CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the researcher presents the background of the study, the
statement of the problem, the purpose of the study, the significance of the study, the
scope and limitation and the definition of the key term. Each point is presented as
follows;

1.1 Background of the study
Human being have been familiar with arts in daily life. Among the arts are
dance, music, or literature. Eagleton (1996:1) says that literature is imaginative
writing in the sense of fiction writing which is not literally true. Literature is divided
into several subjects, they are poetry, drama, fiction and non fiction . In this thesis,
the writer focuses on a fiction, especially film.
Film is a multimedia narrative form based on a physical record of sounds and
moving pictures. Film is also a performed genre in the sense that it is primarily
designed to be shown in a public performance (Jahn, 2003).
Film is one of the literary works. By film we can learn literary work such as:
racism, struggle, rebellion, and personality changes. In this study, the writer will
focus on personality changes.

In the previous research, Fitriah (2009) investigated the personality changes of
the main character in “A Walk to Remember” novel. She found that this novel
stresses on the story of love between Landon Carter and Jamie Sullivan and how their

love ward off their background of life. In the light of the previous research and
especially in personality changes. The main character changes his personality because
of love. In this thesis, the writer wants to show the personality changes of the main
character in the novel. ”A Walk to Remember” is unforgettable novel, this novel
shows unusual love between the main characters. The main characters have different
backgrounds of family and life. Based on this fact there is a big distance between
them. So that, this novel is rich with the challenges from the main characters to
proof their love.
In this thesis, the writer is interested in analyzing “Despicable Me” film,
because this film has many viewers that already watched this film so this film become
well-known. Besides that, “Despicable Me” film shows the great villain who has bad
attitude, but never gives up to do something. " Despicable Me" characters are
whimsical and the film itself is action packed and sometimes really humorous. It

makes this film become popular in the world.
Film has some elements, such as plot, conflict, characterization, and subject
matter. In this thesis, the writer wants to show the personality changes of the main
character in the film.
Based on the reason above the writer is interested in this film, besides that
she is interesting to learn about personality, especially about a personality changes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Based on the background above, the writer of this thesis has three problems as
follows:

3

1. What are the changes in Gru’s personality?
2. What is the effect of the changes of Gru’s personality changes toward
himself?
3. What factors have influenced Gru’s personality changes?

1.3 Purpose of the Study
Concerning with problems above, the purposes of the study are:

1. To find out what are the changes of Gru in his personality.
2. To describe the effect of the changes of Gru’s personality toward himself.
3. To know the factors that influenced Gru’s personality changes.

1.4 Significance of the Study
The result of this study is expected to be an additional resource, adding and
enlarging the literature. And also the students of English Department are expected to
know and understand study about literature, she wants to make students interested to
watch film, because recently many students are more interested in watching film,
whereas film gives them more education and knowledge. In addition, it is to make the
students have a good understanding about literary works, especially on the
personality change.

1.5 Scope and Limitation
There are many topics that can be discussed in literature such as, plot,
conflict, characters or personality, theme, characterization, and subject matter.

4

Therefore, the writer scopes her research to focus on character and personality of

“Despicable Me” film, especially personality changes. Meanwhile, the limitation of
this study is the main character of “Despicable Me” film namely Gru.

1.6 Definition of Key Terms
The writer presents several definitions of key terms, which are related to the
study to make it more understandable.
1. Film is a motion picture which requires convention and has abilities to change the
setting quickly and sound effect dramatically, so that the viewers are satisfied
without sitting in front of the stage (Schmidt, Bogarad, and Crocket, 2006: 1418).
2. Personality Change is necessarily moving through development stages, each of
which is earmarked by a particular psychosocial crisis. Depending on the manner
in which people resolve these crises, their personality development will proceed
in either a favorable or an unfavorable direction (Erikson in Hjelle and Ziegler,
1992 : 25)
3. Despicable Me is the title of the film discussed in this research.
4. Gru is the main character in “Despicable Me” film as the subject of this study.
