1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Background of the Study

In some media often found many cases pertaining to psychiatric person. One of the most common in the community was sexual harassment. Sexual abuse lately too often end up with a tragic death. In addition, sexual harassment too often leave deep trauma of victims. Abroad, the trauma is known as “wallflower”. Wallflower is the trauma caused by an event which is very pressing the psychical of person, so it can reduce the sense of socialization and hard to adapt. Has no friends and never confident was one impact of trauma wallflower. However, the trauma is very likely to be cured. Many volunteers work together with the Government set up various organizations to rescue and heal the sufferers wallflower. Things like this also I found in the novel The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen chobosky. The Novel gives the message that the sufferer”wallflower” is curable only if they want to open up to others, accept the fact and trying to forget the past.

This story begins when Charlie Kelmeckis entered the new school year as a high school student. He felt very scared because he has no friends. His good friend Michael died a month before they enter high school. Michael reportedly died of suicide. Michael is the only friend that Charlie believes and feels able to rely on him than to his own family. He started to write all the events he experienced on a daily basis in the form of a letter addressed to his friend. At school, he entered

(16)

theSsophomore Class guided by Mr. Callahan. In this class Charlie first became acquainted with Patrick. Patrick is a senior class that follows the repetition in the subjects taught by Mr. Callahan.

He became close to Patrick since their meeting in football match in their school. At that meeting, he was introduced to Sam, also a senior in his school and she is a step-sister of Patrick. Charlie falls in love with Sam at first sight he saw Sam. Since that meeting, too, they got closer because Charlie felt Patrick and Sam does not like other senior who like to disturb new students, they are very open and good to him. Charlie often invited to join students-grade repetition club by Patrick. At the club, he found new friends like Mary Elizabeth, Craig, Peter and also a new experience. He went partying at night and help them fill out the event at Ricky Horror Picture Show. By following each of the events and activities with students-grade repetition he was getting close to Sam and begin to love her more. But Charlie never dare to tell Sam about his feeling because Sam is dating with Craig.

On the other hand, there is a woman who secretly loved Charlie. She is Mary Elizabeth. She is always kind and considerate to Charlie. When Sam is busy dating craig, Mary was getting closer to Charlie. Charlie finally dating Mary because Charlie isn't able to deny Mary. Charlie is getting confused and sad because he had pretend to love Mary, but in fact he just loved Sam. A few months later Sam broke up with Craig because Craig has been having an affair. Patrick invited Charlie, Mary and Peter to their (Patrick-Sam)’s home to entertain Sam. They gathered in the room and

(17)

encourage Sam. They eventually choose to play the game Truth or Dare to break the mood. Charlie got the first turn. Patrick challenge Charlie to kiss the most beautiful girl in the room. He spontaneously kissed Sam who happened sit next to him. Mary was shocked to see him, she was very angry and slapped him. Mary also rebuked Sam and accused her of being a traitor. They fight violently and Sam drove out Charlie from their homes.

Their relationship became difficult until one day Charlie save Patrick. Charlie beat up some seniors who mocked Patrick as “nothing”. He hit them very strong till them sprawl and Sam saw the incident. After the incident, Sam find Charlie and talks to him. This good opportunity was taken by Charlie to apologize. Sam finally forgive him. They are close again since the incident. At the end of the semester, all seniors including Sam and Patrick are busy for graduation examination and examination at some universities because they will continue their education into college. This makes Charlie realized Sam was going to leave him. And it became real when Sam passed the entrance exam to a College in New York. Sam preparing everything to move to New York.

The night before Sam leaves, Charlie came to Sam’s home. He ventured to declare his love. When Charlie expresses it, Sam was very surprised and happy. Charlie is also very happy that Sam accepts his love. They start kissing and intercourse as husband and wife that night in Sam’s house. However, when all things were not too far away, Charlie felt inner urge in him when Sam started to touch it. He

(18)

encouraged Sam suddenly, Sam felt shocked and guilty thought Charlie was not ready with such a thing. Sam tried to get close to him and find out what was happening but Charlie is getting weird. Charlie cried loudly. Sam does not allow Charlie back to his home with that situation. That night, Charlie dreaming weird things about his aunt Helen.

