How does the teacher solve the problems during the teaching and learning process? 100 Preliminary Study Field Notes The observation was conducted in SMP N 3 Klaten at 26 February 2013. The observation was held in class VIIIB. The subject today was English and the materials was about recount text. The class began at 08.20 a.m. The class opened by the teacher. At first time, when the researcher came to 8B class, he did open class directly. It was caused by students were busy with their own activities, like chatting with their friends, walking around the class, and etc. In conclusion at the beginning of the activities, students were not ready to join the class. Then, the researcher was ready with the materials being studied. The researcher greeted the students. He taught a little bit about the unique greeting. He also introduced the observer. After the introduction, the researcher explained about his undergraduate thesis and the purpose of his teaching that day. Actually, the teaching learning process today was the way to obtain the data. After that, the lesson was started. The researcher reviewed the materials of the last meeting. Today’s English class dealt with recount text. The researcher had planned that the class was going to have reading, but the major focus was on language feature or appropriate tense namely simple past tense. The researcher told the students that they would learn about recount text. Then, he also told them about what would they learn involved generic structure and language feature. Afterwards, the students had worksheet to do which was finding the meaning of vocabulary exist in recount text and complete some words by using past form of verbs in recount text. The students got difficulties in doing the task given because they were lack of ability in memorizing the past form of verbs. They did not pay attention for what had been taught by the teacher previously. It could be proven that they were no responses from the students when the researcher was explaining the materials. The researcher did forget to discuss the answer from the worksheet together with the students. He asked to the students to do in pairs in order to help 101 one to another in doing the tasks. In this activity, students were active. The students could share their own ability about the meaning of English words and the past form of verbs. It was seen that through in pairs could help the students to be active in doing the tasks faster than individual works. Finally, the teacher corrected the students’ answer if there were any wrong answers from the students in doing worksheet. After giving the worksheet to the students, the researcher also gave the test especially about past form of verbs. He wanted to measure how far the students’ ability in understanding the past form of verbs. The test was filling the blanks some sentences about past form of verbs. The students honestly faced the difficulties in understanding the past form of verbs. It might be caused by the strategy used was boring for the students or the way of teaching made students were not interested in learning the materials. Nevertheless, most students in VIIIB class actually had low ability in memorizing the words especially past form of irregular verbs. Seeing the problem faced by the students, this preliminary study was very useful for the researcher to know what the real condition happened in VIIIB class during learning a recount text. The researcher tried to solve the problem only asked to the students to read vocabulary and memorize regular and irregular verbs. In conclusion, the researcher suggested to the students to practice more in memorizing past form of verbs in their home.
