what happen on the night of Lula’s fall. Wilson do not see when Lula fell and what exactly happened because at that moment he was in the bathroom. But, he was hearing sound from a distance and the turns out it is the sound of the body’s Lula who falling from balcony. And Wilson also heard the scrime of Mrs. Tansy neighbors Lula, that Lula died because falling from the balcony of her flat which is pushed by someone.”

“I grabbed the master key out the back room and I ran upstairs. No one on the stairwell. I unlocked the door of Lula’s flat. But when I got up to the flat, it was empty. I looked in every room and there was no one there. I opened the wardrobes, even, but nothing. The doors opened straight away; it was still at her floor. It was empty.” (Galbraith: 2013; 117)

The explanation of the quotation above is after Wilson heard the scrime of Mrs. Tansy that Lula died because falling from the balcony which is pushed by someone,Wilson directly inspect every room, but he did not find anyone in every room.

(14)

Fourth steps is met Lula’s driver Kolovas-Jones. It can be seen from the following qoutation:

“She come out of her mother’s place and she was strange. Like she was in shoking or something. Then she ask me for a pen, and started scribbling on a bit of blue paper. So, I drover her to Vashti, because she was supposed be meeting her friend there for lunch. And the blue pieceof paper was gone. “Did you mention this blue paper to the police? Yeah, they didn’t think it was worth shit. Said it was probably a shoping list.” (Galbraith: 2013; 128-130)

The explanation of the above quotation is detective Strike met Lula’s driver,Jones which drove Lula to her mother place right on the day before its Lula died. Lula out of her mother's place with a face that looks like a person who shock because something. They drove to Vashti because Lula’s friend want to meet Lula, Lula write down something on blue paper at the time their way from Lula’s mother place to the Vashti. Blue paper above already did not exist and Lula did not speak a word. But, when they are back to the Lula’s flat, that blue paper was gone. Kolovas-Jones talks about the blue paper to the police, but the police considered that such paper is just shopping list.

Fifth step is interviewed Mrs. Tansy Bestigui, the neighbor of Lula with John Bristow. It can be seen from the following quotation:

“So, I went to the bathroom to get one, and as I was heading back across the sitting room, towards the bedroom, I heard shouthing. And then — and then he threw her over, I actually saw her fall. I ran out of the flat, past Freddie, and downstairs. I just wanted to tell sequrity that there was a man up there, so they could get him.” (Galbraith: 2013;19) The explanation of the quotation above is Strike met with Mrs. Tansy Bestigui who accompanyed John Bristow. She is a Lula’s neighbors in the apartment. That night, Mrs. Tansy go to the bathroom, and when she was going

(15)

back to the bedroom, she was hearing Lula fight with a man just before Lula fell from balcony. And Mrs. Tansy actually saw when Lula fell from balcony and sherunning out of the apartment to tell sequrity that Lula fell from the balcony because it is pushed by a someone.

Sixth steps is received files from Erick Wardle the police who handled the case of Lula.It can be seen from the following quotation:

“Here were statements from those who had seen Lula Landry during the final evening of her life; a report on the DNA evidence lifted from her flat; photocopied pages of the visitors book compiled by sequrity at number 18, Kentigern Gardens; details of the medication Lula had been prescribed to control bipolar disorder; the autopsy report; medical reports for the previous year; mobile phone and landline records; and a precis of the findings on teh model’s laptop. There was also a DVD, on which Wardle had scribbled CCTV 2 Runners.” (Galbraith: 2013; 209)

The explanation of the quotation above is Strike received files given to Wardle which contains statements from people who saw Lula before death, a copy of the guest book of Kentigern Gardens number 18¸ the autopsy report of Lula, and file from the findings of Lula’s laptop, mobile phone and then DVD which contain of CCTV footage around the Lula’s apartment before and after she dead.