The next day, Sam is leaving for New York. Charlie felt so sad. The inner turmoil last night going on for the longest time. He is disgusted with himself. He returned home with very critical mental. Charlie found suicide in front of the TV naked by her parents. Before Charlie lost a lot of blood, he was immediately taken to the hospital by his parents. The doctors immediately help Charlie in hospital and provide him with an intensive care until he can pass through the crytis period. He had amnesia for one week.

A psychiatrist comes to Charlie and open up his mind to tell the psychiatrist what he fells and thinks about. Charlie cries a lot while he tells the psychiatrist what had happened to him. He tells the psychiatrist that he got a sexual harassment from his beloved aunty named aunt Helen. Psychiatrists has promised to help Charlie through this all. The psychiatrist tells all the incident to his parents. They were very sad and angry at themselves because they never know about that incident until a dozen years. Psychiatrist, Charlie's parents, friends and family of Charlie finally helped recovery. Charlie eventually cured and he returned to live a new life.

R.J. Rees (1973 ; 106) “Novel is a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length in which characters and actions representative of real life are potrayed in a plot of more or less complexity.” Fananie (2001 : 93) says, “the plot is the construction which is made to read on of a sequence of events that are logically and chronologically related , and caused or experienced by actors.”

The approach used by the writer to describe about the Plot that was used in this novel is “intrinsic approach “ Wellek and Warren (1972: 139) that retrieve data only from the text, such as read the text carefully , sort information of plot , character, theme, background, actions and make summary and conclusion .

1.2 The Problem of Study

In the Novel “The Perks of being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky the writer will discuss:

a. What is the plot that pictured in the novel the perks of being a wallflower?

b. What is the conflict in plot?

1.3 Scope of Study

Many aspects can be discussed in this novel, but the writer is interested in discussing the Plot (the plot) that is used in this novel.

(20)

1.4 Purpose of Study

The purposes of the writer in making this paper are:

- To find out the plot pictured in The Perks of being a Wallflower’s Novel - To find out the structure of plot and where the conflict is exist.

1.5 Method of Study

The author uses the method of “library research” writing this paper. The first stage of the writer reads the whole story in this novel to understand the story. After understanding the whole story of the novel, the writer reads and searches data in a library to get information about the Plot. The second stage is to sort the data that has been collected. The final stage is to analyze such data by connecting it with the story of the novel.

1.6 Significance of Study

To analyze and to get understanding about one element of novel there is Plot through The Perks of Being A Wallflower’s novel.

(21)

2. UNDERSTANDING OF PLOT

R.S Gwynn (2002:7) says that plot can be defined as a story’s sequence of incidence, arranged in dramatic order. One is tempted to insert the word chronological but doing so will exclude many stories that depart from strict ordering of events. Plot is one of the parts element that built the novel from inside, known as intrinsic element. Plot is not only used in novels but also in drama and some other literary work. There are many theories about the Plot and its kind R.S Gwynn introduces several types of Plots and refers to the theory of Aristotle (384-322 b.c). They are; Unfied Plot, Episodic Plot, Triangle Plot, Quest plot, and Transformation Plot.

Unfied plot is realistic story, includes a central character and action, and takes place in a single place, usually during a short span of time, such as an hour, few hours, a day. The second type of plot that a writer can craft is the episodic plot. The story has setting central character, conflict, takes place over a much longer period of time. Often the author of novel itself will use the technique of “Flashback” to provide background details or to tell the story.

The third type of plot is triangle plot. Triangle plot is a love story involving three people. The fourth is Quest plot. Quest Plot which is unfied around group of characters on a journey and known as adventure story. The last is Transformation

(22)

Plot. Transformation Plot, in which a weak or physically unattractive charater changes radically in the course of the story.

