ABSTRACT

Our Mutual Friend tells the readers about John Harmon as the major character who
faces many problems in his life because of his father’s will. The aim of this thesis is to

analyze intrinsic aspects such as characters, conflict, and setting also to find the central
theme of the story. The writer uses two methods to analyze this novel; those are library
research and structural approach. Structural approach focuses on analyzing intrinsic
aspects, especially characters, conflict, setting, and theme. After analyzing several
intrinsic aspects, the writer concludes that the theme of the novel is greed of money
brings someone into the egoism, that money can change someone’s characteristic from
good to bad. Money can bring bad change in people’s life.
