This study aims at (1) investigating the quality of “When English Rings
A Bell” textbook to teach reading skill for seventh grade students of Junior High
School, and (2) developing supplementary reading materials for seventh grade
students of SMP Negeri in Surakarta. This study is categorized as a Research and
Development study. There are 2 stages in conducting this study. The first is
exploration which consists of library research, field research and need analysis.
The second is model development which consists of prototype design, expert
judgment, and prototype try out.
Before developing the materials, the existing course book “When English
Rings a Bell” (WERB) for seventh grade has been evaluated by using a check list
of textbook evaluation proposed by Cunningsworth (1995). The results of the
textbook evaluation of WERB for seventh grade are supported by the results in
the need analysis. The results of both revealed that WERB has some weaknesses
especially for teaching reading skill: 1) the reading text are very limited and the
range of vocabulary were too simple, 2) the activities do not reflect the stages in
scientific approach as suggested by the government, 3) the materials do not
support the indicator of reading. From the weaknesses mentioned, the teacher
always has to add some additional reading materials from other resources in the
class.
In the model development, there were some steps conducted to design a
valid product of supplementary reading materials for seventh grade students. The
first step was analyzing the core and basic competence in the Curriculum 2013.
Then, the prototype was designed based on the results of the exploration stage. In
the second stage, the prototype was validated by the expert in TEFL and the
expert in layout to obtain the validity about the reading materials based on
curriculum 2013. After obtaining the feedback from the experts, then the
researcher revised the prototype. In the third step, the prototype was implemented
twice. Therefore, the prototype reached its feasibility.
It is hoped that the supplementary reading materials can help the teacher
in teaching using scientific approach especially for teaching reading. It is also
hoped that the supplementary reading materials motivates the students’ in learning
and creates the conducive situation in the classroom.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) menginvestigasi kualitas buku “When
English Rings A Bell” untuk mengajar ketrampilan membaca siswa kelas VII
SMP, dan (2) mendeskripsikan pengembangan materi tambahan ketrampilan
membaca untuk kelas VII SMP Negeri di Surakarta. Jenis penelitian ini adalah
penelitian Riset dan Pengembangan. Ada dua tahapan yang digunakan dalam
penelitian ini. Tahap pertama adalah eksplorasi yang terdiri dari studi pustaka,
tinjauan lapangan, and analisis kebutuhan. Sedangkan tahap kedua adalah
pengembangan produk yang terdiri dari perancangan prototype, validasi ahli dan
uji coba produk.
Sebelum mengembangkan materi, buku “When English Rings A Bell”
(WERB) di evaluasi dengan menggunakan daftar kriteria aspek evaluasi buku
yang di usulkan oleh Cunningsworth. Hasil evaluasi buku WERB untuk kelas
tujuh didukung oleh hasil dari analisa kebutuhan. Hasil dari analisa kebutuhan
menunjukan bahwa WERB mempunyak kekurangan, khususnya untuk mengajar
ketrampilan membaca: 1) materi reading dalam WERB sangat terbatas, termasuk
ketersediaan text bacaan dan luasnya cakupan kosa kata. 2) kegiatan kegiatanya
tidak merefleksikan prosedur dalam pendekatan ilmiah seperti yang disarankan
oleh pemerintah, 3) materi yang tersedia tidak mendukung pengembangan
indicator kemampuan dalam reading. Dari kelemahan-kelemahan yang sudah
disebutkan, guru harus menambah banyak materi ketrampilan membaca dari
berbagai sumber di dalam kelas.
Di dalam pengembangan model, ada beberapa langkah untuk merancang
produk yang valid untuk murid kelas tujuh. Langkah pertama adalah menganalisis
kompetensi inti dan kompetensi dasar dalam kurikulum 2013. Kemudian prototipe
dikembangkan berdasarkan hasil dari tahap explorasi. Langkah kedua, prototipe di
validasi oleh ahli dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dan ahli tampilan buku,
Tahap ini dilakukan untuk mendapatkan validitas dari materi ketrampilan
membaca berdasarkan kurikulum 2013. Setelah mendapatkan masukan dari kedua
ahli tersebut, peneliti merevisi prototipe. Pada langkah ke tiga, prototipe telah di
uji cobakan dua kali sehingga menjadi valid.
Diharapkan materi tambahan ketrampilan membaca ini dapat membantu
guru mengajar berdasarkan pendekatan ilmiah. Ini juga diharapkan mampu
memberikan motivasi kepada siswa dalam belajar dan situasi kelas dapat
meningkat berkat penggunaan materi tambahan ini.