R.S Gwynn (2002:8) says that there are some techniques that might be used by the writer to develop the plot in novel. They are Flashback and Foreshadowing. The difference of flashback and foreshadowing are:

Flashback describes something that happened before the story began. Flashback is just used to increase understanding of current event or character. For instance, if the reader learns that something happened to a character when he or she was younger, it might help to explain why he or she just behaved in a cratin way in the story.

Foreshadowing gives clues to something that will happen later in the story. Foreshadowing is used to help the reader predict what might happen, or to encourage the reader to make a guess. It often happens fairly early in a story, and is frequently used at the end of a chapter, or even at the end of one book in a series

Types of plot above are part of some sort plot. However, the types that mention above is the kind of plot that is often found in novel. To analyze plot in novel, R.S Gwynn also provide and explain some of the steps that called element of plot. They are ; Exposition, Complication/Rising Action, Conflict, Moment Of Crisis, Climax, and Falling Action.

(23)

A. Exposition

Exposition is the step where the reader was given essential information in a novel that related to the characters by the author. Usually, in this step author will introduce the main character and another character that play a role in the novel. In “Fiction” book by R.S Gwynn explains that exposition divided into four parts. They are;

a. Exposition Who

Exposition “Who” is the part where the author introduces the main character and other characters. Introducing and explaining the characters that play in a novel, there are three things that must be mention, they are :

b. Exposition What

Exposition “What” is the part where the author explains what event makes the main character meet other characters that also an important character in that novel because they might be give an influence to the main character’s life.

c. Exposition When

Exposition “When” is the part where the author gives information about a statement of time when the main character meet with other characters. Sometimes, in some novels these information not mentioned directly by the author. It was because

(24)

the author wants the reader make their own prediction about the time, so it becomes interesting. The novel like this may be use One day, Last Month, etc.

d. Exposition Where

Expositions where is the stage where writer notify explanation where the main character meet with another character and make them know each other

B. Rising Action

Complication is the appearance of some circumstance or event that shakes

up the stable situation and begins the rising action of the story. Rising action in a story may be either external and internal, or a combination of the two. A stroke fortune such as illness or accident which affects a character is a typical example of an external rising action, a problem that the character cannot ignore, while an internal rising action might not be immediately apparent, the result of a character’s deep-seated uncertainties, dissatisfactions, and fears.

C. Conflict

Conflict is event when between two characters or more have different personalities or goals.

D. Moment of Crisis

Moment of Crisis is points in the story where a resolution of the complication momentarily seems at hand but quickly disappears.

(25)

E. Climax

Climax is the greatest tension in a novel. In this part, the reader will give much and special attention to what will happen next to the main character after climax.

F. Falling Action

Falling action is event in the story that tells about what will happen to the main character after climax and how is his/her life after the climax with other character that influence her/his life. This is the part that close to the end of story.

G. Resolution

The final part of a plot is the resolution. The literally refers to the untying of a knot, and we might compare the emotional release of a story’s ending with a piece of cloth that has been twisted tighter and tighter and is then untwisted as the action winds down. The resolution returns the characters to another stable situation. A story’s resolution may be termed either closed or open. A Closed resolution ties up everything neatly and explains all unanswered questions the reader might have. On the other hand, an open resolution leaves us with a few tantalizing questions.

(26)

3. THE ANALYSIS OF PLOT PICTURED IN “THE PERKS

OF BEING A WALLFLOWER’’

In analyzing the plot of the novel the perks of being a wallflower, the writer uses the theory who described by R.S. Gwynn in his book “fiction”. In this regard, he explained that the plot consists of 3 parts which are made up of several sub-sections, namely:

Climax Moment of crisis

Conclict Falling action

Exposition Rising Action Resolution

3.1 Exposition

Exposition is the first stage in a story that introduced the who, what, when, where the composition of the story. “Who” to introduce the main characters, “what” to explain what makes them the main characters meet, “when” to explain when they meet or meet, and “where” to explain where they met. According to the explanation of R.S Gwynn, the opening story in The novel “The Perks of Being A Wallflower” can be referred to in medias res because it preceded by some action.