Seventh steps is meet Spanner who smart about computer. It can be seen from the following quotation:

“Police’ve got good technie people. I doubt I’m gonna find anything they haven’t. They might not have been looking for the right stuff,” said Strike. “and they might not’ve realized what it meant even if they found it. All activity on or leading up to the eight of January. I haven’t got the password, and I’d rather not go back to the police and ask unless I have to.” (Galbraith: 2013; 274-276)

The explanation of the quotationabove is Strike met with Spanner his friend which graduated of computer bachelor to ask for helping finding-files or

(16)

any activities on 8 January and all that led up to that date and Strike hoped if Spanner finding-files which have not been found by police technicians for help to revealed the Lula’s case.

Eighth steps is Strike met Lula’s friend saat di rumah sakit yang bernama Rochelle Onifade. It can be seen from the following quotations:

“Strike tried a different tack. You know Kieran quite well, do you?” he asked. “Yeah,” she said self-consciously. “I met him a lot with ‘er. ‘E wuz always driving ‘er.” “He says that Lula was writing something in the back of the car, before she arrived at Vashti. Did she show you, or give you, anything she’d written? No, I ain’t seen nuthin like that. Why, what was it?” “I don’t know. Maybe it were a shopping list or something.”(Galbraith: 2013; 296)

The explanation of the quotation above is Strike met Lula’s friend named Rochelle Onifade. Lula drove by her driver Kolovas-Jones. Rochelle herself also familiar with the driver, they met just days before Lula fell from her the balcony of her apartment. Strike asked whether Rochelle know what the contain of a paper written by Lula gone after they met at Vashti.

“I think you know something you’re not telling me, Rochelle.” She glared at him. “Take this. If you think of anything you’d like to tell me, call, all right? Call that mobile number. If Lula was murdered, and you know something, you could be in danger from the killer too.”(Galbraith: 2013; 302)

The explanation of the quotation above is Strike knowing that Rochelle hide something important related to the death of Lula. As a detective, Strike knows it and Strike even gave his card if Rochelle wants to tell the other important information to him. Strike also tells Rochelle that she was also in danger if she knew anything of the death of Lula.

(17)

Ninth steps is Strike met Lula’s friend Mr. Somé. It can be seen from the following quotation:

“When did you last hear from her?” “She phoned on me on the Wednesday, while I was still in Tokyo, so I didn’t pick up; but she left a massage, and she was not suicidal. Aw wight, darlin’? Got something to tell you, I’m not sure whether you’re going to like it but it’s a biggie, and I’m so fucking happy I’ve gotta tell someone, so ring me when you can, OK, can’t wait, mwah mwah.”(Galbraith: 2013; 326)

The explanation of the quotation above is Strike visit to the studio of Guy Somé and met Lula’s friend named Mr. Somé and asked when the last time Mr. Some and Lula communication before Lula fell from the balcony of her apartment. Mr. Somé said on Wednesday when he was in Tokyo, Lula had called him but Mr. Somé did not answer because he was busy. But, Lula left a massage with voice that sounded excited not sound like signs of people who wants to commit suicide.

Tenth steps is Strike met Spanner. It can beseen from the following quotation:

“Finally he began: Password’s Agyeman, and it was reset five days before she died.” “It’s a surname. Ghanaian. Well, the only other thing I noticed was that a big photo file was deleted off it on seventeenth of March.” (Galbraith: 2013; 343-344)

The explanation of the quotationabove is Spanner met Strike to tell of Lula’s netbook password and Spanner demonstrate if Lula savedthe file which containing the identity of a family and also Spanner tell if there is a photographs that's been remove from Lula's laptop on the seventh of March.

(18)

Eleventh steps is reviewing to Lula’s flat with his secretary Robin and sequrity Derrick Wilson. It can be seen from the following quotation:

“Derrick, can you show me how you searched this place? Wilson though for a moment, then said: “I come in here first. Looked around, seen the doors open. He had held the doorjambs, leaning to rooms, casting a rapid look around.Nothing — so I started running back down again. This cornerI slipped. I forgot that. There was water. And I just got up and kept running.” “Did you tell the police about the drops of water?” “No, I forgot. “Something that had bothered Strike all along had at last been made clear. He let out a great satisfied sigh and grinned.” (Galbraith: 2013; 361-363)

The explanation of the quotation above is Strike and Robin come to meet with Derrick Wilson sequrity Lula's apartment to review in Lula’s roomand Wilson point out to Strike at the time how he checkevery room in the apartment when Lula fall. Wilson check Lula’s room after he was hearing Mrs. Tansy scream. When Wilson told if he slips because the drops water made Strike get clarity from what has been troubling her mind during the time of Lula's case.

