The dewatering process following natural or artificial drainage can oxidize
pyrite from pyritic sediment. Oxidation of pyrite involve both chemical and
biological processes in soil. The bacteria involve in the process of pyrite oxidation
are Thiobacillus sp.; one of the111 is Thiobacilluferooxidans. T. jZrooxidans in soil of
pyritic sediment acts as biocatalyst for rapid oxidation of pyrite by cheinical process
in low pH condition. The oxidation of pyrite by bacteria T. ferooxidans is increase at
rate of 1o6 times compared with chemical reaction.
The purpose of the research is to study the population of T. firooxidans in soil
treated with drying and leaching included both conlbination with different of drying
time within the sane depth of water table and the depth of water table in sane drying
time.