(27)

Exposition “Who” in novel the perks of being a wallflower is quite simple because the main character introduces his status in his family directly on page 5:

………”there are three of us and I’m the youngest. My brother is the oldest. My sister is the middle………my mom and my dad……….”

Before introducing other characters, the main character, Charlie Kelmeckis introduces his moral character that expressly in several different pages;

Hal 6 :…………..”I’m really afraid of going…..’ Hal 7:………” I’m started to cry”

Hal 8:………”I’m pretty emotional” Hal 9:…………”I like to read book twice”

Hal 10:…………”I like eating with my fingers and off napkins….”

From the explanation above, we can see that the character of Charlie in this story is very cowardly, whiny (because the phrase “I’m started to cry” often mentioned in several page), and also a little strange because he does not have the same habits with the habits of her family.

Then the story continues and introduces other characters namely Patrick. Charlie explains the status of Patrick in this story. Patrick is a senior students in his school who follow some grade repetition and make it into same class with Charlie at sophomore class taught by Mr. Callahan;

Hal 13 : ”well I’m in shop class…………. There is a guy in shop class named “nothing”………when his real name is Patrick” Charlie said

(28)

In this story, Charlie also introduces the character of Patrick, we can see from this statement bellow.

Hal 19 : “he’s a very friendly person”………Nothing(Patrick) do a very funny impersonation of your teacher”

Patrick is very friendly to everybody, he likes to make things weird in the class that made other students laughed.

In the next story Charlie wrote his experiences meeting with Sam. Sam is the step-sister of Patrick. Charlie tells about Sam with little bit of amazing and love sense.

Hal 19 : “Sam has brown hair and very very pretty green eyes.” “Sam had a very nice smile

Here also described the status of Patrick and Sam. They are brothers. They are very closer each other. It makes Charlie proud to know both of them. They are friendly and really unlike other seniors who like to do bad things to the new students.

Hal 20 : “we’re brother and sister,” Patrick said, still laughing. “that’s Sam explained that they were actually stepsister and stepbrother since Patrick’s dad married Sam’s mom.

Exposition “where” in novel “The perks of being wallflower” also told very clearly. Charlie, Sam and Patrick met during football matches in their school. Even though Charlie had met with Patrick before, but they have not made a close

(29)

interaction until they met at a football game. At the time, Charlie came alone and Patrick sat next to Sam. Patrick calls Charlie and encouraged him to join them.

“I went to the high school football game the other day, and I don’t understand why…… I was just kind of watching people, seeing who was in love and who was just hanging around, and I saw that kid I told you about…. Nothing(Patrick) was there at the football game”

Exposition When can be seen that the main character meets other characters in time indication “the other day” in Pages 18. However, it can be estimated that word “the other day” is the third weeks Charlie in school. In the novel, Charlie writes a letter on 29 September and gave a time indicator “about last two weeks” and a story they met was written in a letter dated 6 October. Charlie writes down too that they met after few weeks he in new school.

Exposition What is told about what thing makes the main character meet with other characters. it is because they study in school and they have a senior-junior relationships as often ordinary students. Sam and Patrick is a senior of Charlie and Charlie is a new students. In addition, Patrick mentioned was the student who has a repetition class in Mr. Callahan class and he became a classmate of Charlie.

From the analysis stage of the Exposition above it can be concluded that the early part of the story in the Novel “The Perks Of Being Wallflower”, the author (Stephen Chbosky) explains or tells the exposition parts “who”, “when”, “where”, and “what”, clearly and sequentially in the same few pages.

