This step was called classifying data which would be explained in the following sub-chapter.

3.4.5 Classifying Data

In this step, the overall data were classified based on the research problems. The data classification gives information that could be seen as follows. Table 3.2 Data Classification No. Statements of the problem Supporting Data Total 1. Is there any Samurai ethic codes found in the film entitled “Letters from Iwo Jima”? 2a, 2b, 3a, 4a, 5a, 6b, 7a, 9a, 10a, 11a, 12a, 13b, 14a, 14b, 15a, 15b, 16b, 17a, 18b, 19b, 25a, 25b, 26b, 28a, 30b, 34a, 34b, 35a, 35b, 38a, 39b, 40a, 40b, 48a, 48b, 49a, 51a, 52b, 53b 39 2. What kinds of virtues in the samurai’s ethic code are shown in the movie? 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, 4a, 5a, 6b, 7a, 8a, 9a, 10a, 11a, 12a, 13b, 14a, 14b, 15a, 15b18b, 19b, 25a, 25b, 26b, 28a, 30b, 33a, 33b, 34a, 34b, 35a, 35b, 36b, 37b, 38a, 39b, 40a, 40b, 48a, 48b, 49a, 51a, 52b, 53b 44 3. What were the impacts of Samurai’s ethic codes on the soldiers in the battlefield? 13b, 14a, 14b, 15a, 15b, 16b, 17a, 18b, 19b, 20a, 20b, 21a, 21b, 22b, 23a, 23b, 24b, 27b, 28a, 29a, 29b, 30b, 31a, 31b, 32a, 34a, 34b, 35a, 35b, 36b, 40a, 40b, 41b, 42a, 42b, 43b, 44a, 44b, 45b, 46b, 47b, 48a, 48b, 49a, 50a, 51a, 52b, 53b, 54b, 55b, 56, 57a, 57b, 58b, 59b, 60b 56 From the list of the classified data above, the writer could see that sometimes a datum answered more than one question. Since not all data were manageable to be analysed, the process of reducing was considered to be necessary.

3.4.6 Reducing

There are many techniques of how to reduce the data; but this research would reduce the classified data into 20. This was done based on the fact in the last column of Appendix A which explained the relationship or relevancy of each data to each other. However, the data for question number one were not reduced as all of them were used for the analysis by exposing the overall data. However, for question number two and three, the supporting data were reduced by only taking 20 and 18 of the classified data since there were too many repetitive data which revealed the same information. Another reason for reducing the data supporting at 2 and 3 was that the number of the data is too big. It needed more time and energy to analyse when they were not reduced. Therefore, to make it analysable, the writer reduced it until 18. The result of the reducing step would be demonstrated in the following table: Table 3.3 Simplified Data Question number Simplified Data Total 1 39 x 100 39 2 44 x 20 9 3 56 x 18 10 To continue the research activity, the data for question number one are ready to be analysed. However, for questions number two and three, 9 from 44 and 10 from 56, the data have to be selected. The next thing to do was selecting the data for question number two and three.
