CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents background of the study, statement of problems,
purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of
key terms.

1.1 Background of study
According to Petty and Jensen (1980:17), language is all the words and
sentences we use as we talk with one another, or language is used as we communicate
verbally with another.As we know, language is aimportant tool for communication
with other people,and each country has its own language, one of international
language is English. It is used by million people around the world that coming from
different race, culture and region. Because of it, we have to learn as a second
language.
In learning English, the learners must be able to speak, listen, read and write.
It is very important because, person can be called bilingual when they master four
skill that involve speaking, listening, reading and writing. And as we know, one of
language aspect is vocabulary, because language is arranged from sentences and
itconsists of words. According to Hatch &Brown(in Fajarianti, 2010), vocabulary is a
list or set of words for a particular language, or a list or a set of word that individual
speaker of a language might use.So, every people should havemany vocabularies for
communicating, it will also help them in arranging sentences.

The English vocabulary hasbeen introduced since the student at the early age.
Indonesian people today start to learn English beginning from elementary schoolll
even from kindergarten and pre-school. It is different with the past, they started to
learn it beginning from junior high school, senior high school or university. In
elementary schools English lesson is given from the first grade, because learning
English at the young age is better than older age. This assumption is supported
byJoan beck, in Mufida (2005:2) who states the early age children are very
enthusiastic in learning a language either the mother tongue or foreign language. So,
it is easy for them to learn the sound system of the foreign language
In teaching vocabulary, especially for young learners,the teachers have to
know their students characteristic. Because, every studenthas different characteristic,
they also have different thought, feeling and will. So, teachers have to understand
what their students want. Not only that, but they have to be active in teaching. More
over, they must have special skills, such as easy going, patient, pleasant, relax,
creative in delivering the lesson.According to Sabilah,(2004:20) being a teacher of
young learners need special skill, besides having sufficient English proficiency,
young learner teacher has to be active, creative, helpful and open. Therefore, teachers
should know how the way to teach them, especially in using media. Because teaching
using media will give effect quickly. For example, the students will be more active in
following the teacher’s explanationthe students are easier in catching the lesson.
Then, they will become relax and join the class, and the other effect is it will give
them motivation and make them more interested in study, especially vocabulary.

Teaching vocabulary must use special ways in order to increase the student
mastery toward English, and one of the ways is using media. Besides the teachers’
ability, the use of media can also support the language teaching to young learners and
the teaching learning process can be more effective and fun. Heinich,
Molenda&Russel (1990) states that media is a channel of communication, derived
from latin word for “between” the term refers” to anything that carries information
between a source and a receiver. Briggs (1979) said that teaching media as “the
physical means of conveying instructional content…….books, films, videotapes, etc.
Meanwhile, the media is not only tools, it is something that possibly students get
knowledge.Gerlach& Ely (1980:244) states that, “a medium, conceived is any person,
material or even that establish condition which enable the learner to acquire
knowledge, skill, and attitude”. It means that media is not only tools like television,
radio, slide, etc. but it consists of people or human as learner or source. It also can be
some activity, such as discussion, seminar, simulation, etc. that can add knowledge,
experience and change attitude of students. So, it is clear that one of the best ways to
teach is teaching by using media. Because, it will help the teacher in teaching process,
especially in teaching vocabulary for young learners. Because teaching vocabulary is
not easy, it needs long time to learners remember many words.
Based on the explanation above, the researcher is interested in investigating
the teaching media for teaching vocabulary to the first grade students of elementary
school at PermataJingga Global elementary school inMalang because , the first grade
students do not have many vocabularies yet.If they learn vocabulary earlier, they will
be easy to memorize and speak in English. It will happen, if the teacher uses the

appropriate media for teaching vocabulary. The function of media is to help and
develop the technique of teaching, both English skills (reading, writing, listening,
speaking) and English components (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, etc.).This
study tries to specify only on the vocabulary mastery, because the children will get
knowledge of English strongly by enlarging their vocabulary. The writer hopes this
study will be meaningful in giving information and description of teaching media.
And will help the teacher in improving the qualities of teaching, especially teaching
vocabulary. Besides, this study can be used as source of information for the next
researcher to develop this study.

1.2Statement of problem
Based on the background of the study, the research problems are formulated
as follows:
1. What are the media used in teaching vocabulary on first grade at
PermataJingga Global elementary school in Malang?
2. How does the teacher apply the media used in teaching vocabulary on first
grade at Permatajingga Global elementary school in Malang?
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages applying media in teaching
vocabulary on first grade at PermataJingga Global elementary school in
Malang?

1.3 Purpose of the study
Based on the problem above, the purpose of the study are:
1. To describe the media used in teaching vocabulary on first grade at
PermataJingga Global elementary school in Malang.
2. To explain howthe teacher applies the media used in teaching vocabulary
on first grade at PermataJingga Global elementary school in Malang is.
3. To know the advantages and disadvantages media used in teaching
vocabulary on first grade at PermataJingga Global elementary school in
Malang.

1.4 Significance of the study
The researcher hopes that this study can give more creation in teaching
English in elementary schools, especially for vocabulary and give many advantages
for other people who are related to this study. First, English teachers can create their
ability in teaching process, and they can increase their teaching vocabulary by using
media, more creative in making other media for teaching vocabulary. Second, the
students will be more interested, enjoy and be fun in learning English.

1.5Scope and limitation
The research is focused on study of media in teaching vocabulary, and the
limitations of this study are kinds of media, advantages and disadvantages of media.

1.6 Definition of key terms
1. Teaching is showing or helping someone to learn how to do something,
giving instructions, guiding in the study of something, providing with
knowledge causing to know or understand (Brown, 1994).
2. Media is the media that is used to make communication between teacher
and students in teaching learning process at school more effective
(Hamalik,1996).
3. Vocabulary is a total number of words make up a language. Vocabulary
refers to all words in the whole language or the words and phrase used in
particular variety (Nation, 1990).
4. Apply: put into service, make a work or employ for a particular purpose or
for its inherent, to make use of as relevant, suitable or pertinent; to apply a
theory to a problem (www.dictionary.reference.com).