(30)

3.2 Rising Action

The Rising Action of the novel “the perks of being a wallflower” is begun when Charlie join to the students grade repetition club. Charlie started following all the activities that is often performed by the club. Among them are partying, filling the performances in the Rocky Horror Show and do drugs. Charlie felt this group was accepted him and he enjoyed this situation. Charlie often tells about other seniors who he didn't like to them, though they are also Charlie’s senior but they are never angry to him. Charlie also returned home in a drunk condition and passed out on the snow pile ever after he wore a new type of drug. But, her parents never know it because Charlie himself was never told it.

“Charlie..let’s join us to the party, I will give u some new things that u never heard before..maybe..” Patrick said to Charlie.( The Perks Of Being A Wallflower: 25)

In this case it can be concluded that the rising action begins to appear when Charlie join the student repetition club and he began to have problems that triggered the emergence of a new conflict.

3.3 Conflict

Conflict found in novel “the perks of being a wallflower” has a different conflict. The first conflict occurred when Charlie kissed Sam in front of Mary on the game Truth or Dare while Charlie was still date Mary.

(31)

………..Patrick suggested we all play Truth Or Dare……..Patrick give me dare

….“kiss the prettiest girl in the room on the lips”…..By the time I had knelt down in front of Sam and kiss her, the silence was unbearable. Mary Elizabeth Walked quickly out of the room and into bathroom…………

Mary was very angry and felt hurt. She also felt that Sam has betrayed him. In fact, Sam didn't know this could happen. Sam never knew Charlie liked him. Charlie also never tried to be honest to Mary and Sam until this incident happen.

…..Sam followed Mary, but before she completely left the room, she turned to me and said serious and dark, “what the fuck is wrong with you?”……..

…..I felt terrible…just terrible…….

After this conflict, Mary and Sam against Charlie. Charlie felt so guilty but Patrick suggested him not return until situation calm down. Charlie was away from them for a few weeks and still feel very guilty mainly to Mary because he knows Mary very sincerely loves him.

The next conflict occurs to the main when he defended Patrick. At lunch, several football athelete’s students mocked Patrick and called him “nothing”. Charlie felt growled. He finally does not know why he dare beat up the students who mocked Patrick. Charlie beats them all at once. Charlie feels very strong because he feels very upset to them. Finally, Charlie's parents called to school because of the incident. He made the students entered the hospital.

(32)

“this is the first time I dare to fight with the seniors….. but do you know, that’s only because I don’t like they called Patrick with “nothing”. He is my bestfriend and it’s like something hurt inside. I hit them, then I saw they cry”

Patrick wrote down all the things in his letter to his friend and felt very angry at himself. he felt guilty because he had beat his senior and it will make it threatened in schools. he feels embarrassed because he makes his parents were called to school because of his mistake.

It can be concluded that, the conflict appeared a little long almost in the middle of the story. This is because rising action take a longer part. This can be seen from the number of pages used in telling writers the rising action. And the conflicts happen a few times so it is very pressing the mental of main character. Conflict occurs not entirely because of the behavior of the main character but because other figures considered important in the main character’s life.

3.4 Moment Of Crisis

Moment of crisis in this novel happens when Charlie finally dare to tell Sam about what he felt to her in last night Sam stay in that city. Sam is going to go to New York to continue her education to college and will leave Charlie alone. That night, Sam kissing Charlie and at that moment, suddenly Charlie feels experiencing inner conflict from his past memories that make his “wallflower” trauma arise. He finally pushed Sam and bolted from her.

(33)

……..when she touched me, I stopped her… “you’re not ready?” she asked..

I nodded. But that wasn’t it. I didn’t know what it was.. You’re white as a sheet, Charlie. Do you need some water? No. I don’t know.” I started to cry hardly

The inner turmoil about his past continues always haunt him. He began to feel very uncomfortable and feel like crazy. He cries for something he did not know what, until he fell asleep. He felt he dreamed about something like real happen to him. But, he believes about that dreamed and always thought about it.

…..when I fall asleep, I had this dream. My bother and my sister and I were watching television with my aunt Helen. Everything was in slow motion. The soun was thick.
