“English Opens More Doors for Success”

The Language Center (LC) of University of Muhammadiyah Malang held ESP Graduation Day at the UMM
Dome on December 10, 2011. The ceremony brought “English Opens More Windows for Success” as the theme. It
was attended by 3400 ESP graduates from all departments. They joined ESP Graduation Day after passing ESP
courses offered at their first and second semester. The program comprised of three main agenda - the graduation
speech from the Vice Rector for Financial Affairs and the LC official, the announcement of best achieved ESP
graduates, and certificate conferral to all graduates.
The ESP Graduation Day started with graduation speech from Mr. Soeparto, as the representative of LC official.
He congratulated all graduates for their success in passing ESP courses in semester 1 and 2. He called students to
keep improving their English and be keen on searching for opportunities to continue their study abroad. He proposed
some possible scholarship programs to be applied by UMM students. The second speech was delivered by the Vice
Rector for Financial Affair, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. He stated that the ESP Graduation Day was not the
end of students’ learning English, but it was even the beginning. English proficiency is achieved by continuous learning
and habitual usage; therefore, the students should never stop learning and using English even though they no longer
attended ESP courses. In addition, he emphasized on the crucial role of English in many aspects of life as it opens
more doors or opportunities for better future.
The most awaited agenda was the announcement of best ESP Best Achieved Graduates by Mr. Hartono, M.Pd.
The best achieved graduates were those with GPA 4.00 (of maximum 4.00) and the highest scores of English
Proficiency Test conducted a week prior to the graduation day. The top ten best faculty graduates were awarded with
certificates of achievement; while the top three best university graduates were awarded with trophy, certificate of
achievement, fresh money from language center, voucher and merchandise from UMM’s Foreign Language Course
and UMM Inn. Here are the best faculty graduates: Dini Setiya Praja (Health Science faculty), Beatta Meidini Rahmat
(Medical Faculty), Dewi Irawati (Psychology), Dyah Kusuma Anindita Y (Law Faculty), Anjar bahrudin (Islamic Studies
Faculty), Moh. Qosyim Ayyubi (Agriculture and Fishery Faculty), Dimas Faqih (Engineering Faculty), Eric Pradana
(Economics Faculty), Ulfa Rahmawati (Teacher Training and Education Faculty), and Wildan (Social and Political
Science Faculty). The top three best university graduates comprised of three categories: The First Best Achieved G
raduate (Wildan), The Second Best Achieved Graduate (Ulfa Rahmawati), and The Third Best Achieved Graduate (
Beatta Meidini Rahmat).
The graduation ceremony was closed by conferring ESP certificates and academic transcripts to all graduates.
