The developed CI set is more impact-oriented. Another difference is the existence of the policy aspect of the ITTO’s CI set. The first criterion ‘Enabling Conditions for Sustainable Forest Management’ is more of a government role than an FMU role.

4.1.3.2. Forest Stewardship Council Principle Criteria set

The Forest Stewardship Council FSC is an international non-profit organization founded in 1993 to support environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the worlds forests. It is an association of members consisting of a diverse group of representatives from environmental and social groups, the timber trade and the forestry profession, indigenous peoples organizations, community forestry groups and forest product certification organizations from around the world. Membership is open to all who are involved in forestry or forest products and who share its aims and objectives. FSC supports the development of national and local standards that implement the international Principles and Criteria of Forest Stewardship at the local level. These standards are developed by national and regional working groups that work to achieve consensus among the wide range of people and organizations involved in forest management and conservation in each part of the world. FSC has developed guidelines for developing regional certification standards to guide working groups in this process. The list of FSC’s PC is given in Appendix 2. Table 4.6. shows the comparison of the developed CI with FSC’s PC. Table 4.6. The FSC’s PC set acts as a standard for certification practice rather than as a scientific PC set. This set has been quoted by different organizations due to its ease of use in the certification process. The policy PC set refers to the national level rather than the FMU level.