Strike checked to see that Lady Vyette Brstow’s name was clearly marked beside Flat E, then retreated to the pavement and stood waiting in the gentle warmth of the day, looking up and down the street.(Galbraith: 2013;515)

The explanation of the quotation above is Strike cameto house of adopted mother of Lula, Lady Vyette Bristow. Strike without John because John has to go. John prohibit Strike to the house without him, but Strike still wanted to go even without John to looking for a evidence.

(19)

“Vyette, would it be all right if I used your bathroom?” he asked. She assented with a sleepy nod. Strike got up, and moved quickly, and surprisingly quietly for a man of his hulk, into the walk in wardrobe. He saw the line of pale blue running down the side of the stiff rectangular cloth-covered board holding the base of the bag in shape. He lifted up the board and saw, beneath it, folded piece of pale blue paper, scribbled all over in an untidy hand.” (Galbraith: 2013; 529) Explanation of the quotation above iswhen Mrs. Vyette sleepy Strike excused to the bathroom but he actually took the opportunity to get into Lula’s wardrobe. Strike moved quickly to the wardrobe where Strike found a pile of new bags in one of the bags Strike found a piece of blue paper folded and there is Lula’s handwriting.

2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE 2.1 Novel

Peck and Coyle (1984) say that the novel reflects a move away from an essentially religious view of life towards a new interest in the complexities of everyday experience. Mostnovels are concerned with ordinary people andtheir problems in the societies in which they find themeselves. Novel present a documentary picture of life. Alongside the fact that novels look at people in society, the aither major charactristics of the genre is that novels tell a story. In fact, novels tend to tell the same few stories time and time again. Novelists frequently focus on the tensions between individuals and the society inwhich they live, presenting characters who are at odds with that society.

Narrative structure. Narrative is the organisation of a series of a events into the form of a story. This obviously what we have in novels; what is less obvious is how similar the narrative structure is in most novels.

A novel usually begins with a description of a place or character. The setting is likely to strike us as either an attractive one, where the characters should feel comfortable, or an unattractive one, where people are bound to fell unhappy and alienated. A character introduced at the beginning of a novel will usually come into collision with society. The opening chapters will expand the picture of the characters and the society they live in. The novel will then progress by taking the characters through a sequence of events extending over a certain time span.

Narrator. The narrator tells the story in a novel. Novel contain simple stories which, in their telling, become complicated. There are two overlapping

ways by which the novelist can complicate matters. One is by introducing complications in the content: the inclusion of a mass of details about people, places and events makes the story seem substantial and real. The other way in which the writer can complicate matters is by the way in which he chooses to narrate the story: a story can be told in many ways, for every narrator will see the things from a different point-of-view.

-In a first-person narrative the central character relates the events he or she experienced.

- In omniscient narration a narrator who can see everything relates the story. In omniscient narrator can be unintrusive: that is to say, we are not really aware of the personal telling the story because the action is presented without many explicit comments or judgements.

- Intrusive narrator who comments of the events and characters.

The novel as a work of fiction offers a world, a world which contains models of life, imaginative world, which was built through intrinsic elements such as events, plot, characters and characterizations, setting, point of view, and others all of which, of course are imaginative. The novel is a formal categorization. Type - type of which is such a different type of categories. The sideline categories can be determined by technique (allegory), content types (science fiction), themes (existentialism), or a combination of them all. The categories will not mean much unless we know they are connected to each other or why the writer more often to one rather than the other. For example, why an author prefer detective stories? Surely not because the author is interested in the investigation and crime. The

(24)

Gold Bug works of Poe is more of a detective story when compared to the works

of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, whereas the second story tells about a detective who are solving a crime case. The hallmark of a detective is on the tendency to reduce any human habits into a series of logical arrangements.

