As a well known beef cattle and good species producer, Madura Island has a
strategic role in supplying local beef cattle. Madura cattle has important role to
support local agricultural and animal systems and also to hlfill national beef cattle
stock. In Madura Island, cattle is raised by small-holder in small scale farm as a parttime business or as a branch of farm operation.
The objective of this research is to study production and reproduction potential
of Madura cattle at Desa Samaran by observing of age distribution, sex, and
productive and reproductive rates .
This research was conducted on February 2000. Cattle used in this study were
belong to farmers in Desa Samaran. Data collected comprised primary and secondary
data. Primary data included number of cattle, age, sex, sex ratio, calving interval,
mortality rate and the keeping and breeding system. Secondary data was collected

from literature study and information from local insitutions. Data was analyzed
descriptively by calculating mean and standard of deviation of the population. The
result was comparatively analyzed with standard data.
Research result showed that Madura cattle population at Desa Samaran is 720
heads with an ownership average of 2,87 heads per family. The highest number
group is cow (49,16%) and the lowest is steer (3,06%). The length of cattle keeping
at Desa Samaran is about 6-7 years for male and 9-10 years for female. Sex ratio of
adult Madura cattle is about 3,83-7,00 (one bull for 4-7 cows). Calf mortality rate is
about 3,61% per year and total mortality rate is 4,50 % per year. Calving interval of
Madura cattle in this village is about 13-14 month which produces 0,50
headslcowlyears weaned calves with average body weight of 41,25 kg.
According to population dynamics analysis for 5 years, it is concluded that
