CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION In this globalization era, communication is a very important thing. With

  communication we should do interaction with another people that come from the corner of the world. In order to communicate with other people in global way, we have to capable of using the global language. In this case is English, now English is a global language that is used by many countries around the world, and English also an international language.

  English is a universal language and also an international language because English is used in every country. So, every person should learn about English.

  Today, learning about English is not hard as back then, because English is already studied by the student from the lowest level of educational institution (kindergarten/Playgroup) to the highest level of educational institution (university). In this job training report, I will discuss about diction that is used for short stories for the student in elementary school.

  1.1 Background of the Topic English can be learned in many ways. For the elementary school we can use a short story to give a lesson about English. A short story is effective to deliver lesson about English because the student in the elementary school interest to short story. With short story, we can give a lesson about English vocabulary from various word class categories such as noun, verb, adjective and the rest of categories.

  In the elementary school, language that is used for the students are different with the student from the junior high school or the senior high school.

  The language that is used is more simple and easy to understand. So, the student will not get confused or hardly to understand about the story and can take a lesson from what has been learned.

  1.2 Scope This job training report only discusses about diction in some short stories for the elementary school students.

  1.3 Objectives Other than to fulfill the job training course this report has some purpose: 1. To describe about diction in some short stories for the elementary school student.

2. To fulfill the job training report in the English Department of Indonesia University of Computer.

  1.4 Significant to Knowledge This report is expected to give explanation about the diction in a short story and analyze it with some theories to know about the diction for elementary school short story. This report also can be used as a reference for those who will take job training course in an institution.

  1.5 The Framework of the Theory In the framework of theory, the writer uses Enre’s theory about diction

  

“diksi atau pilihan kata adalah penggunaan kata-kata secara tepat untuk

mewakili pikiran dan perasaan yang ingin dinyatakan dalam pola suatu kalimat.”

  (Enre.1988: 101). It means that diction is the choice of suitable word to represent the idea and the feeling of the author.

  Keraff (2002: 24) has written some points of diction that are: "The choice of words or diction includes the meaning of the words which a. should be used to achieve an idea, how to form a grouping of the right words or used the phrase for an expression, and which style is best used in a situation." "Choice of words or diction is the ability to accurately distinguish shades b. of meaning from an idea that want to be conveyed, and the ability to find a suitable form (match) with the situation and the value of a sense of community owned group of listeners." c. "Appropriate and match choice of the words is only made possible by the

  mastering of a large number of vocabulary or the language. While the definition of vocabulary is a whole words that owned by a language. " These theory means that the diction must have an idea, and should use a group of the proper words by using the right expression for explain a situation.

  Use the different word to distinguish the meaning that writer wants to deliver to the reader and chooses the right word for the right explain the some actions. The author should choose the understandable words for the readers who do not have many vocabularies.

  1.6 Research Method The method that the writer uses in this job training report is descriptive method. In this method the theory will be described with some explanations.

  According to Dawson (2002) said,

  “Descriptive research attempts to describe

systematically a situation, problem, phenomenon, service or program, or provides

information about, say, living condition of a community, or describes attitudes

towards an issue.

  The data is collected from the book “Kumpulan Cerpen Bahasa Inggris”. This job training report will describe about diction in case of diction in a short story for elementary school student.

  1.7 Place and Time This job training was held in Balai Bahasa Provinsi Jawa Barat at Jl.

  Sumbawa no. 11, Bandung, West Java. It was conducted from July 15, 2013 to September 6, 2013. The job training is started from 09.00 to 15.00 every weekday (Monday-Friday)

CHAPTER II THE GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF BALAI BAHASA PROVINSI JAWA BARAT

  2.1 Profile of Balai Bahasa Provinsi Jawa Barat According to article 36 of the state constitution, the official language of

  Indonesia is Indonesian. Based on that constitution, Indonesia government tries to preserve and develop Indonesian language and local language. Then the Indonesia government creates an institution, the name of the institution is “Pusat Bahasa” (previously, in the 1966 it names was “Lembaga Bahasa dan Budaya”, then it was changed in 1969 to “Lembaga Bahasa Nasional”. Then, finally in 1999 the name was changed to “Pusat Bahasa”).

  This institution is under the National Education Department. “Pusat Bahasa” has a main task to develop Indonesian Language and Indonesian literature and also local language and local literature. Considering the area that must be covered is whole Indonesia country, “Pusat Bahasa” has built many of “Balai Bahasa” in each Indonesia provinces.

  In West Java there is “Balai Bahasa Provinsi Jawa Barat”, this institution has a role as technical implementer unit in National Education Department under the “Pusat Bahasa”. In doing its task, technically and administratively, ”Balai Bahasa” is guided by “Pusat Bahasa” and has responsibility to the head of “Pusat Bahasa”. Meanwhile “Pusat Bahasa” has a role as executive of particular task from National Education Department. In fulfill its task; “Pusat Bahasa” is fully responsible to the General Secretary of National Education Department.

  The tasks of Balai Bahasa Provinsi Jawa Barat are to research, develop and guide the development of language and literature in the regional area.

  The functions of “Balai Bahasa” are: a.

