playing is fun activity for children and it is usually called recreational time out activity. Ur 1998 explains that there are tree sources of young learners’ attention in class, namely picture, story, and game. Children like to see interesting pictures, which is sharp and colourful.

B. Problem Statement

The subject of this study is the students of the sixth grade of SDN 05 Jaten. The number of students is 20 students consisting of 15 boys and 5 girls. The school is located at Jl. Josroyo Indah II Perum Josroyo, Jaten Karanganyar 57771, Central Java. Based on the background, there are many problems that may arise. Some problems can be formulated as follows: 1. Can picture improve the students’ vocabulary? How effectively can picture improve the students’ vocabulary? 2. What will happen when teacher teaches by using picture? 3. What are the strengths and the weaknesses of teaching by using picture?

C. The Objective of the Research

Based on the formulation of the problem, the general objective of this research is to improve students’ vocabulary by using pictures. Particularly, this research is aimed to find out: 1. whether teaching children by using picture can effectively improve the students’ vocabulary, 2. the phenomena happening in the class when the teacher teaches by using picture, 3. the strengths and weaknesses of teaching by using picture.

D. The Benefits of the Study

After knowing the use of pictures in teaching vocabulary, this research hopefully will give some contributions in the teaching of English at elementary school. There are some expected benefits of the study for the English teachers and students: 1. For English teachers, this research is aimed to help the teachers: a solve the problems faced by the teacher in teaching vocabulary during the teaching and learning process. b improve the teacher’s technique of teaching vocabulary, especially for elementary school students. 2. For the students, this research will help the students: a improve the students’ motivation in learning vocabulary. b improve the students’ achievement in vocabulary test. c improve the students’ vocabulary. 11