The Cuckoo’s Calling is one of the novel about detective. Talk about detective, the detective story have six elements, such as solution, solving mystery, incompetent or ineffectual police, a susfect who appears gulty at first but is later proved innocent, detective’s friend or confidant, and often the narrator whose slowness in interpreting clues emphasizes by contrast the detective’s brilliace. Detective novels contents enough clues to make up the sequence of events and our attempts to identifies. Due to the reduction of all terms into logic-logic, detective stories tend to ignore the emotions and morality. Rarely found a crying widow character or villain who regret in detective novels. The reason is not because of the pain and regret is considered no useful, but because those two things be considered disturbing world view that was already in such a way.

2.2 Intrinsic Elements

Generally, a wide range of traditional elements can be grouped into two parts, although this division is not really broken. The division of the element in question is intrinsic and extrinsic element. Both of these elements is often called the critic in a review or discuss the novel, or literature in General. In this scientific work, the element used is the intrinsic elements of the author.

Intrinsic elements are elements that build literature itself. It is these elements that cause the literary present as a literary work, the elements of which

(25)

are factual will be found when people read literary works. The intrinsic elements of the novel are elements directly, participate to build story. A blend of the various intrinsic elements of this is what makes a novel form. As for the elements of intrinsic events, story, plot, characters, themes, narrative point of view, language or style of language and others. But in this scientific work, the authors analyze only four elements of which deals with the study of novels, namely, theme, plot, character, and setting.

2.2.1 Theme

Stanton (1965:88) and Kenney (1966:20) say that the theme is the meaning contained in a story. Hartoko & Rahmanto (1986:142)says that the theme is the idea of a common basis of propping up a literary work that is contained in the text as the structure of semantic difference and that concerns the similarities or the differences. The theme is filtered from the motifs that are present in the work concerned, determine the presence of events, conflicts, and certain situations. The theme in a lot of things are "binding" the presence or absence of events-conflict-specific situations, including various intrinsic elements of the other, because those things shall be logically support the clarity of themes that would like delivered. The theme became the basis of the development of the whole story, then it is both animates all parts of that story. The theme has a common generalization, wider, and abstract.

Theme as meaning a principal work of fiction not (intentionally) to hide, because it is precisely this that is offered to the reader. But the theme is the overall

(26)

meaning of the story, by itself support he'll "hidden" behind a story that supports it.

2.2.2 Plot

Kenny (1966:14) elaborated the plot as the events shown in the story that is not simple, since the author weaves the events based on the causal. Much earlier, as indicated above, Forstre has also expressed similar things. Forstre (1970 (1927): 93) says thata plot is the story of the events which have an emphasis on the existence of a relationship of causality. The events of the story or the plot manifested by deeds, behaviors, and attitudes of characters (main) story. Even at large events that are displayed in the story of none other than deeds and behavior of the characters, either verbal or nonverbal nature, either inner or physical. The plot is a reflection or even in the form of travel behavior of the characters in Act, thought, felt and behaved in the face of a variety of life issues. Events, deeds, or the behaviour of human life are the plot if the typical nature, contain elements of conflict-interrelated, and the most important is: interesting to tell and hence are dramatic. And in this novel are included in one of the detective novels, then plot that used a mysterious plot that is intellectual. Plot: Mysterious Intellectual. Forster (1970:94-95) says that the plot of a work of fiction, it has a mysterious and intellectual properties. Plot showing the events that contain a conflict that was able to attract or even overtakes the reader. It encourages the reader to know the next events. But, of course it will not be put forward for granted at once and quickly by the author, but rather, just maybe, get around with only spoken little by little, intentionally "separating" the events related to the actual logical-direct, or

(27)

hide something that is becoming a key issue. In this way, usually it will further encourage the reader to know the continuation of incidents that were satisfactory. It is these circumstances by Forster is referred to as the mysterious nature of its plot.

2.2.3 Character

The people in a novel are referred to as characters. Character story "just" is a creation of the author's character, he must be a people who live in a reasonably natural, as human life is composed of flesh and blood, who have thoughts and feelings. A story is said to be reasonable and relevant, if it reflects and has similarities to the real human life (lifelike).

