CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter contains background of the study, statement of the problems,
purpose of study, significance of the study, the scope and limitation, and the
definition key term. Each section is presented as follows:

1.1 Background of the Study
Literature is writing in process having excellence of form or expression and
presenting ideas permanent or universal interest (Anderson:Encyclopedia of
Literature, 686). Literature is not science, but literature is inclusive of art
(Sumarjo;Apresiasi Kesustraan,1986). It is because a lot of art elements in the human
element is used. For example; enthusiasm, confidence and passion are applied in
literature. The third elements are difficult to be applied in the scientific
method.Concerning with that explanation it can be stated that literature means a part
of art using beautiful language. That can make our mood entertained.
In every part of the writing on literature, it can make the reader to be drawn
into the story and can give the excitement. Excitement provided in a literary work is
spiritual and intellectual entertainment. Sense of spiritual and intellectual excitement

here, it can provide insight to the reader, because the reader will find some conflicts
and how to solve it in the story that they read. Literature can include in the form of
drama, novel, poetry, and short story.
According to Holman, Novel is used in its broadest sense to designate any
extended fictional prose narrative. In the novel there are elements of intrinsic and
extrinsic. Intrinsic elements are some key elements that make a novel become perfect.
For example, Plot, Character elements are the most important parts in the novel.
Whereas extrinsic are some elements that are optional. For example, background of
the authors, biographies and other things outside from the script.
The story of a novel usually tells about human life interacting with the
environment and with each other. On the novel, the writer tries to direct the reader to
the realities of life through contain of the stories from the novel. In order to novel to
be interesting, the writer gives some intrinsic elements, such as; plot, character and
characteristic, and conflict. Conflict is an inherent incompatibility between the
objectives of two or more characters or forces. It is essential to plot. Without conflict
there is no plot. Conflict is divided into 3 elements, they are: Psychological conflict,
physical conflict and social conflict. Psychological conflict or a situation of

indecision where an individual is confronted have to be chosen between equally
desirable alternatives.
In this case, the writer of this thesis chooses the novel with the title ”The
Hunger Game”. This novel was published in 2008 and the story is written by

3

American written, Suzanne Collins. This novel includes a trilogy novel. This novel is
suitable for young adults, because this novel tells about adventure, love and sacrifice.
The writer will discuss about the psychological conflict of the main character in this
novel is Katniss Everdeen.
The hunger games is a game when the participants kill other participant to
survive. Who is going to survive, it will be the winner. The story is narrated by
Katniss Everdeen, a girl who volunteers to replaces her younger sister who was
elected in this game. The theme and plot from this novel are very simple, but Suzanne
Collins has succeed to make this story become more interesting with mixing an
action, adventure, drama romantic, humanity, friendship and sacrifice. In this novel,
there are a lot of conflicts such as psychological conflict and social conflict. From
those conflicts, the writer is more interested in analyzing the psychological conflicts
of the main character. This a previouse reseach which related to psychological

conflict in main character in a novel. First reseacher was done by Rosita(2007). A
similarity with this research is analyzing the psychological conflict of main character
but the previous research was not explained about the kind of psychological conflict.
Psychological conflict or internal conflict is a conflict of person against self,
takes place within a character. In an internal conflict, a character may struggle to
reach decision, to make a moral choice, or to attain a personal goal. Psychological
conflict here, in sight of herself, she did not want to kill but she was forced to kill to
defend themself.

1.5 Scope and limitation
The scope of this research is about the main character conflict. There are a lot
