ABSTRACT
MUHAMMAD JURAID WATTIHELUW. Effects of saga (Abrus precatorius
L.), sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata Ness) and pare (Momordica charantia L.)
leaves extracts on differential leucocyte cell, Fe, Zn, and testosterone levels in turtledove
(Geopelia striata L.) plasma. Under supervisions of Wiranda G. Piliang and Lulu
Lusianti Fitri.
Turtledove is a seed eater bird species and most of male bird emit song. In order
to produce song quality, many breeders supply good diet added with herbal supplements
such as leaves of saga, sambiloto, and pare.
The aim of this research was to study the influence of saga, sambiloto and pare
leaves extracts on differential leucocyte cell, Fe and Zn content in blood plasma, and
testosterone levels that influenced the song quality of turtledove (Geopelia Striata).

Twenty five birds (aged 4-6 months old ) were reared in individual cages for 10 weeks.
The birds were divided into 5 treatment groups. Each treatment group was divided into 5
replications with one bird in each replicate. Five diet treatments were : diets A (a control
diet), B (a control diet + 0.018 gram extract of saga leaf), C (a control diet + 0.018 gram
extract of sambiloto leaf), D (a control diet + 0.018 gram extract of pare leaf), E (a
control diet + Combination of (0.006 gram extract of saga leaf + 0.006 gram extract of
sambiloto leaf + 0.006 gram extract of pare leaf)). The parameters observed were feed
consumption and nutrient consumption, differential leucocyte cell counts, iron (Fe), zinc
(Zn) level in the blood plasma, testosterone levels and song duration (syllable duration
and duration between syllable). The results showed that the treatments had no effect on
diet consumption, though birds in treatment D consumed more diet than other diets. Birds
in treatment C showed the highest consumption among other treatments. There were no
significant differences on differential leucocyte cell counts, the levels of zinc and
testosteron in blood plasma. Moreover, both parameters on song durations (syllable
duration and duration between syllable ) did not differ significantly. However, the results
showed there were similar indications that extracts of pare leaf enhanced the levels of
zinc and testosterone as well as the birds song duration. It was also showed that Fe
content in the blood plasma on treatment B (the addition of 0.018 gram extract of saga
leaf) increased significantly (P
