( A Descriptive Study on the Students of MAN 1 Purwokerto in Academic
year 2014-2015)

The aim of this study was: to find out the correlation between students mastery of simple past tense and students ability in writing narrative text. It used a correltion research which was conducted of students in MAN 1 Purwokerto in academic year 2014/2015.The research method was correlation study. The writer used random sampling to get the sample. The technique of collecting the data was taken from mastery simple past tense and writing test. After the data collected, the test result was analyzed by Pearson product moment correlation formula, and then made conclussion.The result of this study showed that there was a correlation between students mastery of simple past tense and writing ability in narrative text. The students ability of simple past tesnse was in good category. The result of Pearson product moment test proved the correlation between students mastery of simple past tense and students ability of writing narrative text. The result of computation showed that r0 was higher that r-table (0.812>0.316) in the level degree of significance 5%. It means that the correlation of students mastery simple past tense and writing ability belong to moderate. The research could be concluded that there was correlation between students mastery of simple past tense and students ability of writing narrative text. xii
