Greg Mortenson’s Affiliation Motivation

It can be concluded that Greg has a high achievement motivation. He works very hard, spending all his time to accomplish his goal and he also makes a better improvement in managing the CAI and in building school in Northern Pakistan.

4. Greg Mortenson’s Affiliation Motivation

Beck 354 says that the term affiliation refers to the motivation of someone to associates with others, whether they like the people or not. It indicates that affiliation consists of all kinds of relationship, not only because of liking or loving someone but also hating or confronting someone. Greg is friendly to everyone in Northern Pakistan. When he arrives in Kuardu, Changazi’s home village, he notices that a dozen young children stare at him. Then, Greg Mortenson walks toward the children and he says, “What are you?” the boy said shyly, extending his hand for mortenson to shake. The boys hand disappeared in Mortenson’s grasp. “I am Greg. I am good, he said. “I am Greg. I am good,” all of the children repeated as one. “No, I am Greg. What is your name?” he tried again. “No, I am Greg. What is your name,” the children repeated, giggling. Mortenson switched to Balti. “Min takpo Greg. Nga America in.” “My name is Greg. I come from America.” “Kiri min takpo in?” “What is your name?” The children clapped their hands, gleeful at understanding the Angrezi. Mortenson shoof each of their hand in turn, as the children introduced themselves 94. Greg’s friendliness is shown by greeting children in Changazi’s village. He makes a good relationship to all Northern Pakistan civilians. Greg is classified to have a good association with others and he tries to get closer to them. David C. McClelland Human Motivation 346-347 states whether or not it is exactly what people seek in interacting with others, certainly depriving individuals of the opportunity for interaction arouses in them what has been called the need for affiliation or the need to be with people. Greg Mortenson realizes that he needs others to support his goal. He builds a positive relation with another person and seeks good interaction by caring of them. Greg Mortenson shows his care by distributing what he has to Korphe’s villagers. Since Korphe is an isolated village, many people there have limited tools in order to hold up their daily life, and he gives something which will be useful for them. Greg Mortenson began distributing all he had. Small useful items like Nalgene bottles and flashlights were precious to the Balti, who trekked long distance to graze their animals in summer, and he handed them out to the members of Haji Ali’s extended family. To Sakina, he gave his camping stove, capable of burning the kerosene found in Balti village 30. Greg Mortenson also spends longer hours to climb the steep paths between Korphe’s homes. He cares of Korphe’s villagers by doing something he can to beat back the avalanche of need. Using tubes of antibiotic ointment Greg Mortenson treats open sores and lances and drains infected wounds. He also sets broken bones and does what he could with painkillers and antibiotics 31. In summary, Greg has an affiliation motivation in achieving his goal. He is friendly and he cares of everyone in Northern Pakistan. Besides, he also realizes that everyone needs one another. Therefore, he wants to be close to each other and to have good interaction with them to support him in building schools in Northern Pakistan. 50

A. Conclusions

This part discusses the conclusion of the analysis in chapter 4. There are two conclusions based on the analysis of the problems. The first problem finds out how Greg Mortenson is described in Three Cups of Tea.
