This chapter focuses on some discussions about background of the study,
statement of the problems, purposes of the study, significance of the study, scope and
limitation, and definition of key terms.

✍✎✏✑✒✓✔✕✖✗ ✔ f the Study
Literature is human expression with a symbolic written form of words which
is designed to develop their immagination. As Paul Valery in Koesnosoebroto states,
Literature is, and cannot be anything but, a kind of extension and application of
certain properties of language
(1988: 1). Besides, Bennet and Royle state,
Literature is the kind of writing which most persistently and most provocatively
engages with the uncanny aspects of experience, thought and feeling (2004: 35).
On the other hand, literature is language in which the various elements and
components of the text are brought into a complex relation (Culler, 1997 :29). The
world which is created by the author s imagination can be formed in the poem, novel,
and drama. All of them are the fictions which are separated from the reality.
Concerning with Culler s opinion that literature has a special relation to the world
relation we call fictional , it means that literary work just a product of human beings
a
2
imagination. The literary work is a linguistic event that projects a fictional world
which includes speakers, actors, events, and an implied audience (1997: 31).
There are some literary works which can be elaborated into deep analysis.
They are novel, short story, poetry, and drama. Drama is one of the literary works and
one of the collecting dialogues that presented by the actors on the stage in front of the
audience. Film is one kinds of drama, but it is not presented on the stage in front of
audience like drama. According to Jahn (2003), film is a multimedial narrative form
based on a physical record of sounds and moving pictures.
Jahn (2003) asserted that film script is a text containing a film s action
narrative and dialogue. A film script is either a recipe for making a film or a written
record of a finished film. Related to the genre, film is both a narrative and a
performed genre. It is assumed that film is a performed genre that comes to life in
performance. Like watching a play, watching a film is a collective public experience
and social occasion. Since film is a narrative genre, it is related to a textual form; and
script film is considered as a textual form. Jahn (2003) said that script film is also
considered as a text. While drama, according to Arp and Johnson (2006: 1027) like
prose fiction, makes use of plot and characters, develops themes, arouses emotional
responses, and may be either literary or commercial in its representation of reality.
Thus, film analysis can build an interesting relationship between text and
performance just like in drama analysis.
3
In this study, the film is analyzed as one of the literary works it offers many
valuable lesson, message and interesting story.
✘✙✚✛✜✢✣ ✛✤ ✥ ✦✙✜✣✧✥ film was set in
Japan during the Showa Era, tells the story of Chiyo Sakamoto (portrayed by Suzuka
Ohgo as a child and by Zhang Ziyi as an adult), a poor, young Japanese girl who has
been sold along with her older sister Satsu into a life of servitude by her parents when
she is nine years old. Chiyo is taken in by the proprietress of a geisha house, Mother
(Kaori Momoi), but Satsu is rejected and is sold to another house in the "pleasure
district" of the Hanamachi. At the okiya (geisha house) she meets another young girl
named "Pumpkin" (Youki Kudoh). Both girls are sent off to geisha school, but Chiyo
dishonors the okiya by attempting to run away with her sister. Instead of training to
become a geisha, she is given manual labor to do to pay off the debt of her purchase.
Chiyo also has numerous unpleasant run-ins with the okiya's senior Geisha
Hatsumomo (Gong Li). Chiyo grows as an adult Sayuri and being a popular Geisha
with so many challenging being a popular Geisha.

the oversea box office of 10 million dollars. Furthermore, there has been a tourist

commercial success. It was nominated for six Oscar Awards, and eventually won
three of those: Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography (Jin

Then, based on the literature consideration, it is considered that this story is
very interesting to be watched and to be read, because this film was full of
challenging of life, tell about Sayuri s struggles to survive in her life, until her life
itself brings her to become the most popular Geisha, in the process making a lot of
enemies, hence this story tends to show plot, character, and action more.