The character is commonly used in two contexts. The first context, the characters refer to individuals who appear in stories like when there are people who ask; "How many characters are there in the story?". The second context, the character refers to the mixing of various interests, desires, emotions, and the moral principles of such individuals as it appears implicit in the question; "Do you think, how does the characters in the story?". In most of the stories can be found one 'main character' characters associated with all events taking place in the story. Typically, these events cause a change in the character or on our attitude toward the character. Character can mean ' story ' and principals may also be ' character '. Between a character with the character that he had indeed been a blend of intact.

As novel always deal with characters who are at odds with their family or coventional social values. The novel will bring varoius characters into confrontation and put characters into problematic situations. The novel will

(28)

present characters caught in various dilemmas; at the end of the novel she will either make or fail to make an accommodation with society.

2.2.4 Setting

The setting is the environment that covers events in the story, a universe that interact with the events that are taking place. Background as one of the elements of fiction, the story as fact, which along with other elements to form a story. Items on the settings can be distinguished into three principal elements, namely the place, time, and social. The third element is that although each offers different problems and can be discussed in its own, in fact inter-related and mutually influence each other. In other words, setting it as part and parcel of the story. The Ordinance setting as one element of fiction not be seen separately from the various other elements, but instead of alloy and coherence with the whole.

1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study

Damsrosch (2007) says that literature simply means “written with letters” – really any text at all. But, in its cultural sense, “literature” refers foremost to poems, plays, and prose fiction – works of creative imagination written in heightened and pleasurable language. Literary work is a form reflection or picture life and the creative community productive in producing a work. Through the work literary author tried to reveal life community they experienced or what they feel. Literary works born of the desire of the author to reveal its existence as a human being ideas and certain massage were inspired by imagination and socio-culture realities of the author and using language media as the way. Work literature is a socio-culture phenomenon involving human creativity. Nugihantoro (2007:57) says that literary works born of expression deposition of experience available in the soul of the author in depth through the imagination. Literary works born of the background and impetus basic human to express himself. A literary work is perceived as an expression the reality of life and the context of presentation arranged structured, interesting and use language media text compiled through experience and reflection knowledge potentially has a wide range representation of life forms. Novel as a literary works that needs interpretation of life. A novel expresses some axpects of human’s love and existance. Because novel talks about human activities and describes what hapenned in surrounding, so it is written in long composition. Kenney (1966:103)

(30)

says that novel is generally though of as countaining about forty five thousand words or more.

Henry (1976:78) says that detective story is short story or novel in which mystery is unreveled by a detective through the assembly and interpretation of clues. The tragic murder often occured but not all is revealed, because there is not detective who investigates that murder cases.

Talking about detective story, The Cuckoo’s Calling novel is one of the novel which tells about the murder case who investigated by detective story and the The Cuckoo’s Calling novel has a story about murder case investigated by a detective named Cormoran Strike. Lula Landry is a famous supermodel who was found dead because of falling to the surface of the snow from the balcony of her room. Police declared the incident pure suicide. But John Bristow, adopted brother Lula did not believe in the results of the police investigation. John hired the services of detective Cormoran Strike to find out the murderers of Lula.

Strike interviews several people such as Lula’s adopted mother, Lula’s driver, sequrity of Lula’s flat, and Strike is especially intrigued by the statement of Lula's neighbour, who said she heard Lula fighting with a man and then falling from her balcony. Strike discovers that the murder of Lula was for the ten million pounds she possessed. Strike figures out that John is in fact the murderer, hoping to get her money. He was using Cormoran Strike in an attempt to frame Lula's biological brother Jonah for her murder, suspecting (correctly) that Lula had made a will leaving her fortune to Jonah. John hoped that if the will, which he had been unable to locate, surfaced, Jonah would be unable to inherit if he had been

(31)

convicted of Lula's murder. He had hoped that Strike's friendship with Charlie would endear him to him. When Strike presents the truth to John, John attempts to stab him, resulting in a physical altercation.