  Implement the technical policy of “Pusat Bahasa” in guiding and developing Indonesian language and literature.

  b.

  Formulate and implement technical policy in guiding and developing Indonesian language and literature in regional area.

  c.

  Cooperate with province, city, and district government.

2.2 Job Position

  In Balai Bahasa Provinsi Jawa Barat, the writer was placed at Language and Literature Assessment Division. At Language and Literature Assessment Division, the writer worked as an author of the short stories for the elementary school. The writer has a job to create a book about short stories collection.

  2.3 Responsibility During the job training In Balai Bahasa Provinsi Jawa Barat, the writer has a task to write some short stories in order to make a book productl. The writer must fulfill that book product according to the mentor guidance. The writer also has a responsibility to report about the book product to the mentor in the institution. .

CHAPTER III THE DESCRIPTION OF THE TOPIC

  3.1 The Process of Making The Short Stories Book Collection The process of making the short stories book collection is begun with making the character of the story, and then decides the topic of each short story.

  After that, the writer starts to arrange the short story.

  Objection of making this short story is to give a lesson for the elementary student, so the writer is choosing the vocabulary that suitable for the elementary student. This is should be done because if the vocabulary that is used to make this short story is not suitable for the elementary school student, it will be hard to understand by them.

  3.2 Source of The Data The source of the data is taken from a book that has written by the writer when did job trai ning. The title of the book is “Kumpulan Cerpen Bahasa

  Inggris”. The book contains several short stories for the student of elementary school.

  3.3 Data Collections To make an analysis in this job training report, the writer needs some data.

  The data is taken from the “Kumpulan Cerpen Bahasa Inggris”.

  For the first data is: “Then the students introduced their name to the teacher. The class was so cheerful and the students were glad. Their first day in school was so

  interesting. The school bell rang, and then the students tidied up their

  table. They prepared for the class break, but Joni and his friends were still in the class.”(Pages: 3) And the next data is: “Class condition was so calm. Wind through pass the window. It was making Joni so enjoyed to listens the lesson. Now was math lesson. For other class math was a scary subject, but not in Joni class. The math teacher, Mr. Henry knew how to make this subject interesting.”(Pages: 5) And then another data is: “Doni was embarrassed when Andika said that. As an Indonesian people we must respect our country and don’t look down for it. How it looks like it’s still our country.” (Pages: 12)

  Then the other data is: “Doni was not a neat person. He used to put his tools everywhere as he likes. So, when he wanted to go to school he will look for it again. That is happen because he forgot where he put his tools.” (Pages; 15) And for the last data is: “The match continued again with kick off from other team. The other team wanted to score more goals. They kept attacking

  Joni’s team but Joni’s team defend was so good and disciplined. They didn’t let other team scored to their goal again.” (Pages; 26)

  3.4 Discussion According the theories, the diction is the choice of words includes the meaning of the words which should be used to achieve an idea, how to form a grouping of the right words or used the phrase for an expression, and which style is best used in a situation and the ability to accurately distinguish shades of meaning from an idea that want to be conveyed, and the ability to find a suitable form (match) with the situation and the value of a sense of community owned group of listeners.

  As we know, the book is for the student of elementary school. Then the diction of the book must suitable for them. In that book the writer uses the simple words that can easy understand by the elementary students. The writer also uses the right words to make a phrase and the sentence for the short story. For the structure of the sentence in the short story, the writer uses simple sentence and compound sentence. There are not found a complex sentence in the narration of the short story.

  For the diction, the writer of the book uses some simple vocabulary like

  

interesting, scary, embarrassed, look down, neat, and attacking. We know that

  many of vocabularies that can represent the same meaning with those word. For example, word interesting has many synonyms like exciting, attractive, and

  

appealing, but the word that easier to understand by the elementary school student

  is the word interesting because it is more familiar and often used in the English lesson for elementary school.

  In this following there are the words which are having synonym to deliver a meaning.

  The words in left column are used by the author in his short story book. The writer might think those words are suitable to be use in the short story for the elementary school. The synonym words in the right column have same meaning with the words in the left column but the writer prefers to use the words in the left column for the book. If we read a novel, those words in the right column often use for a novel; they have more representative meaning to support story in novel because novel has more complex story and plot than the story for the students in elementary school.

CHAPTER IV CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

  4.1 Conclusion In order to make a book, we should know about our target reader. It helps us to decide about the content of the book that will be written. Beside that we also choose the diction of the book because it will help the target reader understand the content of the book easier. In this case, that is book for the elementary school students. Generally the elementary school students do not have large number of vocabularies, and then the writer of the book should use the simple vocabulary and does not use a complex structure for the sentences.

4.2 Suggestion

  In this job training report, the writer discusses about the diction in writing short story for the elementary school. This job training report needs some critics to make the writer more comprehensive in the next research.

  For the suggestion, the writer has some suggestions for the student who will take the job training course that are: a.

  Prepare yourself for job training course, by choosing an institution to do a job training there. b. You should find the problem that you want to research in your job training report and do your best in your job training report.

c. Discuss your research carefully and correctly to make the reader b.

  understand about your job training report properly.

d. For the English Department the writer only suggests to give more

  subjects for helps the students who do their job training report. So the students will be ready for the job training course.
