A. Conclusion

Based on the previous analysis, there are two points to draw as conclusions of the study. The first is about major symbols which exist in Andrea Hirata’s The Rainbow Troops and their extended meanings. While, the second conclusion deals with the significance of existing symbols in the novel in conveying the theme. There are five major symbols which can be found in Andrea Hirata’s The Rainbow Troops . The symbols appear in some ways. The title The Rainbow Troops appears by being mentioned in the title. While, Lintang which appears as both name and character symbolism is emphasized in two ways. The first way is by being contrasted to the surrondings, while the second way is by evoking certain emotional power through the character. On the other hand, the filicium tree appears by repetition in certain crucial moments. The Ferris wheel also appears by evoking certain emotional power. Finally, the crocodile appears as a symbol by PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI being mentioned repeatedly and forms certain pattern in which the crocodile appears before or during some disasters. The Rainbow Troops is a name given by Ibu Muslimah to her ten beloved students. This name is given because of their habit to watch rainbow after every rain. However, the name The Rainbow Troops seems to bring wider meaning than just the reason above. The Rainbow Troops is a way for Bu Mus to kindle the spirit of her students and to show her hope that these all students will give new life for themselves, for the family, and for their lovely Belitong. While, Lintang as name symbolism shows spirit or energy that guides and encourages people to be dare to dream, to have higher aspirations for the future, to lift their lives up and of course to leave the ‘dark’ side of their lifes with their own struggle. Lintang also symbolizes irony of life. Lintang is a representation of victim of unjust society. Being smart is not a guarantee for someone to get either a proper life or education. Another major symbol in the novel is the filicium tree. The appearance of filicium tree in the novel symbolizes the relation among God or Heaven, nature, and human. In this novel, it is shown how close the connection between all the characters with God is and how harmonius their relation with the nature is. On the other hand, the Ferris wheel in the novel is a symbol of Ikal’s up and down feeling and emotion toward A Ling. Lastly, the crocodile also appears as a symbol in the novel. Here, it symbolizes dangers, problems and obstacles in life. Finally, those all symbols are related one another. Symbols in the novel bring significance in conveying the theme of the novel. The theme of the novel The Rainbow Troops is about life struggle of ten members of The Rainbow PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI Troops which also reflects the relationship between human and human, human and nature, and of course human and God. By the appearance of those all symbols, readers are allowed to feel the senses experienced by the writer. They are also able to understand the novel deeper and catch hidden message in the novel. In short, symbols has contributed significance on the theme conveyed in Andrea Hirata’s The Rainbow Troops.
